Who would have thought that System Shock 3 from Warren Spector could be such a miserable prospect

Warren Spector hasn't made a game worth playing in 20 years and was not the main and only factor that made DX1 what it is, so I for one could easily imagine SS3 under him being a mess.

From whom? I doubt it's going to create enough interest to convince any given publisher to change their mind if they're already not interested in what they've seen.

They should just use the Newdark engine for system shock 3, instead of creating everything from scratch with the Unity engine. Or just do a single fan mission for SS2. But I doubt they are able to do even a simple SS2 FM.

Why release a teaser for something that will never happen?

They are still working on it instead of closing the studio. Continuing development just to show it to more potential publishers doesn't make any sense at this point.

By now, they know they won't find a publisher, so I believe they have decided that they are in fact going to try self-publish it.

It is probably going to be a mess, just like UA. A half-finished, watered-down crap SS3. But they are probably going to publish something at some point.

Colors and lighting trying pretty hard to create a Bioshock vibe, but that's to be expected, it seems like every new Shock-like venture will be colored by Bioshock's influence in some way (muh Neo Deco)

Looks like it was supposed to be IGN exclusive thing: https://www.ign.com/articles/2019/09/11/system-shock-3-watch-the-new-gameplay-trailer

They apparently also got a brief description about the game:

System Shock 3 is a first-person action game in which you are free to play and explore how you want. You can be a hacker, a stealth specialist, a melee master, etc. as you uncover the mysteries of the space ship that's been taken over by the evil AI, SHODAN.

This may sound weird, but I find it interesting that the melee weapon is a wrench and not a lead pipe.

Also, where are the psionic abilities? This is supposed to be a sequel, not a prequel, right? Is there some kind of lore that I'm not aware of?

Trailer says it's 2085, which is 29 years before SS2's event. So this might be a interquel or something. That brings many more questions though. (Is this another SHODAN than SS2 SHODAN?)

Doesn't look bad, but it really doesn't impress either. Considering that they claimed to be more than half completed back in February, you would hope to see a better gameplay trailer that highlights player systems and abilities, or a better, more cinematic story trailer. I don't automatically assume that it's it going to be a pile of shit since Underworld Ascendant was (Spector put out Deus Ex and Tom Hall did Anachronox at the same time that John Romero fucked up Daikatana over at Ion Storm), but there's nothing here that really addresses the concerns that fans of the first two games have. By contrast, here's a gameplay trailer for Prey, which was a worthy successor to the System Shock legacy:

Much more cinematic and it shows how player items and abilities can be used to progress through the game.

I'm not really interested in running around shooting monsters and zombies. System Shock had a bit of that on occasion to remind you that you are in actual danger, but mostly it was about exploring the station, flicking switches, solving puzzles, etc. Like a psychological thriller more than a monsters-in-ur-face horror. I didn't play Prey because it looks like the latter, but this SS3 trailer looks a bit more like the latter too. It could just be for the trailer though, but I hope they remember that running around shooting monsters has been done 1000 times already.
