So I don't like either of these games, but this thread isn't about my opinion.

-Both these games are very divisive, people either tend to love them or completely hate them
-Both were made by rpg devs who previously made popular games among rpg fans(bg/daggerfall) who would go on to make more financially successful games that would gradually be less and less popular on the codex.
-Both came out within 2 months of each other in 2002
-Both have pretty big modding scenes and came with tool kits to do your own shit
-Both have fans who are fairly rabid, who seem to take anyone disliking either of these two games as a personal insult.
-Both were hated on the codex for a long time, both have seen somewhat of a rehabilitation.

Which do you like more? Or which do you hate more? Or do you hate both equally, or do you hate one slightly less then the other? Or do you like both?

I played NWN first. It has the benefit of it being the first 3d rpg I've ever played and that it felt like a jump ahead in several terms. I was aware of the shortcomings of the OC but it felt like they were taking a step ahead and the long lasting support from both devs and community proves it.

Morrowind is good, but it's too broken in several parts. Not talking about the combat of course, I don't mind dice rolls. But it feels like they had several ideas they couldn't implement.

Morrowind is a superior product out of the box, but Neverwinter modules offered much more than Morrowind mods at the time when both games were new. In Morrowind you were able to somewhat enhance graphics, add some items, some quests, some locations etc. Neverwinter nights had persistent online role-playing worlds where people actually had to role-play, which was a novelty at that time. There were modules that adapted classic adventures, modules that played like an adventure games, modules that tried to be somewhat faithful representation of middle ages, modules that played like a pseudo-JRPG etc.

I think most people can appreciate aspects of Morrowind, even if they are not into it.

Most people would have a problem pointing to one thing NWN did right.

The only thing NWN did right was to add a module construction kit.

Too bad the base game is so bad, even its most excellent modules are a chore to play.

Neverwinter Nights is a mediocre game, though I agree the ease that it enabled the average gamer to design modules for it kicks it up a couple of notches. NWNs biggest crime is that it came after the original SSI D&D games (using the Gold Box engine), the later SSI games (the two Dark Sun games), and the Planescape/Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale games (Infinity Engine). It's hard to follow-up on such a lineage, and you certainly can't afford to toss mediocrity into the fandom. I still enjoy loading up some FRUA modules and Icewind Dale if I want to pass a little quiet time. I have no wish to fire NWN up.

Morrowind came out in 2002 during the last glut of decent CRPGs. In 2002 we have Morrowind, Arx Fatalis, Icewind Dale II, and Gothic II. In 2003 we have The Temple of Elemental Evil. In 2004 we have Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. And 2005 and onwards is almost all junk until the indie RPG era a few years back. Morrowind did a lot of things right for its era. It's an open world with a decent map and quest log, but it doesn't go so far to hold your hand. The environment is interactive, meaning you can go into any home or walk on any solid surface. It has a very good skill based system that awards numerous playstyles. The lore is deep and there are a lot of side diversions to keep you busy. And the graphics are still gorgeous, in my opinion, with the alien landscape and silt riders. In comparison, the NWN games seem too linear and bland in graphical design. I respect that NWN seems more designed for modular design and group play (with a DM and players), but when I play a video game I prefer a game purposely designed around a solo experience.

NWN Shadows of Underwear + Horde of the Untermensch was quite enjoyable, if somewhat bland.

The plethora of user-made modules was also a treasure trove of entertainment. Still remember that one module where you had to determine which of the people at the tavern is actually a demon doppelganger by following subtle clues and paying attention to the patrons' answers. There were, like, ten different scenarios, each with many obvious and subtle differences.

Nwn was the last DnD game I tolerated and it castrated DnD ruleset the most. There is something about it that made it really playable despite it's horrible state, and more I think about it the more it looks like I was easily bought by character/gear customization options and good camera control. No vote, to DnD NWN was what Skyrim is to TES.

Moronwind is a better game that I didn't get to play as much as I would due to other circumstances. Not enough love for it remains to vote for it.

Don't wanna vote at all, really. I will never replay them who cares

I played NWNs OC during a nightmare period of my life. It was the only thing I really had to distract my mind with and it was like eating shit to get rid of hunger pains.

I hated that game so much but all I could do was keep playing to get away from the insanity around me.

NWN gets a lot of hate, but it introduced the world to both David Gaider and Drew Karpyshyn, two hack writers that over the next decade would slowly eat away at any credibility that Bioware might have leeched off Black Isle with Baldurs Gate.

It also gave us Trent Oster as a game designer.

Best thing to happen from NWN is Bioware unknowingly shooting themselves by licensing the engine to CDPR.

Best thing from Morrowind is a future with Todd Howard memes.

Neither. Temple of Elemental Evil is the RPG of that age.

That said, Morrowind is nowhere as bad as the other one. And I hated its guts for ruining my post-Daggerfall expectations.

Morrowind is one campaign. Long, interesting, with lots of shit to find, and good looking for its time.

Neverwinter Nights looks like shit and the OC is crap, but it offers dozens of player made modules that were actually finished and offer great adventures.

So I vote NVN, despite the fact Bethesda's Morrowind campaign is miles above Bioware NVN campaign.

I don't really appreciate any aspects of morrowind except maybe the open world.

To the contrary, the Codex recognized Morrowind as GotY 2002 and in 2010 picked Morrowind as the #4 game of the 2000s.

The game falsely calling itself "Neverwinter Nights" has never been more than another Biowarean abomination.
Well, going back to old threads most people clearly disliked morrowind, it's fine if you like the game(even if I hate it) but you see what I mean when morrowind fans usually need to tell lies about their game.

https://rpgcodex.net/content.php?id=27 - > so this is picks of 2002, it wasn't GOTY. The people asked clearly preferred geneforge, PTD ect. It's also important to understand other rpgs of 2002 included literally like... M&M9, dungeon siege, NWN, so picking a few games morrowind(and divine divinity) literally come into the top by default. As much as I personally hated morrowind, I'd play it before MM9 or dungeon siege.

https://rpgcodex.net/forums/threads/why-does-everyone-hate-morrowind.10050/ -> This one has a poll, where a majority of people say they like morrowind but virtually every post is anti morrowind, so I'm assuming morrowind/TES fans went back and voted in it years later.

All these took around 45 seconds to look up btw.

Again regardless of my opinion on the game, I would say until around 2009-10 morrowind was generally disliked on the codex. Draq and jarlfrank fought a lonely battle for years.
