Black Mage Sion is good but later on, at least on the highest difficulty and challenge mode, battle mage is just straight up bonkers. Which is incidentally why I think that post has merit. In Melee, Irene and Sion just kick Albus' ass in every way.

If you don't know what they mean by Albus' squishyness, you simply haven't read their abilities. Odds are, you have Albus in better gear (i.e. more dodge chance) than Irene and Sion. If you look only at their masteries, Sion and Irene get a TON of damage reduction and defense, where Albus doesn't get all that much.

Albus defense comes from blocking, not dodging. He also has a far more aggressive fighting style. GS masteries provide bonuses to block whenever Albus attacks.

Blocking and damage reduction is exactly where BM wins. Albue’ circumstancial bonuses can’t keep up - especially if you try to fit in Forestallment.

read the last 10 pages or so. Some people say yes - a fact that will never fail to amaze me. It is among the worst stories I can recall sufflering through. Not that it matters in the slightest - you play this one for the gameplay

I do not think anyone thinks that they story is "good". Most think it is servicable. What was praised were the drawings during the virutal novel style presentation and some of the underlying ideas like Spoonism.

okay I will

To put it simply, spoonism is an idea of a better society. Life in Valhalla sucks, so people search for someplace where they will be treated like people.

Since this game infected me with a healthy dose of passion (or an unhealthy dose of autism), in one of my playthroughs, I wrote down the truth of the spoonism. Let me share them with you.

'Never be full with the first spoon'. In spoonism, first spoon is an intention, second spoon is the result. Don't be satisfied with intention, aim for the result. When spoonist refer to people as 'first spoon', they mean the group that created the opportunity for them to gather. The second spoon are those people who will reach 'land of feast' (build korean communism).

'Your spoon may be different from mine, but we share the same bowl'. It is a beautiful way to say 'respectfully disagree'.

'Don't seek truths hidden behind masks'. Your past doesn't matter, we will treat you like a brother if you will help our cause.

'Only the hungry one can eat'. If you have a desire to do something, you will do it. Without a desire, you will do nothing.

'Those who lose their turf will suffer for as long as they live'. If you betray your ideals, you will suffer.

'Those who undergo hard times with you are your brothers'. brothers? comrades? Communism!!!

'When 10 people each give up a spoon full of their bowl of rice, they can make a new bowl of rice'. Communal property. Communism!!!

When you play this game long enough, not only spoonism stops being retarded, you start to understand spoonism as an idea and you start to understand what spoonists say. And sometimes they have a point.

It is obviously meant as a satirical take on cults and since this is manga the hyperbolic satire gets additionally cranked up to 11 in typical shonen manga fashion. There are some decent underlying tones there once you get a few story pieces as to why some of the people joined for example.
Frankly Spoonism is no more silly than for example Scientology and that one has literally millions of followers.

One of our people here who knows Korean stuff says it's standard tropes, nothing innovative. Personally, it's hard to say, some parts of it I've found quite charming and engaging, but sometimes it's a bit drawn out and dull; on average it's okay. And you come to appreciate the drawings that tell the story - they're rather well done, the artist is good.

But yeah, the main attractions of the game are a) the XCOM/FFT-ish gameplay (hard as nails in some of the mission types), and b) the deep, innovative build system (the "Mastery" system).

The Codex is quite correct in awarding this and Dungeons of Nahaelbuek as some of the best recent games, even though they're not quite CRPGs. They have enough CRPG in them to be relevant to the forum, but mainly they're just very good tactical combat games with lots of developer love and attention to detail evident.

The story is good, but you will not get it. It is told in such a way, that after you finish the game, you will have no idea what is going on. For example, the very first mission has references to the events that will happen in chapters 2, 3, 4, and 6. And the whole game is like this. As a result, the majority of players think that the story is shit. And this is not their fault. After I finished the game the first time, I also thought that the story is shit. I started the second run, and I was genuinely surprised that the game has story at all and that it is actually good.

The main value of this game is awesome tactical combat and excellent build porn. The story is something extra. A lot of people don't even acknowledge the existence of the story, but they still like the game.

I believe it's what they call "nonlinear" storytelling, which isn't everyone's cup of tea. A recent pop culture product that has a similar nonlinear way of storytelling is the Witcher tv show, and that divided its community too. I only cottoned on that the story here is nonlinear after about a quarter of the way through.

As you progress and if you pay attention, it all does start to make sense.

You are aware of the term "hyperbole" right? Similar to when people say "No one believes that..." even though most peple are ware that among 7+ billion retards on this pale blue dot there are bound to be even more derpy retards that actually do believe whatever you tried to convey that no one believes in.

I believe it's what they call "nonlinear" storytelling

this thread whenever story is brought up: :prosper:

Well you are in good company then.

Not sure how good his build are since I am just around the corner to level 40 but it seems his builds seem well thought out.

Has anyone been able to make it through the second VHPD training mission on Cruel difficulty, the mission wherein you're left with Giselle and another non-ESPer character of your choice to defend against the rest of your team with VHPD backup? With my current setup I cannot possibly imagine doing it if not through cheating by just taking off all the equipment and masteries on the opposing characters and lowering the difficulty to Normal or lower (although I'm too lazy to do it, maybe there are other ways to cheese this mission).

Choose Heixing as a ranger. Equip overwatch and fire support mastery sets. Equip silenced shot and poison mastery set (for extra lulz). Gather everyone on the central tower. Try not to die from laughter.

The only problem that could arise is Hellgate Anne. In this case, you will need to send 2-3 sacrificial vhpd to hunt her down. If you have explorer dorori, you can kill her with dorori. If Anne does not have Hellgate, enjoy the show and try not die from the incoming lulz. This mission is a pure pleasure.

Ash has nice builds. He puts a lot of work and thought into his videos.

But why not use a decent art style and tell an interesting story (or no story at all, if it's about the gameplay) instead of this shit?

I have no idea. Probably, because the devs think that this is cool. This is indeed cool, but only after you get it. But in order to get it, you need to finish the game twice (which is about 200 hours) and pass an intelligence check (find the logic behind 'random' events).

Let's consider 'Pulp fiction' movie. It has about 5 story arcs that are told in non-chronological order. After the movie is finished, you easily reconstruct the sequence of the events, feel smart, and you enjoy the story. Probably, the devs wanted to achieve something similar. But what works well for 1 hour movie, will not work so well for a 100 hour game.

The game has a decent art style and an interesting story. But the story is hidden so well that very few people can find it.

If your Giselle is as deadly as mine it's a piece of cake. I chose Kylie as her backup to create distraction clones but really a correctly built Giselle could probably solo it.

The degenerates here don't even realise anymore how pathetic this 'art style' is.
And Pulp Fiction is also pretty shit btw. It has cool art direction, but the story and presentation are just bad. With bad actors and worse direction, nobody would remember it. Like nobody remembers Reservoir Dogs, which is the better movie overall btw. But I'm talking to weaboo losers, so all hope is lost. Downvote me, kiddos.

The gameplay may be great, but the art is so degenerate that no amount of virgins could convince me to try this.

Honestly mate, you'd be missing out on a great game. Bear in mind that the gameplay itself is just semi-realistic-looking, like the XCOM games, and that's what you'll spending most of your time doing - that and stroking your beard for hours fiddling with builds.

I'm not that fond of anime myself, but I came to love our Korean anime overlords :)
