Funny, those jap-rape Wizardries are more authentic RPGs than 95% of the crap released here.

You should leave this kind of trolling to Andharia. He knows how to pull it off.

Also, Gariott lies in this video. He says Ultima is the longest running rpg series in video game format.

That's a Lie.

That award belongs to Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest
But FF and DQ are indeed the longest running rpg series. Unless you discount them as a rpg, but then, whats an rpg?

Oh, come on. The Final in "Final Fantasy" is, as far as I know, a homage to Ultima, from where Square drew inspiration. And the first Ultima game predates Dragon Quest by 5 years.

I misinterpreted FF and DQ as the "series with most titles"

And the last released Dragon Quest post dates the last released single player Ultima by 10 years. During this time multiple DQ's were released, but no Ultima. DQs are also turnbased with tough combat.

He's not trolling , The japanese wizardry are 100% faithfull to the early wizardries system(1-5), turn based combat, grinding and huge dungeons with traps and riddles, sometimes you even have to hand draw your maps . Its probably a bit too oldschool for most players here, (yes i am serious) . The only real difference is the art style wich i find quite tolerable in most iterations , and sometime gorgeous.

Id kill to have that translated, sadly we only get the mainstream stuff those games are considered too sophisticated for the western audience and they are probably right.
Thats the perfect game for long boring hours in the train :

Well, maybe it is a taste thing, but while I don't dislike the early Wizardries, I think games that came later have them beaten in every area. Wizardry 6, for example, has all of these things, but also has a much better exploration element and a much more fun class system. An exception to this, though, would be Wizardry 4. Are there Japanese games that really emulate it faithfully? Now that would be something worth stomaching anime graphics for.

Something like 6 or better 7 crusaders of dark savant, alas no, i fear that to get that kind of experience again theres only grimoire . As far as i know there's none , but i suspect theres some hidden gems unpublished here, and unknown to non japanese gamers.

Unfortunately the Japanese took the Wizardly license and stuck strictly to the Wiz 1-5 format rather than 6-8 for some strange reason, class system included. We got very few of the games translated to English, too. The sad fact to swallow is that the Japanese have been doing blobber CRPGs long after the west gave up on them.

Etrian Odyssey has a very interesting class system and is closer to Wiz 6-7 (8 is unique really, no other game like it apart from the unfinished Wizards and Warriors). The art direction is hard to stomach though.

Because in the rising sun country, a developper suspected of decline , moving away the from the old path and traditions has to commit seppuku to preserve his honor . So that explain why rpgs did not evolve much there.

It is better to have inclined and declined than to never have inclined.

That said, I get the impression JRPGs are trying to become single player MMORPGs lately.

If that were true, you wouldn't be able to visit any major Jap dev HQ without tripping over scores of dead employees.

The guy could be wildly, heartbreakingly mistaken as to either the details of the game or this community's collective preferences, but I don't think a developer would try and astroturf on a forum by hinting about how excited everybody's going to be on a different forum.

So then, has anyone tried to magnify the large X and glean some wisdom or ominous portent?

The immediate images that jump out from the amalgamation-symbol are the circular portraits from the 3DO games. Also, the falling weapons off to the sides remind me of the sketches from the early Might & Magic manuals. Seems like they are going to throw everything from previous MM lore into one big crazy adventure.

I say bring it on!

Whether this turns out to be evil or divine, we will know soon enough.

They are all in-game equipment sprites from MMs 6-8

Yes, but the early printed manuals from the series had lots of random weapon and equipment illustrations. That's what I was remembering. However, it seems more 3DO references in this graphic... so perhaps the story of X is going to focus on Erathia/Enroth.

Some people on the forum will go to the other forum and bring news. Makes it feel more legit than coming to a forum and going "Guys,. guys! Get excited!"

I don't believe that guy on neogaf knows anything. He's either astroturfing or just being a troll.
