I wonder how they will blame piracy on this one?
They'll blame the evil trolls from the internet, of course (and in fact, they already do).
Only those two reasons destroy game sales.

Mostly i don't like anyone to fail, it's kinda sad. But in this case i have a smile of little satisfaction on my smug face. Corporate assholes need to finally learn, that there can only be one. All you can do in mmo market is to find some profitable niche. If that's not what you want - GTFO and do something else.
I mean it's not like Blizzard even will let someone kick them out. By the time it gets somewhat dangerous, they'll just release WoW II or something. With all the cash they got, i would not be surprised if they already have something in the making.

Since 2007 actually.

Why are there two TOR threads?
this isn't GRPGD where threads move fast and "take space".
the threads have some distinctions in the opening posts. this one about TOR vs WOW. the other one was supposed to more of a General TOR discussion thread.

That's easy. Other games are easily pirated so gamers are busy playing them instead of TOR. Games like TOR will never receive the attention they deserve unless every game ever is protected from piracy 100%.

Considering most of them end up going f2p before they're even released... no it's not a record time.

Anyway, I'm surprised they're giving up on it so early. I'm still having fun with it and it seems like its doing fine after the server mergers. Giving a "f2p option" is pretty much saying we're not serious about this MMO anymore. Too bad.

"There has been some decline in our subscriber numbers, but I wouldn't say that's what's driving the decision...what's happened in the marketplace is that free-to-play has really become the market standard for MMOs

Of course it hasn't anything to do with the declining subscriber base,it has to do with the new industry norm which apparently became the standard in the past 6 months and wasn't the standard when the game was launched....

Depending on how badly they cripple it (Which I bet they're gonna mangle it. It's EA and Bioware) I'd download it again to keep playing with my buddybro I guess.
The phrasing of "Free-To-Play - The first 50 levels will be Free-to-Play, with restrictions on access to new content and advanced player features. Some restrictions can be "unlocked" with Cartel Coins." sounds promising, but they'll probably consider things like "Having an inventory" and "Gaining talent points" advanced player features. If they honestly do let you play 1-50 for free without crippling you that'd be impressive.

lvl 1-50? What % of that game is that? Is this enough to get past the storyline or is this a tutorial area trial?

I think both of us should post a smugface now.

Indeed. What's really happened is that everyone is being forced to face the fact that you can't kill WoW at its own game, and that you're most likely going to make a lot more buck with a good F2P format then by using subs (this having been clear for a year now, EA just went LALALA about it and thought they could kill WoW by shoveling enough money at it).

Pff, they're stealing the Freemium model LotRO is using. From all the shitty Freemiums, they chose the worst and aren't even seemingly adding a way to farm in-game currency to unlock shit "for free". Awesome EA is awesome.

Also, people I saved from buying this awesome game sure will be glad my F2P estimates were right. Gloat-time!

That's the entire game at this point in time. Maybe they'll block end game raiding, but seriously fuck end game raiding.
No, they'll block the new "expansion" that raises the lvl cap (http://www.swtor.com/info/news/news-article/20120604). New F2P standard right there !
I didn't even realize they were raising the level cap. Haven't been paying attention to TOR, likely wouldn't have even noticed this today if my TOR-playing buddybro hadn't told me on Steam.
Alright then, 1-50 is MOST of the game!

wow, so they are basically admitting that it's the next FFXIV?

Will be interesting to see what these F2P restrictions are.

Probably not being able to increase inventory beyond the starting size, cap on the amount of credits you can have, stuff like that.

I'm too lazy to read that article - does the expansion also continues the class storylines?

They got Absolutely buttfucked in the MMO marketplace, at a time when wow content has been trickling out at its slowest rate as well.

God awful freemium model they chose as well, people will play the story shit and say sayonara.

I agree with this. There are hardly any raiding guilds out there. Players are more interested in finishing their story quests and making alts.
