the easiest one to find the base mod (basically just the base game data made available) is by opening the official modding guide (which is in Chinese). They provide the link there

you can just pop out those browser translation plugin (or just let Chrome translate if you use Chrome) to comb through

If i have free time i could try finding it

The mod that I said is in SCH (Simplified Chinese) or TCH (Traditional)

The game data of Heluo games are everything literally in text, including coordinates and stuffs. When they made modding available for HTLS it's pretty much dumping all the text data. When you subbed to the mod by the dev, you go to your Steam Workshop folder, goes to HTLS one, open the mod folder. Everything there is in Chinese. Translating the game to English means translating those files.

This is pretty much how the various translation in Workshop works. The English one was made using DeepL but that was really old and today's DeepL is probably better. ChatGPT in general is also better for Chinese.
Ohh, I see, I thought those acronyms meant something else...

And if you make changers to the .xml files after installing the mod, they would take affect in the next restart or would you need to repack them or some such?

You upload them as a new mod and play them as a "module". You can choose which module to play in the main menu (I forgot which one, 3rd from bottom?). How mod works in HTLS is that it's like playing a new "module" (think Neverwinter Night) with modifiction. Most mods for the game are basically the base game with minor modifications or in case of translation, a new language. You can't resume your save I think.

There are some total conversion I think but those are very rare. Most big mods also just adds to the base game.

I'm having a bit of trouble trying to get the new text to appear.
So I downloaded the mod, found out that it downloaded into
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\952860\2123758363

There's like a config.zip, I unzipped it, and the various bits is there fine.
As a test I found the "new game" and other main menu settings, translated them, then zipped it up to a config.zip again and put it in the same place, but those parts in the menu aren't translated, they're still in their original form?
Do I need to zip it up in a special way or handle that whole thing in a different way? I selected/reselected multipel times in the mod loader.
The mod loader description works fine in the "Mod.config" file when translated, but the actual contents do not, it seems.

Ah ok, nvm, I got it to work.
The formatting was wrong.

Ok, after spending a week at this, was able to translate everything.
But... it seems to break the game?
So It kinda works, the menus display correctly etc... but the dialogues aren't popping up anymore, and I can't figure out what the issue is, like, here's one part from the translated:
b2005901000 0 b2005901001 0 n20146b 0 Hmph, my worthy niece, today we shall see whose skill is superior - your Wheat family's Heavenly Blade technique or my Ye family's Rainbow Sword technique! 0 0 0
b2005901001 0 b2005901002 0 n20049i 0 ...Hey. 0 0 0
b2005901002 0 b2005901003 0 0 0 Hm? Are you calling me? 0 0 0
b2005901003 0 b2005901004 0 n20049i 0 Looking at their stance, I fear they're setting up their Ye family's unique ultimate technique, the Flying Rainbow Sword Formation. 0 0 0
b2005901004 0 b2005901005 0 0 0 Flying Rainbow Sword Formation? What's that? Is it formidable? 0 0 0
b2005901005 0 b2005901006 0 n20049i 0 I haven't seen it, but I've always heard it's Ye Jinhong's trump card, a unique and extremely difficult technique to counter. 0 0 0
b2005901006 0 b2005901007 0 n20049i 0 Do you have any good ideas? 0 0 0
And another from the original:
I've no clue what the difference is supposed to be here other than the translated.
If the dialogue gets too long it breaks it and doesn't show it anymore?

I originally thought maybe the spaces were the issue, so I replaced all the " " with "-", but that didn't do anything.

Probably not that, I assume you break some "table" somewhere hence text not appearing

Try reverting file back to Chinese and try translating just one line in the opening of the game where the MC falls in the cave

Yeah, that seems to work.
My guess is some tags maybe weren't closed or done badly by the AI when it was translating, like the <colour> tags.

how do you replace the Chinese's with English after translating?
I wrote a script that outputs the line number and column of the chinese characters it detects on each column for each line.
Then I fed that to the AI to translate, then I wrote another script to reverse that, take in the line number, and replace the column with the specified one from the translation.

This would have avoided changing the other parts of the structure of each line, just the asian characters ones (I ommited the ones with LOGIC and MULTIACTION etc...). So I think the problem is specifically in the translated text itself like with the <color> tags, that's the only one that makes sense.
I can write maybe another script to check the structure of tags in general for each line or something.

No, that didn't work. The script found some tags that weren't closed, but it also found them in the original...
Fixing that (removing them) didn't fix it.

Yeah, I am on the translation discord, there was a vote for which game was next, and HTLS won overwhelmingly despite already having a translation. This game has a following and its definitely a favorite.

Crossposting:

The (probably first) definitive HTLS Retranslation has officially been released. Lash announced it two minutes ago on the Discord channel.

Unbelievably hyped for HTLS2. Unless he for some reason stops, I'm sure Lash will spearhead a translation for it. Would be awesome if Heluo would, you know, release their games in English. But we all know that's incredibly unlikely.

By the way, totally forgot we have a dedicated thread for HTLS. Going to cross-post this from the Non-Japanese game thread just in case anyone missed it:

Been playing the updated translation of Ho Tu Lo Shu, and man, it's a huge improvement. It's still rough, with awkward diction, phrasing, and syntax, but the overall information and intention comes across way better to the player. Definitely makes a replay worth it, and if you've never tried the game before, now is the best it's ever been in English. Highly recommend. The workshop patch works fine on it's own, but there's some valuable information that gets cut of in certain places if you aren't using the Resizing patch you can find on the Fanlations Discord (Lash's) server. It's worth the minor hassle of setting it up.

The guys at the RPGHQ are doing another translation for the game, which may end up being great. If anyone feels like giving them a hand, head over there and volunteer

rusty is claiming it's on par with a high quality professional translation? Ok? In that short amount of time with AI? I'd love to see a screenshot of this. I honestly find it hard to believe.

I absolutely have to play this at some point. IIRC this is the one where the player character makes a lot of morally questionable choices. Always a good time.
