Completed Pirate Doom. It was great.
Incredible amount of work that must have vent into making all the Doom sprites and sounds fit the pirate theme. I especially adore the sounds Imp's throwing knifes make when they hit the wall or how revenants deliver their "homing missiles" by using parrots.
Some creative levels too. Apart from that Circus! map my other favourite ones are Barnacle Bar, Port Royale and House of Mojo. Booty Bay that has you robbing the bank is memorable too.
Most of the weapons are not just simple reskins of the Doom 2 ones. Your basic pistol has more punch here and you can swing your cutlass with it for some proper pirate action, can do the same with a suprer shotgun. You get dual pistols as an upgrade to your basic pistol that fills the usual role of the chaingun and a new chaingun that has a longer windup but fires even faster. Your rocket launcher and plasma gun analogues(cannon and auto-cannon) now share ammo and their projectiles don't fire in a straight line. BFG is replaced with dynamite and dynamite launcher that can fire three bundles at once.
I can see now why you often see Pirate Doom gets recommended when someone asks for a list of good TCs.

Looks pretty damn impressive.
I think i found something that looks equally impressing.
Treasure tech gameplay mod and the demo WAD based on it called Treasure Tech Land.

Treasure Tech is a mod that claims to be inspired by Wario Land 4. Funnily enough i actually played that one on a gameboy advance a long time ago, barely remember anything about it.
Your melee options are quite beefed out here. You can jump and ground slam enemies, charge and body tackle them or even grab and throw them.
The weapons are also ridiculosly beefy here. Your basic but very huge pistol sends imps and pinkies flying and your shotgun can supercharge for some big explosions. My favourite weapons are the HORNET SM-BEE that sends homing bees and POP ROCK launcher that bonks your enemies with a bomb that explodes after a few seconds. You have very limited ammo carrying capacity though, to compensate for their power and you melee strength i guess.
The levels themselves are focused on exploring and collecting treasure with a bit of platforming here and there. Treasure can be spent in a shop(accessible at any time) on uprgades like getting the ability to grab mancubi or increasing your ammo capacity. Your goal is to reach a frog that will trigger a countdown during which you must run back towards the exit while trying to grab some extra treasure that have just opened, exactly like Wario Land 4.
I liked this one a lot but the demo has only like two levels + 1 secret one and a tutorial level that comes with the base gameplay mod. The last update appears to be 3 years ago though the dev is still active on twitter. Not expecting the full story WAD designed around this arsenal any time soon but the gameplay core is already here, can be used in some other WAD.

Treasure tech land was short so i tried another TC that is on my list. GMOTA, aka Go Medieval On Their Ass.
Dev suggested a few WADs to use it on like SCYTHE1/2 or The Brotherhood of Ruin, decided to go with the Brotherhood. Doing pistol start just like i did with the pirate Doom.

The third character is currently being reworked as i understand it

This Lord Blaz character turns the game into an almost first-person beat'm'up. Technically you only have two weapons - dagger throw and stunning blazter. You also have your basic sword that can be charged for extra strength or thrown so that you can switch into the fist mode. You also have chain that can pull certain enemies from far away to you.
Instead of picking up new weapons you pickup upgrades that make you stronger or alter the way your attacks work. Like giving your blazter a triple shot or making you rapid fire a bunch of frost daggers.
Pretty fun expect for that enemy that has a centaur shield from Hexen. Didn't try to play as the Doomslayer yet.

Now for something more beautiful again, some time ago i also remembered that i left a few Quake maps unfinished aside from Brutalism jam. Returned to Dwell for a bit.

d1m320240314170428.png

These egyptian temples reminded me of Serious Sam and funnilly enough Dwell borrows a few elements from it. Headless kamikaze caught me offguard.
Not a big fan of quad shotgun, arcane dimension Widowmaker is a lot more fun to use. Dual axe powerup is pretty fun on the other hand.
It's pretty good but i am again experiencing a slight burnout with Quake. Will need a break before continuing.

My favourite part of these Doom wads is identifying what other games the assets were lifted from. I laffed at the Rayman 2 pirate flag in Pirate Doom.

My final batch of Robocop screenshots. Had an absolute blast with the game from start to finish.

Took a Doomslayer from that GMOTA mod for a spin.
gzdoomGl2eKSVxTc.png
gzdoomFZBbvm39hT.png

He is not as fun to play as Blaz. His idea is that he needs to melee enemies with his sword in order to get ammo for your more convential Doom weapons.
Despite being able to swing his sword at any time by pressing altfire Doomslayer sucks at melee compared to Blaz so to compensate for this he can do a single stun shot and a lifestealing dagger throw - both are cooldown abilities. Meh.
I only liked basic shotgun replacement amongst his arsenal of weapons.
Also, absolutely loathe wyverns that replace cacodemons in this conversion.
gzdoomhg8VDlF7GY.png

They and those Hexen shield dudes are way too annoying to fight, especially as the Doomslayer.
Author is pretty active(same as the one who made Combined Arms mods that i am interested in trying out too) and promised reworks in the near future for all the characters including the third one that is currently unavailable. Will put GMOTA on hold until then.

Getting tired of brown colours and stuff. One steam demo caught my eye.
Snap the Sentinel.

It's another one of those GZDoom commercial games but with a very early sonic 3D inspired look.
Only one gun that can rapid fire 7 bullets + ability to kick things. Can find limited ammo upgrades that make your gun fire spreading bullets, homing blasts or mini-artillery and stuff.
Something tells me that this game is designed around you attempting to speedrun the levels but the gameplay didn't grab me. Adore the visuals though.

I found Dwell to be a consistently high difficulty map pack, especially in later levels it really ramps up. Keeps you on your toes constantly.

Didn't like the penultimate level that much, it was a bit too long. Still beautiful though.
Final level on the other hand i liked. It felt short but intense.
start20240318133043.png

Now only second episode and some secret hub levels remain to be beaten.
Edit: The game is Dwell btw.

I also started playing another pretty beautiful Doom 2 TC. Godless Night.
gzdoomGASaetrP5P.png
gzdoomts5dQgsnoN.png

Inspired by Castelvania somewhat but not in the same way like that other Castelvania TC mod.
The main focus here is the so called supercharge mod that changes yours weapons/enemies and also completely removes random damage numbers. Not yet completely used to reloading but i do absolutely love the feeling of impact and how your weapons sound. You got some new enemies too like the grenadier or the posionous pain elemental variant who thankfully doesn't summon lost souls.
Playing on the "Tough" difficulty that the game claims is like Speed of Doom and SCYTHE 2 - both WADs i didn't play yet. The levels while fairly large are surprisingly not 'that' large actually, they're very jumpacked with action and some tricky encounters. This difficulty is kicking my ass but i am having fun.
