Both Classic and Oddity give xp to players that complete quests/missions. Beyond that, the problem with Classic is that the player earns xp only through combat, while with Oddity only through exploration (with rare instances of combat). They both feel limited in their own way.

I just finished my run with a grenade launcher on Dom. It was very easy and quite funny. Now I'll try HG. I heard that the gameplay with HG is very boring and there will be problems with ammunition due to bursts. Lets see

I think a hybrid system could work well. Reduce combat XP, but not so much that it's irrelevant. Make oddities give decent chunks of XP. Combat XP will represent experience gained from practice and learning how to handle enemies. Oddity XP will represent exploration and accumulated knowledge of the world. And of course quests should give nice chunks of XP, representing your achievements. Personally I don't want a "level skills as you use them" system because those are very hard to balance and often lead to having to grind to keep certain skills relevant. The supposed realism advantage doesn't mean much because such a system comes with its own set of unrealistic nonsense. You're three meters tall and armed to the teeth, but you can't intimidate this scavenger because you weren't consistently rude to townspeople. You can't craft this ancient rathound leather outfit because you didn't craft three hundred regular rathound leather outfits.

Yeah I prefer Classic as well, Oddity feels more like a way for experienced players to challenge themselves
Yes and I read some opinions on both to understand the difference and Oddity fans were saying things like " its better than Classic because you dont need to grind enemies to advance and you need to explore more to gain XP "

But I do that anyway in games like this, I access every box and explore everything anyway. I just prefer being rewarded for combat

Both make sense because its about the individual preference

The economic system in this game is harsh. If you repeatedly fight respawning enemies, you will find yourself unable to afford ammo. Grinding for melee characters is possible, but it is still not as efficient as challenging new non-respawning enemies. Even in xp mode, grinding is not as efficient as doing quests to gain xp and money.
The only downside to the xp mode is that pickpocketing offers very little benefit.

I havent had that issue because I am using crossbow, grenades, psi and then some melee for close combat

This is the first time I have not selected guns in a game like this. The economy is harsh but I like it, I end up selling my guns and ammo and I find enemies often drop them. I havent started crafting yet because I use my skill points on the things I mentioned

I end up using money mostly on health items like potions and bandages and the Psi potions and money is always short but I find traders who will buy items I find

This game really delivers successfully on different builds and how they can be used efficiently in different quests to progress. Its not often you find a game where all builds can be used equally in different ways but each one has its obvious advantages and shortfalls

Chem pistols are not good at bursting out large amounts of damage in one turn. Fortunately, chem pistol build has many free feat slots, so it is recommended to also acquire energy pistol feats.
myself im part of laz0r master race, but i do respect chem pistols for how cheap feat-wise they are and cc that they provide.

On other hand crit lazor/knife require a lot. Without going all in, I dont think that you would enjoy the switch.

it's still difficult to deal with enemies that are immune to entanglement (naga and industrial bots).
bots are indeed easy. However be aware that nagas take a while to beat anyway. Its better to just keep running and be immune to their beams.

If you truly are interested in burst damage, may I interest you in spear throwing?
EDIT: actually you could use both acid gun and spear throwing, there is even a synergy to be had with entanglement

Last night I had an excellent battle that was the perfect example of what makes this game so engaging and entertaining

Underrail combat creates this exciting reality where your different builds and skills have to used in different ways if you going to succeed, you cant just adopt the same approach in every battle

Near Rail Crossing there was a side tunnel with 4 Lurker Bandits that included a boss called Flynn the Flayer

Initially I tried my normal strategy which is stealth, grenades and Psi abilities but I got killed 3-4 times and there is a sniper with a shield who could one shot me. So I changed my approach

I planted 2 x mines in a side tunnel and then used stealth to throw a Molotov to hurt them and draw aggro but I ran away behind my mines

Flynn and 2 lurkers chased me and triggered the mines and then I used Psi from a distance to kill Flynn because he is deadly in melee with his special spear

Then I was able to kill the sniper who came from the other direction in one on one combat

I ended up getting lots of loot and my first shield emitter :bounce:

This is what's nice about having lots of tools available
Yes and I have only used some tools because of my build

I also use caltrops and the net in some battles, it all depends on the map layout and the type of enemy. And since killing Flynn I have 3 x advanced nets

Lots of options around combat tools and they can all make a difference

I adopt a standard save before every major battle because sometimes I always get killed and the only way to win the battle is to understand the enemy strategy and tactics so you can plan beforehand around what tools and items to equip

I have to stop reading this thread, it just triggers me into starting another dom run.

