Totally agree. I also think the plot of VIII really made VII look kinda childish and stupid.
It had a really mature and deep plot for the time (as far as FF games go) IMO. When I was 12 years old that shit was beautiful. FFVI will always be my favourite though.

It is batshit insane in my books that so many people worship VII, even today. The Sephiroth worship on the Internet in the late 90s/early 2000s was absolutely disgusting, and soon it will be back, reinforced by the extra-strength cringe factor we've developed now in the 2010s.

I remember playing this turd in military boarding school, its kindergarten-caliber dialog and ludicrous characters... well, mostly I remember that it was awful. The main thing it had going for it was 3D, which bedazzled almost everyone back then into believing shit was tasty.

VI was without a doubt the best in the series.

It was the 3D and the music I'd say. The story isn't great but it was an entertaining game to play.

Yea sorry.. that was pretty epic for a video game at that time and at 12 - 14 years old, I thought it was a pretty great story. The only downside was Squall suffering from emo-itis.

No need to be sorry, I liked it back then as well. Still have the CDs for the PC version ;) The FF7 box was cooler though.

VIII's story never really resonated with me, I can't remember it too clearly but all the orphan shit later on was just retarded. Rinoa and Squall's romance arc didn't make sense either - it's all "...whatever" up until a certain point then suddenly he immediately realizes he's in love with her without any buildup, and she loves him despite the fact he's said about 5 words total to her, and 4 were "whatever". Eyes On Me is a wonderful song though.

Of the PS1 FF games, FFIX is the king in terms of coherent story that doesn't feel like it was ripped from a bad 80s anime OVA and characters that don't make you want to throttle them every time they open their mouths to shrill some badly translated bullshit. Just a shame about the art style which makes you feel like you're playing something made for 5 year olds, despite the story actually being a couple shades darker than VII or VIII. Oh, and Melodies of Life just barely surpasses Eyes On Me, for me at least.

VIIIs was very apathetic with much of it coming up only in late second act. Even then the whole threat seemed very meh. The only thing that stood out in it was that the world building was slightly better than FFVIIs which was terrible (Shinra is a company and yet there's no other countries in the world besides Yuffi's that got its ass kicked by them), but even then country's have massive gaps in between them of nothing. Both in that respect are a step down from FF3 and it's only with FFIX that they got back to norm.

FFIXs strength wasn't it story so much as its characters, quirky style, humour and odd, other worldly feel to their world. The journey to other continent and the mist was great, as the game went on it became blander as it became a more conventional FF plot.

I actually think FF8 had a really, really good first disk and it was the best when you were actually playing as mercenaries doing military operations that SEED were supposed to be at the time. Then it turns into more typical Final Fantasy mambo-jumbo nonsense later on. And to tie into what you guys said about FF9 - game simply had stellar localization and benefited immensely from that. It pains me greatly that I knew people who dismissed 9 simply because of its art style compared 8.

FFVIII had maybe the worst plot in the series. The first disc was serviceable, but after that it went off the deep end with dream logic, deus ex machinae, contrived coincidences, and a villain who wants to destroy the universe for absolutely no reason whatsoever. The only way it makes any amount of sense is if this theory is true.

Coincidentally, I only ever played Disc 1.

School setting, horrible cast, horrible love story and a system which would be decent if you didn't have to spend so much time stealing magic, I didn't like FF8.
FF7 was decent, with a decent cast (especially some enemies and other NPCs), Midgard is a good location ; the materia system is not perfect but rather original so it works.
I really liked FF9, I liked the cast (especially Freya, but also Vivi for example), some locations were cool (the "pirate" city, the Black mage town), and the system is very good (I really enjoyed learning skills through equipement and choosing skills via skill points). I liked the global atmospehre and settings in FF9 much more than in FF8 (clothes, towns) and I don't think the bad proportions of characters misfit the game that much (for example Zidane, Vivi or Freya look good).
And I agree that FF6 is better than these 3 games.

