It's a good example of how to convert a gamebook to the PC. I got it this evening and spent an hour or two playing around, it's a lot of fun. I didn't see a save function, though, which is odd... if I quit, will it just allow me to continue from where I left off?

Keep in mind, it really is a gamebook conversion. It's definitely not as complicated or detailed as a regular PC game. The combat has just enough complexity to stay interesting, though; it's not purely dice-roll based.

Talespire looks really promising, I wish there were more good quality, user-friendly game creation tools out there.

I just picked this up as well. Never played gamebooks buy I do love CYOA aspects of Darklands and KoDP so should be good. Have to support this type of development.

Make the Codex Great Again!
While a few of their gamebooks are sub-par in quality, in general Tin Man Games' products are :obviously:. Their gamebooks make for good entertainment when on public transportation - Cleve should check them out for those 12-hour commutes.

Would be nice to have some of their devs jump in on the conversation here. Maybe Jewbro or Bee can drop them a tweet?

Charming presentation. I imagine these are children's books? I am finding things piss easy.

I figured for the first play-through I would use the simpleton slap chop. Also taking the left most passages always. Let's see where that leads.

I am missing out on some potentially significant clues or items because he is illiterate.

Nex one I will go with the other extreme.

I used the crossbow/sword guy who has "keen sight". So far that ability has enabled me to avoid a lot of traps.

Has anyone failed any comparative skill checks yet (when you and a monster both attack each other). I have had maybe 25 of those so far and I have failed none.

I'm digging this game. Nice pacing, atmosphere, and story. Certainly satisfied!

Yes, I've definitely failed those checks. Monsters like the Slime Beast in the prison cell have a higher attack skill than your character.

I got my ass handed to be by a giant sand worm. Several of those checks I failed in that fight. I died to it and had to use a surge token. Difficulty just took a nice upswing.

Also happy to report that the confined caves of the trailer are far from the only environments. Some areas are much larger. Also worth noting that combat happens not on the adventure map, you are warped to a battlefield with area representative makeup. The grid scales out to larger sizes.

Looks a lot better than their previous titles. Helps a lot to flesh things out presentation-wise versus a straight up book.

It's pretty okay, but I'm not sure that I like it or think it's worth the money. It's barely an RPG, but its fine for what it is. Feels like a roguelike
Wait, how is this game barely an RPG? all you do here is roleplay.

More of a CYOA with a few dice rolls based on my three hours.

My Samurai guy died three times in the same general area. I will have to take the next play-through more seriously. Steamrolling everything for the first hour caused me to underestimate some fights.

Gamebooks were created as a combination of Choose Your Own Adventure books and RPGs (though some use the term more expansively to include CYOA books themselves, which blurs the two concepts). Relative to RPGs proper, Gamebooks are light on RPG mechanics and constrict the player's freedom to explore and approach things in different ways.

Of course, this still means Gamebooks are closer to being RPGs than many videogames bearing the label RPG today. :M

I usually only buy discounted games, but I'll make an exception for this because I want to support the developer so I can have a city of thieves and deathtrap dungeon conversions.

This one looks great, even better than the sorcery! Conversions

Hi everyone! This is Neil from Tin Man Games here, one of the devs behind The Warlock of Firetop Mountain.

@swortionery on here tweeted at me about this discussion, so I thought I would create a profile and jump on! I just want to say thanks for all your kind words - it means a lot! If you have any questions, feel free to ping me. We're hard at work on some bug fixes and other updates, so if I'm a little slow in replying, you'll understand why. ;)

May your STAMINA never fail!