I spent yesteray whole dy to generate a chars - I mean, Ispecificly look for Ice T and Coral, and Mushroom Cove scavenger quest - to boot, not any variant of dungeon, but for example for chem gun with mutation, for crossow and psi - with Alev, Dom for shotgunner (as slaves could get shotguns) etc, rejectin variant with dobermans and pitbulls (worse quite dangerous). Rolled 2, died quite early :troll:
Game decided yesterday to gib me Skull Smash bros all over my face, moments when it was Ice T it wasnt Mushroom Cove quest, when it was Coral was nowhere to be found OR 3 doggy Water Treatment Facility in my face in a row.
:troll:

After all that brutal random I just did successful run Jupiter Hell at Apocalypse diff instead (hidden diff level).

BTW guys - do you know, what's the deal with Fagmented Chaos vs Crit Power?
I heard it doesn't work together, or maybe any of them work at all if you took them both, or something?

I calculat a bit - CP allow for more evenly spread if damage, FC more favored to a 6-3 pellet shells.

In short, if you know something, plase share. Not going o join off discord for that.

My shotgun @ just clumsily dropped cocked grenade under her feet in that house where misterious disk is, after she 3-turned plasma sentry with first crafted shotgun, and was intended to disarm the mines... oh well... I guess once in a while it could happen..

I had a very interesting quest outcome yesterday

Firstly I am enjoying this game so much I bought and installed the DLC Expedition and that added new quests and other components

But I dont know what is new or old quests. I decided to pursue the Dude quest and Juice and I ended up in the Gray Army base, I worked out I could find a Gray Officer uniform and avoid most questioning but my lockpick and persuade is too low and I couldnt stealth past the Gray officers where the keycard is to find the mechanical oil

They kept questioning me and then not believing me and then attacking me

I tried about 12 times using stealth but I kept running into officers in the passage to get to room where the keycard is

I was about to quit and restore back to before this last part of the quest started and then go back later when my lockpick was higher but I thought let me try one more strategy

I threw a grenade at the top of the stairs on level 2 and that caused most of the Gray officers to investigate and I was able to stealth past the remaining officers and finally get the keycard and complete the Juice quest so now I can rift walk

Never expected this outcome but Im very happy and I avoided combat completely in the Gray Base :incline:

Congratulations. I pretty much always carry TNT with me, both to get rid of rocks if necessary, and because it's a way to create a distraction far away from you. It can come in handy if you're trying to pull off some particularly tricky stealth feats. In my last run I avoided killing pretty much every savage I could while sneaking around their camps to take out their leaders. My character was hoping that the savages would become more peaceful over time with their leaders and other influences gone. Didn't exactly work.

That reminds me; if you leave an area where enemies are alerted or searching for you, do they remain that way forever or do they eventually return to their positions? I've never tested it.

Yes I also carry TNT for rock removal and I now realize I can use it for distractions like this

The grenade worked but setting a timer makes more sense

I have noticed when I leave a map the enemies are still waiting when I come back but I also wonder if this aggro is permanent?

That's why you level up throwing. You don't need to invest it in completely, just up to like 60 effective skill or something. That should give you enough accuracy to not give yourself a darwin award.

Grey Army base is amazing if you know what you're doing, a pain in the arse if you don't.
Having high persuasion skill makes it trivial as you can just bluff your way through the checkpoints.

Yes and I realized without high persuasion you cant fool the officers

And then the other way to get the keycard requires 90 lockpick through the east door

I am also only level 12 so combat wasnt a realistic option

But its great how the game provides so many options to complete quests

I want to go back to the Gray Base later when Im on higher level and wipe them out :bounce:
