My team has the sexiest and deadliest waifus you can recruit.
I don't mind any of the companions other than Octavia. Watching Amiri's so-called SJW archetype get completely subverted as her companion quest progresses is pretty amusing.

A lot of people don't care for Jubilost, but he and Nok Nok were two of my favorites. Given that companions didn't have much to say other than as part of their companion quests or in the largely meaningless campfire dialogues, a lot of them fell fairly flat. But I'd rather have that than another overwrought/hyper-dramatic Obsidian/Bioware romance sim.

As you said, the bar is fairly low. For me, they at least exceeded that.

Amiri and Jaethal should have been choices and Regongar and Octavia should not be options (who would want that garbage? Why even allocate resources to writing that?).

Amiri is just a meathead dudebro except a girl, some of the retarded things she says are actually funny. Jaethal is different though she understands all the other characters are shit and just disses them all the time also her story has some good character development (why didn't her alignment change?)

I think for a first attempt a lot of these characters can be forgiven, but they're gonna have to step it up big time in the companion department with the next game

I liked all companions except for Regongar and Kineticist sisters. Not that I disliked them, more just indifferent.
You didn't dislike the Half-Orc that wants to rape your asshole? That's very progressive of you
i once brought regongar to the stag lord fight

when I talked to akiros I had him intimidate the guy

thats when he said 'this is what I like about you, people just quiver when they talk to ya'

but my 19 int 7 cha ass won't even talk to people and it was clear that reg was the one intimidating

so there are only two logical explanations to this

regongar is the sort of person who talks to himself on the second to third person aloud after licking his own muscles out of sheer gym gayness

or he's kinda dumb

either way I still hate valerie more than him

Why do you hate Valerie?

Valerie is just a dumb broad who didn't really have any character development. She's not damaged goods anyway so automatically better than Regongar and Octavia.

hello my internal conflict is that I have divine beauty and everyone around me worships me too much because they just happen to be connected to the god of beauty

thats much more of a travesty than two people asking if you want a threesome

Pretty sure the internal conflict isn't that she's beautiful, but that that beauty prevented her from doing whatever it is she wanted to do. I only spoke to her once though, so no idea what comes next.

Reg could've been alright if he was not so gay. Jubilost meh, did not cared much for his ark and quests.
And yeah they all start SJW like but quest show how they are fucked up inside.
Valerie conflict is that she always was beautiful and tried to downplay it, but when she lost it due to scar she realized that in fact she enjoys it and starts behaving like an ass. Or something like that.

Neither do I, yet the introduction I got felt wrong. Personally what bothers me is the details. Everything revolves around the idea that she's so beautiful as to be an object of worship around her social circle. It would have been better if A) she's a noblewoman so people are too protective of her and B) the fact that she's beautiful pigeonholes her into roles she doesn't want for. Its a bit less clean and perfect than A) she's so beautiful it hurts, B) her family worships beauty, C) they are ok with her being a paladin of beauty, D) valerie is annoyed by how artsy fartsy all her suitors are and thus becomes an atheist(?).

I don't care for such stuff in my serious crpg and made 5 mercs asap, but still found it pretty funny how when you can talk with Valerie after the outpost fight she starts blabbering about being a divine beauty and how she's so beautiful that it only causes problems blah blah. Then you look at her avatar, consider how she is supposed to be a buffed up tank and are like errr wat, instead of already acknowledging before that she is super attractive which I guess is what was meant to happen.

Fwiw I still found the bard and the barbarian to ooze much more "look ma, imma writer, hurrrrrr".

Well to be honest except for the ruleset, char building and combat everything else in P:K is "meh" at most and that includes companions of course.
The worst for me (but I'm still somewhere in the middle of the game I assume) is the lack of environmental storytelling. Most areas feel like copy-paste wilderness/temple/whatever areas that don't really tell a story themselves. They feel like they are built to contain combat encounters.
And I'm sorry but in comparison to Deadfire for example the difference in that is enormous.
Generally I would say Deadfire is much better in all aspects EXCEPT ... the important ones. Like the things that you do most of the time, build your characters, equip them and fight.
That's my opinion so far, I imagine it won't be popular but it is what it is

- I am more or less forced to use a party where the strong physical fighters are female (Val, Amiri, Jaethal), and the healers are male (Tristian, Harrim). It is not the kind of party I wanted to adventure with, I wanted it the other way around. Or, at least, mix it up some more. Also, at the beginning of the game I was forced to have an all female party (my character aside) with Val, Amiri and Linzi. Wth?!

Don't play Harrim like an idiot for one. He's a buffer, not a healer. Cleric list has very potent buffs on it, especially when this game effectively gives you unlimited time before fights to buff. In-fact, healing HP in-combat at all is a terrible idea, with the only exception being unconsious allies, very low level, and the spell Heal.

