After many thought "Theatres of War" was canned as it was shown at last citizencon and never spoken about at all, looks like CIG outsourced its creation to another studio entirely FIRESPRITE. Apparently game/gamemode will go into player testing in a week.

Moreover this team will rework both Starmarine and Wing commander modes later this year to use Theatres of War as a base.

So with it there will be 4 modes in SC:

- Starmarine - FPS mode. Team deathmatch/team lms, team bomb etc
- Wing Commandr - Ship arcade mode where you fight with waves solo or in group
- Teatres of War - Combined arms mode with different objectives on bigger maps much like battlefied etc
- Persisten Universe - Standard mmo sc.

Cloud Imperium Games and Firesprite Unveil Development Partnership for Star Citizen Multiplayer Mode

UK-based Developer’s Key Role in Development of Star Citizen Combined Arms Multiplayer Mode Confirmed Ahead of Community Playtest

LONDON, March 18th , 2021 – Today Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) and Firesprite publicly announced collaboration on the forthcoming Star Citizen multiplayer mode, “Theaters of War” (working title). This announcement comes as the ground-breaking multiplayer combined arms mode approaches its latest closed test within Star Citizen’s handpicked Evocati community.

Star Citizen’s “Theaters of War” mode is a PvP multiplayer experience first unveiled at Citizen-Con 2019. Gameplay features intense, large-scale, team-based skirmishes between attackers and defenders across multiple phases of combat on planetary surfaces, in upper atmosphere, and a final orbital assault on a space station.

Firesprite’s collaboration with CIG on Theaters of War began in early 2019, when CIG outlined the vision for a multiplayer combined-arms experience taking place within the Star Citizen universe. Since then, Firesprite and CIG have collaborated to design and build this experience utilizing Star Citizen’s proprietary technology, tools, and game assets. The combined learnings and advancements made for the combined-arms game mode have benefited and continue to benefit the core gameplay of both Star Citizen and Squadron 42.

“Thanks to the talented team at Firesprite, we’ve managed to work closely together to bring significant improvements to Star Citizen’s Theaters of War mode, and as a result benefit key aspects of Star Citizen and Squadron 42,” said Sean Tracy, Technical Director, Content at Cloud Imperium Games. “I can’t wait for players to see the progress we’ve made together during future playtests.”

“We’re so excited to be able to convey what a privilege and a pleasure it’s been to work so closely with Cloud Imperium and develop Theaters of War from the kernel of an idea into a full-fledged experience,” said Graeme Ankers, Managing Director at Firesprite. “I want to pay tribute to our strike team here at Firesprite who have worked really hard behind the scenes in close collaboration with the talented creators at Cloud Imperium Games.”

Theaters of War was first unveiled at CitizenCon 2019 in Manchester, UK, with positively received test sessions for event attendees. From that event onwards, player feedback from Theaters of War closed tests for select Star Citizen community groups has been vital for improving the combined arms mode’s quality. Further online closed community tests are scheduled to begin this coming weekend, with more playtests to come throughout the mode’s development. This combined arms mode will continue to see iteration and development to help progress Star Citizen’s and Squadron 42’s combat, and future tests will expand beyond the closed Evocati group to eventually include players in the Public Test Universe.

Star Citizen combines classic space sim gameplay with boundary-pushing visuals in a massively multiplayer setting with unprecedented fidelity. Live how you want to live: shift paths from cargo hauler to outlaw, explorer, or any other role, whenever you want. Explore multiple planets and moons, including vast cities and underground caverns, all created with a unique combination of procedural planet technology and complementary hand-crafted design.

For further information, including how to download and play Star Citizen, visit the official website. Enlist today and join this ever-expanding universe by visiting the game’s Welcome Hub and Guide System for tips on how to play. Millions of players from around the world have already joined to help CIG build the most ambitious game ever made. For continued updates, keep up with Star Citizen on Facebook, Instagram, Twitch, Twitter and YouTube.

That was a decent troll post, rusty, but not that good. I rate it MEDIUM TROLLEY.

Thank you. That will be $22.00.

I don't know dude, until that last post he had me.

But again, I think I remember that guy prasing Fallout 76 at launch page after page, so its always kind of hard to be sure if the mofo is serious or just being extra special, thus I give him one n a half handcrafted medium trolley's.

That's fantastic news! Now Chris Roberts can fail to deliver not one game, but four!

?? Both starmarine and arena commander work flawlessly as they are detached from main servers and work on arenas. Starmarine has some issues with performance on some maps but overall both work great.

Imho they are doing it via external studio to revitalize both and this new mode in order to get people from those RS Siege CSGO, battlefield and other games like that.

I wouldn't be shocked if they would later release all those modes as freetoplay to work as kind of both another revenue stream and advert for SC.

I'm being serious now Perkel, can you tell me how can I play either Starmarine or Arena Commander. I'm fully willing to give them a go, as long as I don't have to spend stupid amount of money on it (i.e. more than a pint's worth)

In order to play it you have to have SC copy aka shell out $55 i got my copy because someone gifted it me. Imho don't spend money on it. As much as they work great they have not a lot of people playing them so you either will have to wait a lot of time for full cap match or you will have to play with bots. In case of Star Marine there isn't even bot support so you will have to wait a long time to get full cap match.

