Were you around in the late 90's and early 2000's to experience the greatness that was quake 2 multiplayer? It was easily the most popular and funnest FPS online until UT and CounterStrike came along. Unfortunately Mplayer was becoming too popular for it's own good being 100% free to use along with streaming, camwhoring and other garbage and it was eventually bought out by Gamespy in 2001 and went to shit. Quake 3 was alright but i didn't like it as much, by that time i was already burnt out from playing too much Quake 2 and even more so Counter Strike.

Anyways, i'm not looking to argue with you bro, like i said in my previous post: Rocket Arena and 20vs20 CTF was by far the most fun i ever had in any online shooter and took some degree of skill to play at a high level, if you were there to experience it yourself than you would have a better understanding of where i'm coming from. 1997-2003 to me was one of the best era's of online shooters esp if you were 13 to 17 years old at the time.

I stuck with Quake 1 multiplayer (Threewave CTF) for as long as possible, because I loved it from the start. Great level design, grappling hook was a huge part of the appeal as well. Yes, Quake 2 multi was very popular. I didn't like it much though and jumped to UT and Tribes.

Tribes was fucking amazing, i can't believe i almost forgot about that game. Never learned how to properly Ski though. I can go on and on about the greatness of Tribes but that would be boring. I dabbled in Tribes: Vengeance for a bit but forgot my user name and password and that was the end of that, but it didn't matter cause WoW was out by then anyway, and that fucking game went on to rob me 3 years of my life.

Do you still play Quake, UT or Tribes anymore?

Seriously, all those games suck. Shooters died years ago.
Agreed. The FPS genre has nothing to offer anymore, everything that's been done has been done to death 15-20 years ago, the genre died in 2003. It's just rehash after rehash etc... Don't people get sick of the same shit year after year? Once you've seen 2-3 of them you've seem them all.

Actually I think it was with Quake 2 when I realized shooters were more or less dead. It was't the 3d because Quake was fucking great.

Pretty much. Quake 3 was really popular for a brief time, it was actually p. decent but it just wan't as fun as Quake 1/2. Counter Strike breathed fresh air into the genre but it just gets banal after so many rounds.

Quake 3 was anything but fun. I did play it a lot online but the fun I had was because of my bros. The game itself was very dull.
CS was when everything really went to shit (again) and everyone focused on competitive faggotry instead of fun.

CS competitive faggotry is what made it fun. Don't you like to compete? Whats the matter? Don't you miss getting AWP'd head shot in the de_dust bridge underpass and tunnel and de_office and...every other fucking map (yea that shit pissed me off too). More than 10 years since i touched CS and the map names are still burned into my fucking retna.

But anyways yea, to each his own. For me, online FPS peaked with Quake 2, Tribes and UT, ever since then it's been nothing but :decline: There is just nothing more you can really do with the genre. But it still sells, that's the 12-22 year old demographic for you. It's just a wash/rinse repeat cycle that will never end.

I remember having fun with the Jailbreak mod for Q2. This was despite having gAyOL for internet and only one telephone line. Jesus that shit was a nightmare.

Preach it to the choir. Also used AOL and good ole' 56k modem. "DAMNIT MA PUT DOWN THE PHONE YOU JUST GOT ME KILLED". Those were the days lmao. I went through a move last year and found a whole bunch of AOL 50 hour free trial cd's still in the plastic dated 1995 in perfect condition.
Jailbreak mod for Q2
I don't remember that mod but it does sound kinda familiar.

I co-founded a UT2004 clan, which was a mess.

Then I was heavily into Quake Wars and Tribes: Ascend. Now Quake Wars is dead, and Tribes: Ascend's "quirks" are exploited by remaining players too much, it's a buggy broken game with nonexistent netcode.

There's a project called "Midair" however which aims to recreate old-school Tribes.

I just remembered having to use an anti-idle program to prevent it from logging off automatically.

It was a variation on CTF.

Jailbreak is a great game type and was also very popular on UT99. It's a shame we don't see Jailbreak modes more often.

I've just realized that the new Doom is just a corridor shooter that masquerades as an arena shooter. The path you take when running from one enemy to another enemy to another enemy could easily be straighten out into a corridor (maybe with some obstacles dropped here and there) and it wouldn't take that much away from the general feel of the gameplay.

After Quake 2 you had:
  • Unreal
  • UT
  • Half-Life
  • SiN
  • Red Faction
  • STALKERs
  • A whole bunch of lesser, but solid shooters
  • A few excellent hybrids (Deus Ex, System Shock 2, DX:HR, Dishonored)
  • Milsims
So, yeah, no.

From that list the only truly good games are the Unreals,Stalkers, DE1 and SS2.
MilSims are ok if you want to join the military but you're too much of a pussy to actually do it, I guess.

Quake 2 with first expansion pack is a pinnacle of fps gaming.

For me genre died with RtCW - the last great, classic shooter.
Haven't played the expansions but vanilla Q2 was just mediocre through and through.

Skyrim is far better RPG than Q2 was FPS and I'm talking vanilla here.
Better FPS too, come to think of it.

RTCW was kind of meh too.

There's must but some sad/hilarious story connected with you and Q2 in the past that could explain dat prejudice.

The Reckoning is most avesum mission pack ever made, better even than Scourge of Armagon, Dissolution of Eternity and Opposing Force combined.

Thanks for the link. Looks pretty good, first thing i was looking for was skiing and it's def there, will keep an eye on this.
STALKER games are great esp when modded. MISERY is one of the best mods i ever played but i prefer Autumn Aurora/Shadows of Chernobyl.
Dishonored
Dishonored is awful, i don't know how people can like this game. The character models look stupid and the gameplay was way more arcade than i was expecting, it felt too much like other Bethesda games and that's a no no.
vanilla Q2 was just mediocre
Single player was medicore yes but Q2 multiplayer is a completely diferent story. Few FPS's can match what Q2 brought to the table. Have you ever played Q2 multiplayer?

The fuck did i just read.
