I think I've illustrated my point sufficiently that I may feel smug without directly responding to above comment.

What the fuck? this discussion is STILL going?

Sorry, I stopped reading on page 4 when bert posted that image of all character designs being identical. Anyone who, after this, kept claiming that "japanese characters look the same and western ones don't" needs to get his eyes checked.

I did find it pretty funny that the only character to stand out in this image was Mario :smug:

Have you played ANY game listed by her? I'm curious...
No i haven't, but that's besides the point. If you say that those games are as great as the best the west has to offer then i will have to take your word for it, and investigate myself.
Thank You, Your Honor. I have no further questions...

In before:
"LOL, I don't like/play such games, your point was invalid. All Eastern games are inferior to 5-10 top Western games".

or:

"Wait, wait. By "good games" I meant "complex games". Mario is simple platformer so Alpha Cantauri is much better game".

Good. And I have no trouble recognizing that ICO or Zelda - Ocarina of Time is within the same spectrum of greatness as Alpha Centauri, despite the fact their respective genres shares little in common with each other. Sadly (?), most Codexers, you included, have.

roll-a-die's post about graphics to which I was responding used the cream of the crap (minus troll) as examples of Western art styles. I was merely responding in kind, and I'm sure you'll agree that the prepubescent shit found in many Jap games is a crime against humanity, proof that there are no technologically advanced extraterrestrials, indicates that two nukes wasn't enough, etc.

My point was that just as in the west, most japanese games are crap. Also, just like in the west, most television series are crap, and most comics are crap. And in all those three cases, and many other ones, the so called industry does nothing but steal each other's ideas, styles, etc.

My point was that there are things that are diferent among Japanese games in the same way there are things that are diferent from the common, boring, retarded usual things among western games . The problem is that, first, they are obscure in the west and, second, most do not ever get translated into civilized languages.

If you want to see something that's really a crime against humanity instead of checking common, hyper comertialist crap like Final Fantasy check Deus Machina Demonbane and then lose all hope in humanity. And get a couple of nukes for me to deliver via plane crash in Tokyo's heart. I'll inmolate myself for the future of mankind.

SO basically the gist of this thread is this:

One side says Japanese games are shit

The other side counters this by saying Western games are shit

Then everyone explains that their real point is that both have shit games and both have good games.

Not all Japanese games are necessarily pure shit. But, I'd say that the "best" of them can hardly compete with the best of Western games (in any category).

Of course, weeaboo untermenschen cannot (and will not) understand that.

The World Ends With You, for all its faults, at least made the over accessorized designs make sense, as it takes place in a fashion crazy city, with some of the major characters, who are the ones with the stranger tastes in clothes, implied to be behind some of the bigger labels (I am told the actual place the setting is based on is just as fashion crazy as the game makes it out to be, if not more).

You mean Shibuya? The concept in The World Ends With You is correct, Shibuya being both the center of fashion, nightlife, and IN behaviour and 'tude for Tokyo's youth. And, to be honest, the characters don't wear nothing too weird.

No, not the main characters. People like Sho with his blinging hat and Uzuki (the offical art has her arts crossed, but she's wearing a corset over her shirt)

Well well, finally a straight forward comparison. So, is Ocarina of Time within the same spectrum of greatness as Alpha Centauri? Codex, i demand nothing short then an detailed comparison.

You will have to wait for it till next Thursday, I'm afraid. :(
Comparing two games from totally different genres using "greatness" as factor needs some Suite Lyricism...

the pinnacle of platforming.

Better, more difficult combat does not exist. And if you admit defeat and lower the difficulty the game practically calls you a faggot and gives you a pink flower.

the game is a masterpiece in every concievable way and in the running for one of the best games ever. Down to the weaponry/upgrades/inventory and money management. Wide array of enemy types, spectacular bosses and meticulate pacing, there's never a dull moment in that game. Fucking outstanding. It's literally the only game in existance that makes the "escort mission" enjoyable.

Practically every third person game since has tried to live up to it and failed miserably.

It also looks fantastic as well, considering it's running on a gamecube with 16bit colour depth ffs.

Do those "modern" bullet hell shooters use some kind of analog controller for the main input? I don't even see how some of that 1-2 pixel dodging would be possible with 4-way microswitch stick like Cave arcade games were made for.

Edit - Like specifically if you're in some kind of say 5 square pixel void with a ship with a 2 square pixel hitbox, and the 5 square pixel void is moving very slowly to the SSW or something, a digital controller is going to be absolute murder, you have to feather two different microswitches at two different rates so that you can get a geartooth velocity that averages out to the correct amount. While an analog controller or mouse would be much easier. Or better would be like an analog/digital stick that you could flip between modes with a button or something.

I meant categories such as graphics / art direction / gameplay / story etc, not genres.

Holy shit, imagine how much talent and creativity went into advancing the genre like that.

Banshee is a normal shoot 'em up game, with an emphasis on shooting things. Hellsinker and Mushihime-sama Futari are Bullet Hell games, with an emphasis on defensive dodging, navigating through massive patterns of death, and bullet cancelation. Those are two diferent genres, and hardcore followers of one usually don't like the other one because the gameplay is completely diferent outside superficial similarities.

Compare:

Banshee's second stage.

Mushihime-Sama Futari's second stage.

Hellsinker's second stage.

If you still believe they are the same genre then you are hopeless. They play nothing alike, and the skills they require to master are completely diferent. Hellsinker, in particular, the one you are saying was not an important milestone in the genre, is infamous because if you try to play it even like normal bullet hell games, let alone normal shoot 'em up games, you will never get beyond stage 2, since the gameplay is dependant on a ridiculous amount of unique rules and mechanics.

Naturally, a game that revolutioned a genre is not a milestone inside that genre. Sure thing.

The rest some other day, i'm back to my homework now.

Now you are trolling again. Why should I waste my time on such thing when you simply KNOW better which game (or genre) is better without playing the damn games?

You probably missed this :)wink:), but I simply quoted your enlightened post, changing examples.

I don't think that comparing "greatness" of two games from totally different genres is possible, but if you prove that:

I may reconsider creating tl;dr wall of text just to please some troll (high probability on 'Dex).

You should start by defining "greatness" of a game.
And if by "great game" you mean "the game that I liked a lot" or "the game that stands out from others in the genre", you can also stop at this point.

Street Fighter had better art direction and story than MK, IMNSHO.

Although this is an obvious troll attempt, I'll clarify once again. A Japanese game that could be considered the best in any aspect is likely worse than a Western game praised for the same thing. In example, whatever weeaboo-faggetery is said to have the best storyline of all Japgames cannot compare to Torment.

in before 'but pst is a jrpg too durrhurr'