Start game up and choose starmarine/arenacommander that is it as they are different options in main menu.

Might as well just yt it instead of spending money. Star Marine is great as long as there are enough players. From my experience gameplay is great as you have nice weight to everything you do unlike most of FPSes and there is some extra complexity in maps with EVA capability.

Arena Commander is arcade like mode where you defeat waves of enemies and ammo/health etc pop up after killing enemies to continue fight or player vs player. This mode also shows greatly how much servers are hampering performance as in this mode you can get to 100+ fps with decent amount of ships in screen vs SC PU where 15 ships and your FPS goes to 30fps in space or worse.

Thanks Perkel. However, I don't want to watch gameplay - I never do. IMO, you can't feel whether the game is good or not without playing. Game is more than visuals, it's how what you see relates to your actions, how pleasant (or not) the game feels to control, how it presents its systems to you, and how it provides you with opportunities to learn and master those systems. None of which can be experienced watching it.
I guess I'll wait for another free weekend to try again.

yeah wait for free week. They go online 3-4 times a year. Considering last one i think was at start of this year next one shouldn't be far off. I have 80$ in store credit after i melted my gifted package but i can't gift it to anyone because jews at CIG say gifting is only possible for cold hard cash. So it kind of sits there useless. If not for this stupid rule i would gift 2 people access.

the only way someone could save the Star Citizen ship combat is if the lead indicators are taken out completely and ships will have a real feel of inertia with rolls not being totally trivial

Inertia is still WIP. The flight model in space will be finalized after they will finish components and materials work.

All outside of Size1 weapons gimballed go down 1 in size. Meaning that if you gumball weapon you reduce damage more or less in half so fixed weapons now are actually strong in right hands.

The leading. I don't think such a thing could be done with type of combat SC tries to go for. This type of combat only can be achieved with very limited set of weapons that are more hitscan like rather than projectiles and ship combat speed would need to be slow so there couldn't be vast distance between ships.

Leading also it has its own issues even now. I you fight against small ship and someone that can actually fly leading + gimball assist could basically lead to your death because leading doesn't have forward prediction just linear prediction so constant strafe = almost no damage.

Imagine that, the words "finalized" n "finish" in one single sentence about SC.

I fucking love Perkel.

how do I get people to give me $330+ million dollars to lie to them while they defend me online?

Sort of the same way that companies such as Bethesda do, selling 40-60$ early access’s, that remain broken for years, or even filled with nasty ass gameplay affecting microtransactions, while dem fangirls still go around forums defending that sort of bullshit… people are just dumb I guess, crazy, I know.

CIG is still at it. They haven't given up. They have however said that old-timer backers - typically concierges - doesn't need to keep spending. There are enough new players coming in. Think about that. We are providing 650 people with jobs. I have fun playing as it is.
We saw with Cyberpunk that these big new games are much, much, much more difficult to develop than anybody had antecipated. Google gave up on their Stadia efforts. Amazon are struggling with their releases.
CIG is doing their best. They might not be the most effectively run company in the world, but they are definitely making progress. Their development efforts are a beacon of hope for OASIS-scale projects in the future. If they some day get to a successful release other studios will see that it is possible and maybe attempt something similar. But unless technology like server meshing kan be open-sourced and shared, these new projects will take equally long time.
We are looking at 10-years development as a new normal for larger projects. Having "players" as "testers" during development is probably a way this can work without excorbitant investor capital.

I develop myself, and I am just begtinning to understand how massive this undertaking is. By all means - do vent your frustrations every now and then. I do so myself, but don't point the scam finger at CIG. That is really unfair. It's OK to be impatient, but not to spread rumours about the motives and intentions of the employyes at CIG. They are obviously invested in this project as both future players and believers in what can be achieved.

Remember - server meshing might not work. It's a theory. A possible solution. It might have to be scrapped and a new solution invented. Which might easily add another 5 years of development time. This is the soone age of computing and lartge scale VR-worlds still. Don't knock it. It kinda already works.

According to some of the Evocati leaks, they have ICache in some of the developmental builds. Whilst they haven't released that for testing yet, it's starting to look like that might be coming online. And ICache was one of the big blockers. So we'll see what happens from there.

Yeah, its fucking impressive, shit… I can’t even imagine any other company holding this long while making the kind of cash CIG is making without even having to release a product :D

They have however said that old-timer backers - typically concierges - doesn't need to keep spending.

Wush, thank fucking god… after almost 10 years, and 350 million dollars down the road, we can finally put our wallets down? Can we, really? Daddy Chris won’t be mad? Daddy Chris always gets cranky when he is kept off his yatch for too long.

We are providing 650 people with jobs.

Ah yes we are, yes we are! … who’s a good boii, the goodest boiii!?!
Some very special jobs too! Just ask daddy Chris close family members.

Good thing the entire thing ain’t relying on it then, right? RIGHT?!

Ah yes, star citizen, just as soon as quantum computing hits, because…
