So this sentence is supposed to mean this:"Skyrim is the biggest and best open world western fantasy rpg. Unfortunately, because there is no competition."

The Kingdom is in peril! The King has been kidnapped by his evil brother! Rogue armies are raping and pillaging the land! Oh, you want to go hunt and craft shit for a while...? Yeah sure no rush. The peasantry can wait. We'll postpone the king's dramatic execution, just for you.
Yea, because preparation is for faggots. We want nonstop action.

Seriously, though... what did you expect? It's a mainstream game and all those games have static worlds that only change based on players' action. Plus the usual implementations of time constraints are shit. Unless they make a robust system to make the whole world dynamic, they might as well just make the quests wait for the player. I never really understood the appeal of a couple of scripted events (you can call it C&C) that trigger suddenly when certain amount of time elapses. That doesn't sound any less "non-realistic" than static world, especially in games with little abstraction. You can see that nothing is happening in the world and then suddenly a town is destroyed by god knows what, BECAUSE MUTANTS INVADED IT LOLOLO with no real way to prevent it (apart from not triggering the event by completing the game before it happens).

I would love to see a dynamic world evolving over time, but that would be very hard to implement well, and in game like this pretty much impossible. The content (world, quests, NPCs, etc.) they are building is static. They want to tell a particular story and show the world the way they created it. The only change that could happen is cutting of content which is quite inefficient. At best it would probably be something like what the radiant AI was supposed to be in Oblivion - mostly cosmetic changes with the death of some NPCs.

Gothic 2 has the best open world building I've seen. At least I can't think of another game at the moment.

Clarification: 3D open world I mean

They surely learned from the best.

And that's bad because?

...choices should have consequences? crazy idea, i know.

Who'll be King should be no consequence for son of Blacksmith anyway; this is what DA0 done right it gave you Origins which made you care about plot lines like those... It also avoided son of farmer turns to Hero cliche too; well Blackmith origin atleast will give you good physicals and some abilities like weapon care useful for aspiring Man-at-Arms.

I think it really depends on the situation if giving the player a lot of time makes sense or not.
If the quest is "Save the king, he will be executed in three days." and the player does not do it, the king should be executed. (AoD will do it like that, right?)
BUT it has to be communicated to the player. Because this is simply not a standard. Also, a savegame should be constructed as soon as the quest is given so that the player can start from the beginning of the quest again if he somehow failed to get the message and maneuvered himself into a situation that would make the quest impossible.

However, if there is no immediate urgency, I think it's fine to let the player roam about. It might not be super-realistic to let the story wait for the player without any time limit at all, but there's that line where fun simply matters more than realism.

TES is repeating the same old unnecessary mistakes, which is also Dan's point. Morrowind stands out thanks to decent story, quest design oriented towards "something happens to the world, you take part in it" instead of later used "something happens to you, world doesn't give a fuck" and also thanks to the great world design and interesting visuals. Yet still it is the same crap in most aspects all over again. Best but in the "one-eyed king" kind of way.

Gothic is completely different kind of game. "Open world" is the only common ground.
I would say Fallout: New Vegas is the shining example of TES design done exceptionally well. Which is hilarious. Obsidian pwned Bethesda in their own design in the first try. Which is also what Dan mentioned somewhere.

EDIT: oh! he reviewed FNV and gave it 9/10 - http://games.tiscali.cz/recenze/fallout-new-vegas-recenze-pc-54011 (it's Czech)
"If New Vegas looked better it would be a gaming nirvana and I wouldn't hesitate giving it 10/10. ... After unsatisfactory Fallout 3, New Vegas kicks the series back into the top league."

I think it's a bit more complicated than that .. he wrote that several of the producers he pitched the game to have pledged for KCD. So they must have liked the game though it did not fit into their company's strategy.

He mentioned somewhere that a lot of the initial talks were successful, it's when they went to talk to the marketing people were they told to basically make a different game.

Fucking suits.

Well, at least this way, they get to keep the rights. Infinitely better outcome, if you ask me, unless they burn through all the money half-way and go bankrupt.

I played Morrowind and the first two Gothic games at roughly the same time in early 2000s. Gothic 1 was the one I played first, and it completely ruined Morrowind for me, to the point that I hated it ever since. Everything that Gothics got right and that made them enjoyable was exactly what Morrowind messed up on. Fun melee combat in Gothics (once you figured it out) based to some degree on player skill, terrible combat system in Morrowind where you just stood and kept clicking on the same button with no player involvement whatsoever. Great NPC scripting in Gothic, not just day and night cycle stuff, but NPCs sitting around campfires, cooking, pissing, fixing up their houses. In Morrowind, hideously ugly NPCs walked around meaninglessly and randomly like some sort of clockwork automatons. The way everything was placed in Gothic, from buildings and forests to unique stuff to find in the wild looked very real and immersive, whereas in Morrowind, buildings often looked like they were just randomly plopped down, the world was ugly as hell (giant mushrooms everywhere), and most things you found in the wild were the same damn caves/dungeons. Gothic was fully voiced over, Morrowind wasnt, which would be ok for an isometric game, but in a first person 3D game was a real atmosphere killer.

Pretty shitty. :(
I think that that's one of the disadvantages of coming to KS with a working game - they have a lot of the design locked down already. They just can't say "give us 100.000 more and we will implement large scale battles!" so we end with this list of "Better OST" and the like. Even the "Female PC" option seems to be just some kinda side show a la Catwoman missions in Arkham City.

The "Coming soon?" ones are the best because they allow for hope.

And also because they are a double entendre.

I'm a bit underwhelmed by the stretch goals. I was really hoping for a PC specific UI but oh well. Though I absolutely love the first stretch goal.
