Better late then never and hopefully they use the time to polish everything up, despite that the alpha looked already real good.

Rather than polish they could use some hardcore optimization. Idk how the fuck do they plan to put this on a console.

Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is.
Jesus Christ is that what Risen looked like on consoles?

Now I understand why I was being called a retard when I said Risen was a great looking game when it came out.

All three Risen games are surprisingly good looking considering the tiny (25 people) team making them...on PC.
On consoles they look like shit.

Alright, so I gave it a go. It's an interesting game with a nice atmosphere.

Problems:

There are two huge problems, and a bunch of smaller ones.

The biggest are:
1. COMBAT
- Half the time you don't know what to do to score a hit, and another half you have no idea what's going on.
- There is no good feedback during combat. Half the time you don't know whether you blocked an attack or not.
- After you get parried, you don't know if you can do anything to block the next attack or not. You spam keys and hope for the better.
- I fought the training fight for 20 minutes.
- Still don't know why most of my parries don't work.
- Should my sword face the same direction as their attack or is my timing just bad?
- You have no idea why after crossing swords, sometimes it's you who punches your enemy in the face and sometimes it's the other way around.
- Why can the enemy attack immediately after getting hit, and why can't I? Etc. So many questions...
- Combos (that are basically essential to winning a fight) are impossible to execute well on keyboard + mouse, you feel like a handicapped person.
- Etc etc etc. Very confusing. Kinda fun, but it's spoiled by all these things. As somebody pointed out, it should've been made simpler, like Chivalry.
TL;DR combat system is broken and needs a complete rework. Which I know it most likely won't get this far in development. It's fucked.

2. TEXTURES STREAMING
- You approach a person and you see him like a sprite from Doom2. Then he starts flickering as proper textures are being uploaded into memory. Then after 5-10 seconds, he looks ok. The streaming technology is obviously fucked here. This is something that usually gets sorted at the prototyping stage, isn't it? I mean I sure hope they fix it, but I don't have much hope. This is a big problem, it's present everywhere, the ground does that, houses, castles, people, horses, etc. It must be fixed.

Other than that, here's a few things I found annoying:
- Somebody said "Every Tom, Dick and Harry" in the year 1403. Historical accuracy out the window. Poor English translation? Hire professionals pls.
- Quest tracking compass. FUCK.
- Skyrim-like inventory. Good for consoles maybe, but not for PC. What the fuck?
- Can't call the horse, so after you venture away from it for your RPG business of talking to people and stealing carrots from the houses, you don't want to go back and then you lose it entirely.
- Finally, you encounter a whore and she flirts with you, offering you her services, and the only two possible answers are "maybe later" and a strict "no". Both of which are a "no", obviously. Such RPG. Such mature themes. Sigh...

Think "Every Tom, Dick and Harry" were used by Shakespeare in one o his historical plays, which were what century an an half later? Don't know if it were in common use in Europe or just English phrase though.

Does it matter? The game is historically accurate as far as games go. Don't expect anything more because you are not going to get it. Frankly, it is already a miracle we are getting a game that doesn't have dragons in it.

What counts is stuff like gameplay, combat, questing, and so forth.

Such mature themes. Sigh...

What you think as mature themes are not really mature. More like try hard juvenile shit. To wit: The Witcher. Or Game of Thrones.

Like, such realistic, much mature, wow.

So...it would be more mature to deliberately not implement whores in the game even though they were clearly an everyday reality in that, or every, period?

A quick google shows it was first used 250 years later. Not to mention it probably became popular even much later after that.

Sorry matey, i'm an old cunt an forget that theres all this look up shit on net stuff nowdays. Sure I remember readin phrase in Henry V, then again that were what thirty years ago, so can't be sure.

Not sure you can really pinpoint when an where a phrase arose, but i'm not gonna defend game, they should look up someat definitely Bohemian o period I suppose.

Tom Dick Harry isn't the worst ahistorical phrasing, and the whore shit, whatever nobody cares.

Combat seems the bigger deal, are others experiencing the same? It'd be a pity for the moves towards more realistic kinds of sword combat in RPGs to be stillborn.

Your post sounds very biased. Now, I have high expectations for this game, so I am biased myself, and for all I know, this game could bomb completely, but considering what we know, I don't think your criticism is very fair at all.

You criticize the combat system but all your criticisms have to do with the fact that you don't seem to know how it works. We know from previous trailers and interviews that they are implementing a very complex fencing system based on historical european sword fighting, with the help of fencing experts. This is obviously an order of magnitude more complex than the typical melee combat found in games like Skyrim, Chivalry, Mount & Blade, etc. So it's not surprising at all that someone who doesn't know how it works exactly would get trounced. What could be a valid criticism is that perhaps they do not have a good combat tutorial system, which for this kind of combat would be a necessity. Then again, the beta has just begun, so perhaps it will be added later. If I were you, I d mention this to the developers on their forum, because with these kinds of complex combat systems, you definitely want to gently ease the player into it with a robust training system.

Now reread your post with a thought in mind that it was written about Clang. It's pretty funny, and very appropriate, like about fencing experts, etc.

Your post sounds very biased.
The extent of my familiarity and emotional involvement with this project is that I've read a couple of Vavra's tweets and liked them. That was a year ago.

Just assume that you are an educated lad, that knows that whores give you STD's, whereas quest giving women don't.

He likes it so far. Be neat to see what Matt Easton thinks. I think Lindybeige would be studying the thatching to see if it's thick enough and other similar things.

Hate the compass and quest marker. 1st day mod to get that removed.

Got bored and left

Would you like characters to speak Middle English?

The problems with combat do sound rather troubling, however. I guess this was to be expected with such a complex system. So you think there's no chance things get better with patches and such, the system is beyond salvaging? That sucks.

IIRC you can whistle for your horse, or at least one let's player I watched said he could.
