Judging by their stretch goals they do seem to have expected more, but raising 600k is nothing to scoff at.

I'm really interested to see how these guys do, and although my expectations are extremely low, I'll be pleasantly surprised if they are successful.

Can't expect too high in times of inflation, shrinkflation, and nasty cost of living expenses. Maybe some people just say fuck it and toss everything they can but others hold back and people have been burned bad by crowdfunding. They'll hold off to buy the end result if possible.

Pretty good for such a dubious project. I hope they can channel some of that oldBethesda retard energy, or failing that at least crash and burn entertainingly. Though I have to say it's already been a top notch trainwreck so far.

Far too much for what little they've actually shown and how they conducted themselves throughout the campaign. If they manage to cobble that early access release together, great. I don't even care if the full game releases. The 140sqkm island would be enough for me to enjoy.

There's a big difference between paying for a prototype to be developed when I doubt it'll ever exist and buying the early access title (which comes with a refund policy). The early access build is the pitch they're taking to the publishers to get millions in funding. It's the longest of long shots.

If it ever exists, I'll give it a playthrough and frankly I don't care if anything past the early access build ever comes out. 140km landmass is huge.
Sad that they didn't reach any of their stretch goals, but I'm keeping an eye out for this game in any case.
Aren't the stretch goals coming regardless of reaching them or not? I was under the impression multiplayer was guaranteed, the stretch goal was just going to accelerate development on it so it'd be in for early access.

What are the odds of them running off with the money and blowing it on coke and hookers?

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
So, doing the back-of-the-napkin calculations and considering the development costs in the US for a team of about 40 people (according to their statements), how long can a figure of $700K (from which to subtract taxes, KS fees, and everything else) allow the studio to operate? Theoretically, only a few months at most, which seems like too little time to put together even just a "vertical slice" that can pique the interest of some major publisher, and second-tier publishers cannot guarantee the investments needed for such an ambitious project. Well, we'll see how it goes, the beginning doesn't give much hope...

After careful study of their campaign, the history of Kickstarter, and the not-facts I've pulled from my ass, I calculate the probability of this being a scam as roughly 354% with a margin of error of 2%. At least someone will get a great time out of the funds though.

Start: $702,960
Kickstarter & Square Fees: ($70,296)
Federal Corporate Taxes: ($215,105) This assumes highest marginal corporate rate
Backer Rewards: ($10,000) Random guess. No idea.
Remaining: $407,559

That's not a lot of money left over. Not in the USA at least. Their overhead is likely very small, assuming the continue using their existing software licenses and hardware and don't lease an office...$25,000 in overhead annually, excluding wages. Assuming 3 years to develop something functionally complete, or EA eligible...They've got $110,853 each of those years to spend. This assumes no extraordinary legal fees and that nobody in the outfit draws any kind of wages or salary. A quick look shows a senior dev team of four people. Three if you exclude the composer. If they want to be successful, they'll need to outsource as much as possible to non-western dev farms. South America has been a rising star in this field. Seems doable if they stay dedicated. I'm just skeptical that none of them will wet their beak.

You can absolutely make a stunning, massive open world (especially since it's procedural) game on UE5 for $400k.

Doesn't mean that'll be the case here. Also keep in mind the kickstarter goal was to fund 1 year of dev so they can shop for a publisher.

My pet peeve is devs always needing 100 million dollars to build the smallest, shittiest VN excuse of a game there is.

I'm expecting basically daggerfall 1.75

More complexity/ visual variety, but otherwise the same skeleton underneath

But that'll be enough really

No game replicates the daggerfall experience
