This is exactly why they will do it, and will definitely even address it in-game.

A strong woman breaks free from conformity and economical, traditional, or gendered roles and is strong because of it. The girlboss archetype necessitates that the girl be opposed to any roles men would want her to have. It will be brought up that she could be queen of the whole continent if she wanted to and she'd be the best queen ever, but saving the village girls is more important for her so that's what she'll do instead.

Let's just come out and say it – the witchers are victims. They were snatched from their homes as children and Frankensteined by desperate people to combat a savage land. We don't know the circumstances behind Ciri's change, but if she undertook the procedure willingly? It would be such a slap in the face to handwave away the trauma and agree to be violated in exchange for weak superpowers. That's like seeing someone at the supermarket in a mobility trolley and wishing your own legs were broken so you'll get to ride around in one too. You already have a far superior power (walking!) just like Ciri is far above a witcher's power.

All this is to say that maybe breaking into male-dominated spaces shouldn't include the victims of barbaric experiments. It's not something to aspire to.

The books suffer from the same issue as George R.R Martin's work - they should have ended after a specific point rather than ramble on endlessly.

Worse yet, the publishing industry is brutal - there's a lot of pressure to try and force rewrites in order to make every setting more 'diverse' which is why so many fantasy works suddenly pivot towards focusing on women. Even the so called 'based' anime industry is prone to the same problem on that front, usually with the added weirdness of hyper focusing on romances between characters even when there's paper thin justification for such.

This sounds logical and all, but it goes against the theme park design that all fantasy and sci-fi settings must adhere to. Ciri was going to be the protagonist, and a Witcher game must have witchers, a witcher protagonist to be precise, thus Ciri "must be" a witcheress. If Ciri weren't a witcheress then the game could hardly be named Witcher 4 now, could it? And that would be terrible. The game would be named something like Elder Blood, and the suits would be worried about mushy brain gamers not knowing that this is a game set in the world of Witcher or worse thinking that it belongs to another franchise.

As for the game, I pretty much gave up on the series after the first game. For the second one, they copied the Bamham combat without really understanding it or why it worked specifically in that game. The game was heavily consolized, both in UI and gameplay. I'll give them credit for having a middle chapter that differed a lot depending on who you sided with, but aside from that I found the game disappointing. The first one had its flaws, but there was a lot of charm too. I have an easier time excusing a flawed first attempt with a lot of soul, than a second attempt with deliberate decline. The third one seemed to be more of the second. And this one will presumably be even more of the same, with worse writing.

It is a spectrum, specific to time, place and circumstances. To the people in the 1966, Star Trek must have been woke as hell.

When Sapkowski's contract prevented him from stating overly negative opinions about Netflix series or CDPR games, he decided to never watch or play any of them. When asked by CDPR about specific aspects of the world design during Witcher 1 development, his answer was so hostile and condescending, that it ended up in the game as memorable villian quote.

The problem will correct itself given enough time, at any rate. Progressives always push too hard and too far to the point where those who barely tolerate their nonsense in the first place inevitably step up and push society to pivot in the opposite direction again. We're arguably seeing that happen to an extent already. A lot of the pure slop is being outright rejected and if and when progressives start actively acting on their threats it may very well spook the smarter executives into stepping away from pandering to them.

For example look at the shooter who took out the CEO recently. He's being actively celebrated by many progressives. If there's one thing that worries the super wealthy it is the idea of dysgenic, bitter freaks harming them. There isn't really any more room to double down and pander to them even harder at this point as the dregs in the barrel have already been scraped out. It's also entirely possible that progressives will be the scapegoat for the upcoming financial devastation and exploited to take the blame. That'll be satisfying, if so even if it is obvious that they're not solely to blame.

I suspect we'll start seeing a shift back to 'subtle' subversion, but even that won't work as well as it did in the past as pattern recognition has been developed by many gamers at this point and they know exactly what to look for and avoid.
