Woah, it looks pretty good too. I'm guessing it's Taiwanese? I'm still surprised either way. That publisher is also bringing out Showa American Story, which I almost forgot about. It's kinda similar and something to keep an eye on.

Yeah I was going to make a thread on Showa American Story but never got around to it then Elon's changes to twitter made it hard to get updates on it. Technically My Time at Portia is post apocalyptic.

There is also the Home Behind series for stuff similar to Dust to the End but at least the second one has Tencent's keylogging ACE DRM in it so I wouldn't recommend buying either to be safe.

Kind of interesting how a flash series inspired the chinese so.

I've been looking for something like Fallout too, but I'm starting to think the Ministry of Culture would never accept a portrayal of society like that. It's Wuxia/cultivation all the way down I'm afraid.
Yeah they crack down on anything remotely dour about china see Nobody the Turn Around which was briefly available for sale before it drew the attention of the CCCP.

I have an eye on their weibo since the trailer released but there is no update on it.
Good news is that they are alive and developing.

Not exactly a Fallout clone, but a post-apocalyptic Chinese RPG/Survival game.

This looks pretty neat. The overworld and trade system vaguely remind me of Low Magic Age, which endears it to me right away.

I imagine Dust to End isn't Taiwanese, since the game doesn't have a Traditional Chinese option.

Dream Sketcher comes out in 6 days with an English translation:

I tried it during the Steam demo fest, was extremely interesting, it's a Call of Cthulhu-like investigation game for 1-4 players, with multiple scenarios.

There's also this, though it's more on the Action RPG side of things.

Blade and Sword indeed is Diablo clone

Had a pretty cool feature (at least when I played it almost 2 decades ago?) where you can have a custom chain of skills being string together.

So you can do those cool kung fu movie shit where the character are chaining their skills and calling out the attacks with one button

I tried the demo and it was quite charming, especially the little mini-games when exploring. I also like that there's overland travel and not just going port to port. Game mechanics are a bit too simplified for my taste

In the coming years Indonesia will become the new capital of incline. Remember this post.

Sadly game dev are still limited to small studio of enthusiast as most of them are not really getting funding from local investors which means team are small and usually young (where mediocre pay is OK)

I am friends with several people working in the industry and profitability margin in general is still thin, often times the studio would need to take non-gaming projects too. Altho lately the older studios are trying to push on and basically support newcomers to make entry to gamedev easier too.

Is there a list of top chinese RPGs somewhere on the codex? I keep seeing people say that modern chinese rpgs are better than western ones but it's not clear to me what GOOD chinese rpgs even EXIST.

It really depends on what kind of RPG you like and your tolerance for bad translations. AFAIK, these are the main ones so far:
  • Ho Tu Lo Shu - Open World Wuxia, Turn-based, Party-based, it's a fantastic game but a bit janky and only has horrible machine translation.

  • Tale of Immortal - An open-world roguelike about cultivation, where you train to become an immortal, join sects and learn secret arts. It's extremely popular and influential for Chinese devs.

  • Sands of Salzaar - Basically Mount & Blade with top-down view and a Fantasy setting.

  • Hero’s Adventure - Already very popular and set to leave Early Acess this month, is an open-world Wuxia RPG with lots of build options and choice & consequence.

  • Warm Snow - Hades-like action-roguelike. Very popular, it sold over 2 million on PC.

  • Devil Slayer - Raksasi - Same as above, but focused on multiple characters (I actually like this one more, even though is way less popular)

  • Amazing Cultivation Simulator - Dwarf Fortress, but you are building a sect of martial artists and trying to reach immortality.

  • Tale of Wuxia - A remake of one of China's most iconic RPGs, it mixes tactical combat with Princess Maker-like raising sim elements, as you train your dude to become a martial artist and go on quests with tons of choice & consequences. Translation is understandable, but poor. Has a sequel and a spin-off.

  • GuJian 3 - A "almost-AAA" Action-RPG, plays kinda like a linear The Witcher 3 but with party-menbers (that you can't control). Slow-paced, focused on its story, but I really enjoyed it.

  • Sword and Fairy 7 - A big AAA RPG from one of China's most iconic series. The translation isn't the best, but it's a solid JRPG-like adventure with a typical Chinese RPG plot.

  • Banner of the Maid - A mix of Final Fantasy Tactics & Fire Emblem, it's a story-heavy game set during the French Revolution.

  • Wandering Sword - A more traditional party-based RPG, with Octopath-like graphics.

  • Volcano Princess - Very cute Princess Maker clone, is reviewing extremely well (22,000 reviews, 97% positive)

  • Bloody Spell - An Action RPG kinda like the old Onimusha games. Extremely janky and low-budget, but has some fun moments. Became mega-popular due to all the sexy ladies.

  • My Time at Portia / My Time at Sandrock - 3D farming games (kinda like Harvest Moon) with RPG and survival elements

  • Yi Xian: The Cultivation Card Game - A deckbuilding roguelike, the focus is on PvP battles against 8 players, but it has a really fun single-player roguelike mode too. One of my favorite games of last year.

  • The Vagrant - 2D side-scrolling RPG beat'em up, kinda like Vanillaware games or Salt & Sanctuary.
There are many more, but I think these are the biggest ones. All of these are good games but, of course, not everyone can handle bad translations, and there's people who will say stuff like Hero's Adventure is UNPLAYABLE because of the art style.

Thanks, very informative. I did know about a couple of those (sands of salzaar, my time at portia, and amazing cultivation simulator) but I wouldn't have defined those as rpgs personally. Still lots of new suggestions, I'll try some of them out.

its probably better to play the "classics" before the modern ones, the ones in pepe's book. though they are mostly abandonware

Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is. Shadorwun: Hong Kong Divinity: Original Sin 2 Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Pathfinder: Wrath I'm very into cock and ball torture I helped put crap in Monomyth
Faith of Danschant is basically Chinese Final Fantasy.

The Scroll of Taiwu is a bit of everything.

Path of Wuxia is made by the Tale of Wuxia, Pre-sequel, and Ho Tu Lo Shu studio.

Xuan-Yuan 7 is a competent action rpg.

There's more if one has the patience to search. There are Steam curators to check out.
