When marketing starts to decide what products to create vs marketing selling the products. It's a common shift in companies the past 2 decades, plenty of business literature that tries to sell the concept to you. That’s what happens when your staff is comprised of non-gamers. Same issue with Obsidian.
I read 'The Purple Cow', and several others, back in my college days as it goes to length into this subject. It's a short book, incase you're looking for a good laugh and see many of the modern world's problems gleefully being sold to you as a good thing. My professor had a good chuckle when I pointed out the problems with this philosophy during the verbal defense of my dissertation about it. Despite the obvious issues, it's going to stay this way until someone finds an easier formula for the unskilled, unlucky or unimaginative to squize the money out of people.
