Wouldn't even have to be all melee. The Red Hand does fucking broken damage even if you don't use active abilities. Ranger/Fighter and Cipher/Fighter in the backline, and 3 multiclassed Chanters in the front all spamming the stun invocation.

The backline heals itself and has huge passive bonuses to damage, the frontline heals itself and keeps everybody CC'ed forever.

You can using stealth. Speaking of which, I think it's a wasted opportunity to not have a stealth themed DLC.

Deadfire is the only isometric CRPG with a functional stealth system. Enemies have line of vision, respond to noises and light sources, and will call reinforcements if spotted.

Grab the Codex by the pussy Pathfinder: Wrath
I was skeptical of Woedica's Challenge but it seems like the game could have meaningful resting restrictions when that challenge is played alongside the Eothas and Rymrgand challenges.
You can't possibly finish the game on PotD, I'd say not even on Hard, with Eothas' and Woedica's challenges both on. I challenge you to try :)

Hard is extremely easy to solo, let alone finish with a party; I don't think the challenges will fundamentally change that.

As for PotD, I haven't played post-3.0 so I don't know the extent of the late-game difficulty rebalancing, but I suspect one'd need to rely on Stealth, Ciphers, and Chanters to get through it.

Finally got into SSS tonight, and made it about halfway through, I think.

Good:
Fights are tactically interesting. Good mix of creatures, enemies use some abilities I don't remember seeing them use often in the main game. I saw a wizard use mirror image and put up a sphere at the same time, and it felt a little like BG2 for a second. Battle gimmicks take some thinking to overcome, but usually not much. Had a few character knockouts and a few emergency casts of withdraw, but no TPKs.

Not so good:
Tacking a story arc onto an arena DLC doesn't really work well. Could honestly care less about any of the lore for this section of the game. The statue that starts and ends the fights is pure verbal cancer.

The scripted events from the first game were used sparingly and were quick to finish. Here they drag on and on and basically serve as excuses to injure your party.

Bad:
Maybe it's just me, but the game seems to perform much worse on the arena maps than in other sections of the game. It wasn't unplayable, but it was far from enjoyable.

Eh, Red Hand is good, but you're exaggerating. It has been proven that the top hunting bows with modal (Aamina's Legacy, that animancer bow) outdamage it when in capable hands.
Also the aoe damage weapons tend to do a lot more dps overall. Red Hand is good because it doesn't need any supporting abilities to be good (and, like other firearms, lets you cast immediately after firing - quite nice for an Ascendant for example). Also fast elimination of priority targets is admittedly great.

80 new reviews added and it's still 94%. We're only .1% away from reaching 82%

:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

It is sad that only now people realize the game is actually stellar. Obviously the war this game suffered at the hands of the retarded anti-Obsidian circlejerk in places like the codex didn't help matters. It is for morons like these that the CRPG genre suffers dark ages from time to time, morons who don't really like crpgs and complain about everything.

I am sorry, my friend, but you are an idiot.

Except even the Codex was mostly positive about the game and it is an overall improvement over PoE1 in the aspects that count*. Its failure has nothing to do with anyone "hating" on it.

* with massive compromises like this franchise normally has to be consumed

People justly criticized Deadfire's lousy main quest, and that hasn't been rewritten as of yet.

Four years ago this site was full of Obsidian fanboys, and then they release a single mediocre game and everyone loses their damn minds.

Now they release a sequel that improves on everything the codex complained about, and then patch everything new the codex finds to complain about, and they're still treated with disrespect.

The Sawyer philosophy is that "balancing is never done" but once you release writing out into the world, that's it, absolutely no changes (other than additions through expansions and DLC).

(additionally, thanks to Feargus, any changes would also require the additional cost of new voice over)

As Bertrand Russell said (paraphrased), man must never hold developers (philosophers) in contempt or reverence. Through contempt, you fail to consider their ideas, and through reverence, you fail to criticize them.

That mediocre game was one they asked people to support upfront in lieu of a traditional publisher as a show of good faith. You can’t unopen that Pandora’s box.

You seem to be the only person here who sees the second game as a complete success (hence your tag), while the rest of this thread has found things to both compliment and criticize.

Why are we pretending that Pillars is the first mediocre Obsidian game? Did we all agree to forget about Dungeon Siege III? If so, I'm all for it. Please send the man with the lobotomy kit to my house along with my free copy of Fallout 76.