Basically the rest of my Final Fantasy experience (III, IV, V, VII, X, XII, XIII) was me attempting in vain to discover a game that could match FFVI. You think I could have just well enough alone at a point.

IX is close to it (on par with FF2).

It was more than just the aesthetics in IX that were a call back to older FF games. It dropped the more serious tone of the previous two for more of a light hearted story of derring-do (for some reason that noun seems most apt) that is actually closer to FF2 than 3. 3 is when the series started to take on more of a serious overtone (while it still kept it from being emo like 7 and 8).

I can't tell if you're talking about the SNES games or the actual FF2 and FF3 for the NES. I guess I'm not used to any mention of the term 'FF2' or 'FF3'. Since, I was pretty sure most people agreed to just call it by the proper order so everyone doesn't have a brain aneurysm.

Why did you never play IX?

For me personally VI and IX are the best FF's. It changes which I think is superior from time to time.

Combination of I never owned a PlayStation with other RPGs displaced my interest in Final Fantasy, so I've felt little incentive to go to the trouble in my adult years when there are a million as yet untried games at my fingertips (including Chrono Trigger on the Wii VC, which I started years ago and never finished).

I'm sure IX is a great game because all of my college friends who owned PlayStations assured me it was.

Remember, the game was developed for Japanese youth, primarily. Ultra-bashful, super-childish flirtation/romance seems to be the norm in Japanese culture, even into adulthood.

Daily reminder the remake will not be Final Fantasy VII. It'll be Final Fantasy VII: Post Compilation Revised Edition which'll 'update' core features to ensure they meet the expectations of modern fans of the series (RE: people who've never played Final Fantasy VII). Not to mention the original game's story raped just so the director's can insert their shitty fanfic characters from the spinoff games into it in order to get the validation they've been craving for the past decade.

So what (the following rant not aimed at you directly, but fans)? This is the whole fucking problem with FFVII fans, and fans in general who cry "REMAKE MUH FAVORITEZ!!!!". "The original has aged", "i want to relive teh feelz", they say. What the fuck has aged poorly about FFVII? It's a fucking state of the art (at the time) console game, not some obscure Spectrum ZX action game with weird ass controls. Who the fuck cares if the new remake doesn't have ATB, you can always go and play the original game.

I swear, the lack of any willingness to play old games is what is fucking wrong with the whole industry.

Why are gamers so fucking retarded? Look at movies, the best remakes are the ones that throw the original almost out of the window (Carpenter's The Thing). Nobody gives a fuck about shot to shot bullshit like The Psycho.

Still, I can't wait for FFVII fans to commit suicide on release because it doesn't meet their emo standards.

obviously it isn't pretty enough anymore :outrage:

But yeah, I'm surprised at how some people are downright asking for remakes and remasters (especially of PS360 games, what fucking garbage is that?) and w/e the fuck just so that their sensible eyes aren't assaulted by how old games look. That's why they want the same damn game but just "prettier" looking. I'm already expecting Squeenix to add in Genesis since they already threw him into the games with Crisis Core and I'm okay with that, but I'll bet there'll be some butthurt about it.

Well the translation/localization was pretty meh too. Though I doubt most of the people asking for a remake noticed.

I really just want to see all the locales and characters remade in modern graphics - the remake is never going to replace the original or even compete with it. Just being able to move the camera freely while walking around Midgar or The City of The Ancients is going to feel great if the visuals stay true to the original game.

Mainly because of the graphics. And thats because its the only Final Fantasy game that graphically due to its bkockiness has aged terribly. Final Fantasy IV-VI still look perfectly fine. So do VIII and IX and so on.

No, wait you may count FFIII to that if you want since that IIRC never got a proper 2D update only the terrible looking 3D DS one. But, IMO nes still looks fine enough.

*Graphicswhoredex*

Other than that a better official translation would be nice.

I just don't see the point in making the FF7 reimagining a menu based action RPG like Kingdom Hearts and FF15 (I'm guessing that that's what it's going to be). I mean we have Kingdom Hearts 3 and FF15 for that.
