more news from that con.

in SQ42 campaign first part (as there will be more) there will be about 10h of final full performance. So it is safe to say about 15+ hours of cutscenes aside from missions and gameplay

To give you an idea. MGS4 which was one of the most cutscene ridden game with cutscenes often going for more than 40 minutes has something like 13h of cut-scenes.

That's like saying 'exquisite shit.'

In therms of quality and content. Not design wise. 270 people working on it will show.

------------------------

BTW their motion capture tech is amazing you should watch SC con. They are basically doing what LA Noire did just without photos but with real time rendering. Crazy stuff.

tech for motion capture they are currently using in game real time:

also stuff you might missed due to huge lore dump over the years:

Very nice cast. The speech is pretty cliche and cheesy, but I'm not sure what else you could do with it. Maybe a somewhat cheesy 90's feel is kind of what they were going for.

They've been writing the lore of the universe for years now, i've read a little of the recent stuff which help puts context and adds to this cut-scene.

It's supposed to be like that because it is pure propaganda, the "Vanduul attack" happened the same week as a vote to make huge cuts in military spending, it's speculated (not in lore, but by backers) that the military attacked or allowed the planet to be attacked to rally humans to go to war

umm... did you know Wing Commander 3-5 exist, and SC (well, the SQ42 part at least) is supposed to be a "spiritual sequel"?

Not directly related to this post, but you know what's funny is: during the presentation Roberts never talked about WC5, he always made comparisons like that: "we have only so much hours Motion Capturing for WC3 and WC4 but sooooooooo much more hours for SQ42. We have so much story script in WC3 and WC4, but soooooooooo much more in SQ42.

It's like he completely forgot about WC5... omitted like an unloved stepchild.

I never even played WC5. Wasn't it released in some odd download format? Yeah downloadable games aren't odd today but back then it was.

For those of you that don't already have a game package or want to play with your friends that don't have one their is currently a free flight week in progress (which basically means you can play the game for free and have access to all currently available ships).

Enter the code CITCONFLIGHT2K15 you can go here to activate it.

30GB. You can jack off to virtual car detailers RIGHT NOW

That map is shit.
Cartoonish and riddled with silly fluff.
They had consulted astrophysicist for that thing?

Astrophysicist told them that planets are kind of objects floating in space and there is usually a star in center :D
It works as map in game too. You can plan route from this and it will be updated in game (when PU launches)

I guess the money is well spent then, since this was part of the kickstarter list. I just find it a bit odd that there is so much focus on voice-celebs and facial expressions... for a space sim. I mean, the voice-acting I can get somewhat, but since the game is far from finished it just smells a bit strange when they are announcing all these voice-actors while having nothing really to show for. And yes, I watched the 20 minutes video of 2.0. But it didn't really show anything that I hadn't seen before. The facial expressions thingy just seems excessive. I got that Crytek feeling about it. It looks pretty and the tech is cool but it will be completely meaningless when you actually play the game.

the kinda sequel (Secret Ops) was released as a free downloadable game with new missions on a weekly basis (later bundled with WC5). i think it's still a free download (it just doesn't have any live action cutscenes, but are all in-engine). it's a decent game iirc

You are literally wondering why it is so important to game that supposed to be next generation wing commander.

Squadron 42 is full on story campaign with all bells and whistles like in old space sim games like freelancer, wingcommander and so on. Story, dialogs, wingmen, campaign and so on.

Star Citizent is kind of persistent universe in world of Squadron 42 campaign. People don't call it MMO because that part will work offline and will work entirely via AI. When you log in it will be online and players will populate universe.

BTW here is their first take on SQ42. It is pre alfa mokup test of their real time animation system and various other system. Buggy but works this is how SQ42 will play out:

When you look at their website and the monetisation that is going on there you can seee that they are trying to make this a long ongoing process by creating a longstanding community/society around an entire franchise. They are aiming for the longshot, not just a single game. If that turns out well we will see.

Squadron 42 seems to become the next step in Wing Commander; besides space battles and "walking" around in your carrier ship you will do some first person action as well.
I imagine it as an interactive BSG movie with egoshooter-like scenes and lots of dogfight action in your ship.

Maybe the whole concept will crash and burn before it gets finalized.

Personally I think Squadron 42 will get released and will be a very good new space sim. Star citizen will finally get released as well but not fulfilling its expectations. But it will have strong following community and it will get slowly improved / expanded by addons.

Personally, I secretly hope this is actually a social experiment to see how retarded the average videogame player is.

WC6 / SQ 42 is all I want from CR, I don't have the time and more importantly the nerve for MMOs anymore. But from what I saw yesterday, a 2016 release seems to be optimistic, unless they want to pull a "Unity".

The whole SC 2.0 wasn't very convincing either. Admittedly, I follow the progress only cursory, but I thought they released space flight and dogfights along time ago?

Then you must refer your friends to buy this game to make it happen.

The 2.0 thing was supposed to showcase the following achievements:
1. Converting the engine into 64-bit to allow maps to be 8 billion kilometers across (up from 8km)
2. Turning the standard CryEngine FPS into an ArmA like system
3. Local physics grids
4. Zoning system with instances
5. Rudimentary mission system
6. Uniting all development streams into one
The last part is why they did all this stuff seamlessly in one session, as we've only seen it broken up in parts until now. It's a huge milestone, at least according to them.

If this game turns out shit, somebody else should make a game in this style. That gameplay footage really revved my engine.

No, that was the "standalone DLC" Secret Ops. First downloadable game I ever played and also the first episodic one.

WC5 aka Prophecy came on like 3 discs (I still have the box somewhere) and especially the cutscenes were a huge improvement over the hilarious bobble-headed fursuits of 3 and 4. At least the enemy there looked really alien.
