The biggest problem with the way the gimballs work is that they put the advantage in the hands of mouse & keyboard users, which makes a joystick for a space sim absolutely worthless. Ideally you'd have something which is control setup neutral like in ED, where the gimballs track independently of the pilot's input, with just enough inaccuracy to make fixed weapons worthwhile.
Not true. You'd fly with the stick, and shoot the guns with the mouse. Otherwise you end up tracking towards your aim point, always, which reduces your options.

That has even less functionality than the mouse + keyboard. You want your fingers to be within reach of as many controls as possible, so unless you're buying an expensive joystick with plenty of buttons within reach of thumb & fingers without having to move your hand that setup wouldn't even be worth experimenting with. Star Citizen is still modeling a lot of flight control, even if the combat elements are popamole.

I don't know why people are debating the best control system for Star Citizen. It is obvious that the game is meant to be played with an x-box controller. :)

Space combat done right: Lost Fleet, Through Struggle the Stars, Forever War
Space combat done wrong: Honor fucking Harrington, The Night's Dawn
Space combat that is dumb because it has 1-man fighters, but at least tries not to be completely silly: Babylon 5, Space: Above and Beyond (I want HD edition of that so bad)
Space combat done silly: Star Wars, Star Trek, BSG, pretty much all computer games (there are couple of good ones like I-War 1/2, Freespace 1/2, and Homeworld 1/2 but they are still silly).

As you can see, there is not a single computer game in that list. You know why? Because realistic space fight would be boring waiting for ages and then miliseconds (if that) of action. If your favorite book/movie/whatever is not on the above list, chances are it would fall into silly category.

If you read Forever War and like it, check out Forever Peace too. That did a good job speculating about how the world would be today and the actual economics and politics of a post-scarcity economy.

Ultimately, the mouse-waving gimbaling bullshit (and Chris Roberts' defense of same, though it was couched with promises to "look into controller agnosticity") was the #1 factor in my disillusionment with this game.

The game could very well still be a big, fun sandbox space game, but I already played EVE Online off and on for six years, and I don't give a FUCK about any of that without a solid ship-to-ship combat implementation.

Did Wing Commander have realistic Newtonian space combat? Not sure why anybody would assume this game was going to be any different from any other game Chris Roberts has made. Stick to being disappointed for things that are expected to be in the game (which might end up being shit), and let's not bitch about the lack of shit that was never likely to make it in the first place. This is basically just another Christ Roberts space sim, just with added delusions of grandeur.

As for the gimbaling issue, i guess this is what the Star Citizen combat experience is going to be like:

Whole PAX infodump about things that do not exist was published, see below. Hour of talking, has it's interesting moments.

And yes, you can buy a fedora in space (17:45). Douchebags of the universe - rejoice.

That's a terrible, terrible thing to say. Everything after Forever War is complete and utter crap. Forever Peace magically fixes completely crappy economy and society by virtue of cyber-brainwashing (green ending? or was it blue?). Forever Free has such a stupid ending I could hardly believe it is by the same author as FW. Go to the book thread and search for those titles. I think both me and one other guy wrote a short review of those.

Unless you're firing an effectively hitscan weapon (so realistic laser or particle beam), precise manual aiming isn't particularly gamebreaking.

It is game-breaking if you aren't keen on a computer mouse being far and away the superior input mechanism for aiming, not to mention the necessarily simplified/automated maneuvering you'll be relegated to when playing what is essentially a slow-mo first-person shooter. This is supposed to be a space combat sim, not a first-person shooter.

Also, Chris has defended many of his design decisions on the basis that Star Citizen will play like "WWII dogfighting in space"; curiously, computer-guided turrets that by complete coincidence ensure you'll never want to use anything but a mouse are an exception to that doctrine.

In actual WWII dogfights, maneuvering was incredibly important.

1 - Fuck youknowyouknowyouknowyouknowyouknow guy. With an elephant's steel dick.
2 - I liked some of the early planetside locations, there's a good diversity of different styles. (at least for human-centered planets) Will see in coming releases if they have decent enough worldbuilding skill to take advantage of that.
3 - UI seems... well I don't know, it could end up good or painfully unusable, you never know with these AR things. I tend to like boring but useful tables with, you know, in-for-ma-tion. But I'm willing to give it a shot.
4 - Wormhole X-treme!
5 - Regardless of the end product, their concept art is FUCKING AWESOME. I want to paint myself with this shit.
6 - Piracy could end up being a fun trolling passtime. I'd really like an RPG Codex machete rape gang so we can fuck shit up as a family.
7 - Squadron 42 feature film starring that guy from battlestar galactica FTW.

Space fedora

This game is probably going to end up like Planetside 2 and Team fortress.
Original design given up for some easy money... because people love hats!

Welp, I'm happy I set a policy for myself not to buy anything more than the basic ship I have now until hard date on gameplay and balance comes out. I'd love an Avenger though.

The same Avenger people QQ about in official forums? Last patch to AC denoted that "front mount is now accepting only avenger-specific gun", which, being crap from the start, constantly gets nerfed for no reason whatsoever.

hopefully they will finally make up their mind and stop applying extreme OP/nerf curve to everything before game launches.

But it is a nice penguin, I'll give you that (like it more than my 325)

IT got nerfed real hard this patch, before it was a nible fighter machine, now it is supposedly a lot more cumbersome. And being limited to the Tigersomething on the front (which, in itself needs fixing) doesn't look good.

I'd wait and see what future brings, after all it is still alpha.

Thanks. Yeah, gotta wait and see. I liked the idea of flying military surplus but the whole role playing before the game is even out is really on a high level of faggotry.
