Archolos, without a doubt. The only RPG in quite some time that made me forget to eat.

0.95 of starsector was released in 2021, and given that the game won't be released in 1.0+ this decade, might as well vote for it.

Project: Eternity Shadorwun: Hong Kong Divinity: Original Sin 2 Pathfinder: Kingmaker
Archolos.
Pathfinder: wrath of the righteous.
Rance quest magnum. (English release)

Not a good year for RPGs, but there have been worse.

1. Archolos: Chronicles of Myrtana
2. Atom: Trudograd (left early access, so the real release date)
3. Encased - I see no love for this game on the forum. Sure, it's not finished but still a decent game Falloutlike with 30-40 hours content worth.

Codex Year of the Donut
noticing a distinct lack of votes for skyrim anniversary edition
Seeing how that game preinstalls a lot of subpar mods, its probably just a downgrade of a game that already wouldn't have won GOTY here.
Did anyone even play this on PC? Why would you buy and play a version of the game that's just premodded with a selection of mods you didn't even get to pick?

Strap Yourselves In Codex Year of the Donut Codex+ Now Streaming! Torment: Tides of Numenera Wasteland 2 Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Hmmm... let's think

Archolos - amazing/10
Pathfinder: WotR - cringeGarbage/10
Turdogard - nostalgia/10
Solasta - meh/10
Geneforge - grindfest/10
The Forgotten City - walkingSim/10
Redaxium - shit/10
Chernobylite - sureTotallyAnRPG/10
CarsFuckingDragons - actuallyHilarious/10
Diablo 2 remake - plsBlizztardBankrupt/10

So that's three decent games from 2021 I've played. But while Turdogard is a nice nostalgia, and CarsFucking dragons made me laugh with its writing and graphics, one of them is clearly above the others and Archolos really made me feel like I was a kiddo playing Gothic for the first time once again. Not only 2021 GotY but probably the best RPG since Bloodlines.

I haven't played any but I vote ATOM and Archolos. I double checked the rules and playing them wasn't a requirement so I'm backing the winning horses in solidarity with my codex bros.

Against the spirit of the competition... but not against the rules. I'll allow it, and will amend the rules next year.

I suppose of the games that got released this year which I played, I enjoyed King Arthur: Knight's Tale the most.
