Can I get an informative TL;DR on this? what happened? I was hoping to see a demo of it on the Steam RPG festival thing.
There once was a nazi with an obsession for feet
One of his companions performed a misdeed
And then we could not see his post history
Lo; he was removed from his position by the authority

I have never seen that trailer before showing the 2013 release date. I'm glad I learned about this game when it was already honorary vaporware. I can understand why people are sour about this failing to launch.

Jarl was the heart and soul of that thing. If it dies maybe we can pick it up for peanuts so he can finish it.

There are a bad amount of people who would literally not buy the game just because his name is attached to it once they find out who he is. A Realms beyond picked up and finished by frank will undoubtedly fail. Might be a fun game though.

You don't have to sell to everyone. Not all games have to be made with maximum sales in mind in any case, or any sales at all. JarlFrank was working as a volunteer in the first place, wasn't he? And Pierre isn't exactly marketing his game his game like crazy either. Your mistake is that you think that communism and capitalism are opposites. Nothing could be further from the truth. Wall Street bankrolled the Bolsheviks.

Not really.

The function of capitalism isn't to make as much profit as you can, but to make as much as you need to get what you want out of life.

For corporations and other core capitalists, it just so happens what they want out of life is more profit. For them, there aren't any other considerations because for them they're mostly or completely in it for the money.

For indie game developers, it is usually making enough cash to break even and maybe start development on your next game.

If Vault Dweller and friends were motivated by as much profit as possible, they wouldn't be making indie games.

The function of capitalism and profit maximization is selling the right good, at the right price to the right people.

For some that means, selling the cheapest good, at the highest price to the dumbest people.
Sometimes this works out. Normally, it's not a good long-term plan - even though, idiocy is a very persistent personality trait.
Either way, it's the customers fault for working out in the first place.

But Realms Beyond is none of that.
They could be selling the right good, at the right price to the right people.
It's just that they dug themself into a hole too deep to even get to that point (with the exception of a kickstarter, which always holds the risk of failure, so the principle above only applies in a limited way).

The fattest part of any population is the midwits, not the dipshits. The hard part is getting your population right.

SJWs don't buy video games.

Turns out working at the REEE factory doesn't pay much.

twitch critical role nerd culture crowd doesnt buy games either otherwise pillars of eternity 2 would have a lot more sales. Its funny when developers listen to these online groups cause they do not play video games at least the ones crpg gamers care about.
