I'm more confused as thematically it seems to have nothing to do with the in-game concept of the Purity doctrine.
They said Purity favors huge and massive units with lots of firepower and their most favorite weapon is giant floating platforms with giant guns.

I'm sure they could do giant floating plataforms with giant guns using only the power of SCIENCE!
They could also just call it Elerium damnit, they got the trademark and all.

Guess being anywhere near Alpha Centauri story/setting wise is out of the window at this point. Now to see if its anything more than a CiV5 reskin (it wont be).

If you want to play SMAC with more modern graphics and mechanics, play Planetfall mod/Conflict in Chiron.

/thread.
no, just no. planetfall is a farce, chock full of bugs, with not even half the features of smac. it's just a mod inspired to and which reuses assets. it has absolutely nothing else in common with alpha centauri.

Unlike some old games, SMAC pretty much runs right out the box, I can't imagine why you'd play anything else if you've got the itch.

I tried Planetfall but honestly it felt like a mod (which it is). Lots of unfitting assets, the linearity of the techtree from Civ... nothing like SMAC really. I didn't know about Conflict in Chiron: I'll look it up even though I fear it'll have similar issues...

I agree of course, but it IS an old game with an old UI and I've been craving for a proper sequel for years. Which won't come, I know.

The GOG version does. If you're installing from the CD then you need to track down an XP patch and make a few .ini tweaks.

Conflict on Chiron is really good and probably the most polished mod for Civ4. The latest version makes the Mass Effect factions (ahem..) optional.

Is the latest version in English? Aparently Monaldinho stopped developing in the CivFanatics forum, and I am not going to register on Civ.de.
BTW, I feel like a heel, I promised him I would get him some unit descriptions done but my HD went haywire, I now have the HD again but I haven't delivered the descriptions.
Pretty sure he stopped development period. The same version on the Civ.de is also on the CivFanatics forum. I believe even the aliens were fully fleshed out, so there's not much else to work on.

Art Lead Mike Bates and Co-Lead Designers Will Miller and David McDonough explain more about the Purity Affinity in this Q&A.

What are the defining aspects of this Affinity?

Purity is focused on preserving, glorifying, and creating the ideal version of humanity as we know it now. If Harmony and Supremacy represent the changes humankind will face in the future, Purity is a total rejection of that adaptation. The look of the cities and units call back to the past, and feature lots of banners and sigils you would commonly see on the great civilizations of old. Purity units have no adaptations to the alien atmosphere and instead rely on big bulky sophisticated exosuits and vehicles.

What geological, technological, or other benefits does this Affinity have over others?

Purity is about raw strength, but don’t confuse that with simplicity. While military units are equipped with heavy battlesuits, many of their vehicles are equipped with hover technology. Floating tanks look more like floating fortresses. They move slowly, but they don’t suffer from the same environmental move penalties of a typical ground unit. Your enemy will not see a more terrifying sight than an army of floating tanks crossing the ocean.

When designing the look for this Affinity, what served as inspiration?

Mike Bates - We looked at a lot of images from our modern military when designing the units for Purity. We were able to use this pretty effectively for Purity because the tan and dirt-like colors emphasize the Affinity’s attachment to Earth. We mixed this up with the pageantry and regalia of medieval knights and other classic types of warriors. The units ended up being a great combination of the past and present of humanity, which falls right into place with Purity’s beliefs.

What would a person aligned with this Affinity say to someone aligned with the others?

“Get off my lawn.”

Actually, I can't care less how the game will look. SMAC was ugly as hell with leader pictures and secret project movies as the only bright side. What matters for me is how they will handle diplomacy, UI, combat and overall game mechanics.

Wtf is with all the faggots complaing about imaginary problems in SMAC recently ?

The only thing that looks mech in SMAC ( but not offensively bad ) are units, while everything else is beautifull and atmospheric. It's one of the best looking s-f themed 4x games ever.

Interface is great, the only important difference to modern civ games is, that you have possible action buttons icons contextually displayed, while in SMAC they are hidden in a menu where impossible actions are greyed out.
So if you forget some rarely used key shortcut, it is one more click away and it is a bit less welcomming for a new player, that don't know yet what different kinds of units can and cannot do.
That's about it, nonissue once you are familiar with the game. On the other hand graphics are a lot more readable, than in modern 4x games, where overstylised UIs and awesum graphics, often lead to incomprehensible mess.
