How much power could those solar arrays give to a ship?
:hmmm:
Ban Curious_Tongue.

It's not a satellite, it's an artificial environment in space. That thing would use a lot of energy.

Slolar power suggests that the technology those ships are using isn't that exotic.
Again, ban Curious_Tongue.

Those are not solar arrays, you don't even know what you don't know.

It looks like an array of solar panels to me.

Define solar array for us please Draq.

(He's probably just trying to be pedantic and call it a solar module array.)

Ban Flunklesnarkin. Attack vector ships use fusion torches for propulsion. That means that they have a fusion reactor to provide power. Hopefully it is quite clear why you wouldn't need solar panels in such setup. You would need heat radiators though. Look up schematic of ISS on wikipedia to see how those things are really different, yet look similar (to a untrained eye).

That shit still looks like a solar array.

If you aspie retards are losing your mind over it this much you should contact the designers of the game. Who knows what the retards at Star Citizen were thinking when they added the solar array.. maybe as a back up system of some sort. Just because they have one power source doesn't mean another isn't feasible but on an attack ship a large solar array might not be the best idea.

That's all besides the point.. that shit looks like a solar array.

Here is the picture of the ISS off wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:ISS_configuration_2011-05_en.svg

It calls the "mysterious" object in question a photovoltaic array.. which is another way of saying a motherfucking solar array. If you are trying to imply it's actually something else then say what you think it is, otherwise stfu.

Some of these are solar arrays and some are radiators.

Which is part of the solar array system's operation on the ISS.

I fail to see the reason for sperging over it this much. It'd make even less sense to have a giant radiator without a solar array sticking out of an attack ship.

"Look guize.. you can over heat my engines by shooting this giant fucking target sticking out the side of my ship". A secondary system (ie.. solar energy system) that might be easy to hit would make more sense.. but a primary cooling system would be a terrible idea. We could debate over whether the proposed "radiator" is a primary cooling or secondary cooling system but it'd be pointless. I doubt the games designers put that much thought into it to begin with. They probably saw something square shaped sticking out of a space craft they googled and thought "hey, that will make my ship look cool and space like also!"

So it's either bad attack space craft design or a solar array.

A radiator is fine to have.. I question the placement of the radiator like that.

I don't think a retractable radiator is a good idea, or rather a radiator that extends to that position. Maybe something that could extend and retract from a smaller position.. like near the rear of the ship. You know if you're attacking you don't want a stray bullet to run head on into a major propulsion component.

If it could extend and retract the radiator like a collapsible half sphere with a circle cut in the top where the engines would be mounted it might make sense.

Flunklesnarkin, in books like "Through Struggle, The Stars" there's quite detailed description on how a cooling system works. Basically, you have a lot of mass of a high thermal capacity material you can dump your heat into during the battle. The, after the battle, you spread out the radiators, circulate the coolant, etc. During the fight you keep your vulnerable bits like radiators retracted into armored sections. The books that try to go realistic route with regards to space battles (the one listed above, "Lost Fleet" series, "Forever War") usually mention that space battles would be a rather short affairs, with the shooting itself being handled by computers.

Both Pirx and Tichy approve of drooling on the nuclear pile to cool it off.

Makes sense.. although I could come up with better extension and retraction schemes than a couple of rectangles.

It'd be nice to have some option for semi protected radiator extension for extended battles, or at the very least trying to run away while under fire. Chases could last a long time and computers wouldn't be able to predict every relativistic scenario in real time.

Rectangle is simple. Like really bloody simple to machine. Inside the rectangles you would have coiling tubes for moving the coolant through, same as the back of your fridge. Rectangle is the same everywhere, so you can have the whole thing modular and just replace the bits that would get damaged. All interchangeable. Also, very easy to point in the right direction - you don't want your radiators to be facing each other, or the hull, as all heat is transferred by black body radiation.
If you would go for some fancier shape like circle, you would run into the issue of having several types of segments to deal with. Which sucks.

The only extended space chase I've read is in one of the Revelation Space books by Reynolds. Don't remember which one though. Also don't remember how cooling worked in that book. But more realistic scenario of a space battle is spotting an enemy ship from afar (no stealth in space, and a fusion torch is essentially a star), maybe some maneuvers, couple of seconds (tops) of win/die. Turning around costs terrible amounts of delta-v.

If, somehow, your battle battle was taking longer, and your heatsink would get too hot, you could always vent the stuff (though need to refill later somehow). There was some stuff about emergency cooling techniques mentioned on Atomic Rockets, don't remember the details though.

A new mail in the box..What could it be.. Gameplay elements, a star map with systems to explore and trade like a certain space sim in beta ? No of course not, another 90$ ship for sale!

A racer this time , it makes sense as the new arena 1V1 dogtfights are mostly hurling your ship as fast as you can towards the opponent and crash.

They put all that effort into making that video/model and ruin it with some super shitty DOF effects.
