I think fans are going to freak out when they release the remake and it's not like the original.

But we can't have these upgraded, beautiful 3D models of Cloud and Barrett, still lining up in a row, jumping forward to attack anenemy, then jumping back to wait for their next turn. That would be bizarre.

The most saddening and bizzare statement so far. I was initially in favour of the remake, but now it sounds like they want to take a serious dump on turn based combat.

Daily reminder the remake will not be Final Fantasy VII. It'll be Final Fantasy VII: Post Compilation Revised Edition which'll 'update' core features to ensure they meet the expectations of modern fans of the series (RE: people who've never played Final Fantasy VII). Not to mention the original game's story raped just so the director's can insert their shitty fanfic characters from the spinoff games into it in order to get the validation they've been craving for the past decade.

In the interview I posted earlier Nomura mentioned that they are not going to add any additional characters to the game and also he said they don't want to take any of the goofy stuff out either. I'm not sure how serious they about that though. So far they've only agreed that they're going to make changes to the combat and other gameplay mechanisms - the story and characters are meant to stay untouched. But we don't have any evidence yet so it all remains to be seen.

they could make this a better game just by removing the ability to pair Cure with All - what fights in FF7 are actually tense? Godo, the Battle Arena and Ruby Weapon? and there ain't precisely much all-healing going on in those battles...

All this needs is the trailer graphics and high quality remastered audio staying true to original.

But i know this will not happen.

If they keep Materia system intact, every character will have the heal spells available. Maybe they should just make some characters better at using certain kinds of Materia - Aerith could heal better, Yuffie could steal/morph better etc. This would also solve the problem with character differentiation in combat - in the original every character was practically the same in combat, except for Limit Breaks. Also they really should make some skills independent from Materia - it makes no sense that Stealing requires you to equip Materia, maybe it would just increase the chance of success instead. I'm not against changing the combat at all as long as they have something relatively similar to ATB/turn-based and stay the fuck away from FFXIII's battle system.

Also, bring back Enemy Skills! :mob:

If you say so.

As a student of adaption, I would rather be mad about adjustments in the retelling than be bored by an embalmed story.

Could you imagine what would have happened if instead of Shenmue 3 they would have put FF7 Remake to Kickstarter? A few records might have been broken.
Leaked list of stretch goals from the next Imdiegogo campaign:
20.000.000$ You can save Aeris.
30.000.000$ You can romance Barrett.
50.000.000$ Cloud and Sephirot romance,

$100,000 backer tier: Become an NPC in the FF7 world.
$500,000 backer tier: Become a recruitable member.

Someone would find a way to get a few loans and make it happen.

Final Fantasy 7 wasn't turn based anyways.

It had both ATB and the Wait option. Wait option = turn based.
No it wasn't, it just paused the game while you were in menus. Otherwise known as real-time with pause.

Nooo, you couldn't pause it yourself, which I believe to be the definition of RTwP.

The game didn't completely pause even with Wait option enabled - if you waited long enough the enemies would take action despite it being your turn. So it's not really turn-based in the strict definition of the word.

Or any definition of the word

Well, it's commonly called turn-based - precisely to differentiate it from different forms of real-time combat. It's certainly not RTwP.
I call a game turn based because time or order of actions is divided into turns. Neither of which is the case in FF7.

Well, attacks don't exactly happen simultaneously either.
The game is just paused for those I believe (the timer bars don't fill up). Planescape Torment also paused during magic attacks, no one is calling it turn based.
