As for using different weapons, that makes me wonder if he can wield a large sword in one hand and then another different melee weapon on the other, so that he counts as alternating weaponry while attacking with both weapons in melee.

You can't really make a space marine combat balanced in a party that otherwise consists of mere humans. That's kind of the point. If they were only as good as a human, the emprah would have used humans for his crusade.
