My main problems with New Vegas are:

  • the terrain - the decision to compress the landscape both horizontally and vertically has led to something that looks flat and feels awkward
  • wild west theme - first two Fallouts managed to create a unique blend of both desolate wilderness and urban/suburban 50's american culture. Bethesda focused exclusively on the later, and Obsidian on the former.
  • atmosphere - that fucking sky. 2D map. Ugly clouds. Bright sunny days. Ugh.
  • limited companions - having the ability to lead several characters at once (determined by your Charisma) and seeing how they interact with each other is one of the best things you experience in story/character driven RPGs
There are other things that undermine the whole experience, but a lot of those problems were already present in Black Isle titles as well, so I'm not overly butthurt about them.

New Vegas jumps from wild west to militarized to horror to a very weird and wonderful downtrodden '60s Vegas theme and more. New Vegas' awesome thematic variety (and variety of content in general) is one of its highlights, so the ridiculous amount of people who believe it's just a wild west desert leads me to believe those people didn't actually play it beyond the first 1/4 of the game.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
As I commented recently in the relevant Obsidian subforum thread, Fallout:NV feels like reading an excellent book in a crappy 10-inch tablet.
You want to read the whole thing, it's very interesting but the way you do it hurts your damn brain..

New Vegas is hands down my favorite game in the Elder Scrolls series, though it doesn't mean much, since I never was much of a fan.

The only objectively true answer to the question in op is an obvious "no".

If Fallout 3 was a malignant tumour on the Fallout franchise's head, then New Vegas was a benign one. No wait, it was like one of those weird dead twin type things growing out of your shoulder or some shit. It might not look pretty and you wouldn't necessarily put it on the family photo but it's still kin goddamnit.

There is, multiple headshots don't do shit.
Hmm, I did played New Vegas in 2015 though, so I kind of had the 'luxury' of playing it with all the official patches in there. Must have been tweaked here and there, since I've always successfully performed one-two headshots which is enough in vanilla.

Still, you have to admit, no obnoxiously HP-bloated enemies like Albino Radscorpions and Feral Ghoul Reavers.

The plot is so so, an army based on the old roman model even in its weapons and armour (and the chief calling Caesar...) is really a retarded idea and does not fit at all Fallout universe. I guess it is the historical love of Sawyer which is to blame, game would have been much better without this Rome thing (or at least reduced to no retardo level )
The quest are logical, however being able to solve them by a zillion different dialogues checks is not multiple solutions but bad design and become boring IMO.
The maps were not very interesting ( Fallouit 3 only edge over FNV, on the other hand it's true F3 maps where not "Fallouty" at all) .
The view (FP) and combats (RT) are totally different (for the worst).
My biggest complaints though are the dialogues which are very flat and lack any kind of flavour (in total contradiction of the original fallouts).

FNV iis a good game but not a worthy Fallout game in both gameplay, "atmosphere" and general style.

You dont even know what you dont know.

Wat? You have talky talky and other ways to solve quests, and even talky talky can lead to different outcomes.

The maps were not very interesting
Double wat? Almost every location in the game shows a care for detail and love for the setting that surpasses the second game easily.

My biggest complaints though are the dialogues which are very flat and lack any kind of flavour (in total contradiction of the original fallouts).
Triple wat? Plenty of flavorful characters all over the game. In fact plenty of interesting factions with their own interesting motivations. I remember almost every npc in the game, and thats no small feat.

FNV iis a good game but not a worthy Fallout game in both gameplay, "atmosphere" and general style.
Cuadruple wat? Fallout 2 took a shovel to atmospheres face and beat it to death. NV atmosphere was great, easily on par with the first game. Tight locations that are at least somewhat connected with others (and often deeply connected, with npcs that know eachother living in different places and quests that take you all over the mohave), make you feel like its a whole world.

I agree. I want more ghosts, Scientologists, kung-fu towns and casino-whore-junkie theme parks. That's what real Fallout is about.

I agree. I want more Tom Cruise, Elton John jokes, endless toilet humor and pop culture references. Awesome flavor and great writing.

I think New Vegas would be better if it wasn't a gamebryo game.
I think everyone will agree.

Whenever I think I have the urge to replay NV I'm reminded that I also should get the UI mod, the no bullet sponge enemies mod, the better weather mod and this and that mod. At which point I no longer care and drop it before I picked it up.
Do like me - install and configure the mods, play through the tutorial in order to test them, and leave the game installed for the next time you get the itch. I'm about to start my second full playthrough these days. I've only played it once, it was long ago, and I played without mods. The fact that I finished it though, is significant.

This is what has been preventing me from replaying NV so far. I don't even remember some of the mods I've used the last time and I just couldn't play the game without at least UI and combat mods. If anything I hope someone will remake NV in a non-retarded engine eventually.

Do as AwesomeButton says, he speaks the truth:

I've repeteadly made the mistake of "install -> install hundreds of mods -> play ten minutes -> get bored and uninstall". If you are bored, don't uninstall the game. Eventually you will want to play and you will skip the tediousness of installing everything all over again, which generally translates into "I installed 100 mods in 5 hours... for this?".

I don't think New Vegas matches originals. Part of that is caused by Gamebryo, then there is a fact a lot of stuff was cut for release but from what is available to us I have to say that it is not enough for New Vegas to be considered as good as Fo1 or Fo2. I expected to see political struggle in The Strip like in New Reno but on much bigger scale. I expected to have much more interactive NCR-Legion war with lots of events that would be triggered at dfferent points in the game. I expected Great Khans to be something more than few tents with roaming NPCs, a gang that would distribute guns and drugs back and forth. I expected Boomers to be bigger than 20 NPCs with two Howitzers. I expected better endgame boss. In Fallout 1 I had to defeat Master and Lieutenant, Master is a horrific creature integrated into vault defense system throne and Lieutenant an augumented Supermutant, a cyborg with high intelligence and Gatling Laser. In Fallout 2 Frank Horrigan is a unique Supermutant also augumented with cybernetic implants and sealed in special suit of Power Armor developed exclusievly for him, he also has an automatic Plasma Minigun. In New Vegas I had to fight some pathetic dude with Bumper Sword, The Masticator from New Reno Boxing League was more menacing than Lanius.

It's a bad game, good RPG, mediocre Fallout in my book. Deal with that how you want.

EDIT: God, I have read what I have written and it seems I want radiant quests in New Vegas, what the hell happened to me after playing that puke Bethesda made recently? :negative:

I like the Mojave. Yeah it's flat, but it looks pretty flat irl to me:

Mojave_Desert.jpg

The story's good, the characters are good, it has lots of options and content, etc. Combat has always been a weak spot in the series, I still think Tactics was the only one which had reasonable combat mechanics, and teambuilding is relevant. 1 and 2's combat options were pretty slim, and while stuff like skills and stats mattered more than in NV, Tactics took vertical movement and positioning into the equation. And vehicles!

In the end, the only real FO games for me are 1, 2, Tactics and New Vegas. My favorites are 1 and NV.

Don't worry anon, no one's here to judge you. It's just a survey to see which forum (if any) is full of diehard "isometric is king and everything else is shite" fans.

So far, RPG Codex is taking the cake, as 96,3% of people agree that it is a worthy Fallout title, with 3,7% (1 vote) claiming it's better than Bethesda's attempts but still doesn't live up to the originals.

I'm actually surprised 8 users in this poll believe New Vegas is even worse than Bethesda's Fallouts.

Only the codex breeds that special kind of retard that will whiteknight talking deathclaws.

Lucky for us, it's been seen elsewhere too, so the Codex isn't alone in that special place. Further yet, I've seen people lamenting that the S'Lanter was left in the cutting room floor.

That vote was actually mine. New Vegas has better story and doesn't treat you like idiot who needs to kill stuff every 2 minutes and collect McGuffins all over the map.

It's marred by dumb shit like all the filler areas they left to bad third stringer freelancer designers. It carries a lot of complete shit DNA from FO3 like theme vaults (I think these are ultimately Avellone's fault, but Beth actually pulled the trigger). I think C's Legion was mishandled badly too, in ways that made it crappy both as a faction to interact with and as a comic book army of evil to fight.

But it's mostly better than FO2.
