Dungeons in this game are really dark. I can barely see shit even with the torchlight spell.

Of course Mummy sprang to life, recounted his life story on me and attacked. Unfortunately for him i am a somewhat experienced murderhobo.
Dropped a pretty a nice amulet that adds +1AC. No idea about any other effects on it because i am not paying the magic shoppe for identification. 625g for a single amulet is a robbery! :argh:

:shredder:

My pixie rogue managed to spring this trap at least twenty times. And every single time he managed to resist the effect of this "minion's curse"
deep6CD44QlBS9p.png

These resistances aren't for show i guess.

Choices and consequences i see.
My backpack was getting full so i decided to quickly run back to town for some unloading.

Not only there is a 500 gold fee to enter the fighter's guild but they also charge me extra 500 for the class promotion. Barbarian education is expensive.

For each of my guys the plan is as follows:
-Kabas just got his barbarian promotion quest. Going to promote him after i finish with the crypt. Barbarian gains an access to locks & traps skill but i am not going to invest in this as i wouldn't trust Kabas and his 2 intelligence with the party safety.
-Alura is training in the use of spears and shields, hope i am not screwing myself over by choosing this weapon. Going to make her a paladin and maybe a valkyrie later. Already found a +1 bra for her
deep6eaYWvpzT7Q.png

Things are looking good
-Ulfo is a classic elephant priest who trains into a monk. Heard it's a very effective combination once you solve the low Agi/Dex issue. Hope i am not screwing myself over by focusing on both spirit and vine magic instead of focusing on one spell school.
-I will aim to turn Ronvik into a bard. Not many games allow me to choose pixie as a race and he is surprisingly not as fragile as my previous ratman dude thanks to the dodge trait
-Olagas is a pure sun magic specialist. Quick to start blasting at a moments notice, will become a warlock obviously. I will definitely not going to forget to buy him some shoes and pants once we return to town.
-I was thinking about promoting Basil into a ranger at first but i am really not sold on bows in this game. Making him a hybrid vine magic/fighter would have been effective probably but i will instead aim for the samurai promotion just for the fun of it

How easy is to run this on Windows 10? GOG version works well?

There is no fancy widescreen but on Win10 it works just fine for me.

This was quite a funny fight. I accidentaly wasted my wizard's mana on a enemy that was immune to fire, thus i was forced on the ran from this nasty guy who appears to be quite resistant against convential weapons and likes to cast paralich on my martials.
It was like a comedy skit with a benny hill music until my Elf Wizard regained enough mana to finish him off with the flamedrop. Great spell.
deep6baVk0zyI4T.png

Here i admitted defeat and used walkthrough. There is no way in hell i would have guessed that the solution is to simply run through fire while holding a chest or something in front of you so that the gate won't close right in front of you. Quite fitting solution for a "path of warrior" puzzle tho, i admit.
Enjoying this game more than Wizardry 8 so far.

I'm pretty sure that's not the actual solution, just a more reliable way to proceed than solving the puzzle as intended.

Pros:
  • Simple yet fantastic gameplay - 3D 'Vania done right.
  • Ability to switch between "real" and "ethereal" world works damn fine through the entire game.
  • Top-tier voice acting.
  • Exploration never gets old.
  • Dat gothic feel.
  • Graphics steel look nice. "Remake" would need high-res textures and more polys, but that's about it.
Cons:
  • Fuckin' block puzzles, mang.
  • Final area drags on, forced FMVs don't help.
  • Combat gets trivial / boring at some point. It's faster to just avoid enemies, since you have 0 incentive for killing them.
  • No big-breasted bitches. BO >>> SR in this regard.
  • Story's supposed to be EPIC, yet you get a cliffhanger. And plot only gets weirder with next games.

tl;dr

Over 10 hours of oldschool fun.

Verdict: :5/5:

What are you laughing at?

Hey, I know this guy.

hexen15a.png

And this guy too!

hexen17a.png

And this guy I whacked dead just the other day!

Funny how D'Sparil was the only actual 'serpent rider' of the bunch.

hexen19a.png

"Siberian Weretigers"

Tfw you just open an atlas of exotic animals and look for something that hasn't had a 'were-' put in front of it yet.

(the game also features Snow Wereleopards)

Ah, a room with every single item in the game. Not at all suspicious!

hexen23a.png

I'm coming for you, asshole!

Whoever you even are!

hexen24a.png

Who IS this asshole anyway?

hexen26a.png

Whatever the answer, he means business.

hexen27a.png

You know the drill. Pop IDDQD, spam fireballs.

hexen28a.png

Unfortunately you can find only like two uses of IDDQD in the entire expansion pack, which is bad news once this guy starts knocking pillars over on yer 'ead.

very nice text legibility, fagets

And das it for Hexen 2. Portal of Praevus felt generally uninspired but overall inoffensive.

320x240, optionally 512x384 for Glide, is your friend. That's what these UIs were designed for. Resolution rescaling in Hexen II with dgVoodoo doesn't work so well, though, but nGlide might work.

Well, if you're playing this now, you really should go with the dgVoodoo option. Just set it to emulate the first Voodoo card, because Voodoo 2 supports MultiTexture which was added to the renderer in a later patch, which in turn causes the skies to look ugly. You can enable dithering (right-click in dgVoodoo's control panel to reveal more tabs) and a C.R.T. filter too; you might want to disable the Glide Gamma Ramp, which might make the gamma how it was on the original card. Run the game with the 3dfx Glide renderer, in 16-bit colour mode, and 512x384 resolution. If you set the wrapper to scale it up to your native resolution (the Max value for Resolution in the Glide tab), you'll get a high resolution for the 3-D graphics and scaled up UI.

If you nevertheless choose to use one of the unofficial renderers, use OpenGL or one of the newer Direct3D ones from the Old Unreal patch and disable MultiTexture and OneXBlending in advanced settings (type preferences in the console and change it in the settings for the appropriate renderer). Doing that is essential to getting the game to look how it's supposed to.

I don't have any screenshots of Unreal at hand, but here's Deus Ex, which is on the same engine, in the Glide mode with scaled up UI and dithering:

As someone who played these games at release, I can tell at a glance that this isn't how they looked, and the dithering is downright an eyesore.

Also frankly I don't at all care about squeezing all the graphics juices out of games that are 25 years old.

Yes, the dithering is excessive compared to to what it was like on the real hardware, though I like the texture it gives to these kinds of graphics. Hence it's an option. What is important are the MultiTexture problem and UI scaling. The former especially.

And don't misunderstand, I'm quite opposed to adding any ‘improvements’ to old games' graphics. I'm only interested in a reasonably decent approximation of their original presentation.