What are the other ones? I agree that the maps are 10 times better in DF, but story and companions are, I'd argue, worse. PF:K's are more ...let's say traditional, while DF's try to be deep and fail spectacularly. I like Jaethal for one, at least the limited amount I played up to now. There's also a more immediate (or there at all) sense of adventure in PF:K, while DF *tries* to be a pirate adventure, yet doesn't go anywhere with that and it feels like you are platforming from one unrelated place to another. Pirates of the Sword Coast (the nwn official module) is better at being a pirate adventure than the whole of DF.

I think the worst aspects of PF:K come from the module itself, rather than Owlcat's designs, with the exception of the maps, they do kinda feel like NWN2's maps - empty, barren and samey. I saw 2 of the Kingmaker chapters in my local comic book/gaming store today and I'd like to find them all (or at least the first 2) and compare the pnp version to the video game.

She uglifies herself on purpose. It is very obvious. Or not so for some, i guess, considering how game never directly informs you about it, unlike e.g. about Jubilost's glasses.

Not surprisingly, those who miss it usually the loudest ones crying out about poor character design.

Lot of :edgy: and "i don't like character/archetype therefore he is badly written" "arguments" on last pages.

Let me put it this way: you have full right to believe her avatar/portrait represents someone who is a ripped frontline mofo who's the best tank in the lands and at the same time super divine beauty that hides her overwhelming looks because she's tired of incels.

Btw - even in the first few convos with her there are lines that directly contradict what you're saying, so it's not like the game is "hiding" anything, but whatever

I find the companions more interesting in Deadfire. More memorable if you prefer. In P:K they are very simplistic fantasy characters with some quirks. Plus their dialog is kinda stupid most of the time, they talk in an "unrealistic" way , like a cartoon of some sorts.
Also the general storytelling is better in Deadfire even if not something amazing. I mean the way scenes are described or how CYOA stories are told, they are better written for me.
And then you can go on the technical aspects where I believe that Deadfire is massively better especially graphically. I also prefer the music of it, the spell effects, the clarity of the UI etc

*I do agree that the setting probably helps with this "generic" fantasy feeling of course

Found and fought a group of boggarts to the west at some riverside leisure area. Probably shouldn't have fought them, given that my party is an average level of 4 and they were all 7s. Everything was going pretty well, until there was this last berserker that wouldn't die. It then killed every single party member in one hit, including 3 consecutive natural 20 critical hits. Looked at the log. This fucker also has a strength modifier of +15, so 45 STR--if I am correct. Nice to know that random boggarts can be far stronger than an ancient gargantuan red dragon (STR 39). Not sure if it's more fucked up than Smolderburn casting Shield. Only slightly butt-hurt. Given that it wasn't the only one, I'm amazed I had survived the others.

They’re dumb as rocks. If you insist on attacking strengths, better be pretty damn good. Much easier to attack weaknesses.

+ 15 STR is 40. As a Barb he’s getting a boost from Rage and what not, just as you can do. Maybe Enlarged, etc by his casters.

Thanks coach. Next time I'll try and stab its Intelligence. I had already killed one, and 3 of the other smaller ones in the same battle. It only started hitting after the Glitterdust wore off and I was out of all other debuff spells. It was not enlarged, but enraged. Which is to say it had an innate strength of 36, which is pretty bullshit. The three consecutive natural 20 crits didn't help either. I'll need to make an offering to the RNG gods before my next session. The time limits have been fun, as they have compelled me to see how far I can stretch myself. These uber encounters they sprinkle throughout the areas are definitely a toll for completionists to pay. I've had to modify my strategy to where my paths have to be recursive.
  1. Explore an area.
  2. Clear >75%, identifying and leaving major encounters.
  3. Repeat until depleted.
  4. Return to Oleg's sell/rest.
  5. Chart a course which prioritizes a tough encounter that I tailor to, then return to step 1.
It's cool. Very different from the ordinary two step process of Seek & Destroy. I use consumables regularly and part as my strategy--something I haven't done (or needed to) since I was a preteen.
There are spells, and even abilities, in the game other than Glitterdust, Porky.

If you think that’s a tough fight you’ve got a whole game yet to discover. Looks like you’ll enjoy it.

Oh wow! Thanks again Coach! Up until now the rest of my spell slot were empty. Not one Color Spray, Grease, Hideous Laughter, or Web memorized. Just Glitterdust and nothing else. Thanks for assuming I have zero knowledge of this game's mechanics because I griped at a boggart having strength modifier greater than an ancient gargantuan red dragon. Your tutelage is proving invaluable. K thanx!

You don't need to clear everything now, it does not go anywhere and you can come back later at higher level and in next Act.

That's actually good to know. Thank you.

Companions in Deadfire are definitely more "memorable", but that is because they are very obviously "internet in current year". You know, gay human fish that fucks around, anti-clerical human bird and all that jazz. If I had to choose I would pick the more conservative approach of Kingmaker, the tired "stronk wymyn" trope doesn't bother me much. In the end, I salute both games for allowing full party creation.

Those aren't the spell and abilities I was talking about, but they are the ones I figured you were using. There are better ones. I will continue to coach as long as you continue to obviously need it.

But yeah best idea isn't to be there yet at all since they forgot to itemize the cave.
