So after all the bitching and moaning in the Beta thread the game turned out to be quite good in the end? That's a nice surprise.

Judging from Twitch videos and reviews, it turned out exactly what I expected it to be. A competent squad shooter.

Looks like Wasteland 2's peaked for today and it couldn't even hit double-digit concurrent players. While I am of course quite pleased at its lack of D:OS-esque success, it did do better than M&MX and Blackguards which is good news on the "non-fantasy RPGs don't sell as well as fantasy" front.
Fuck you, you stupid cunt, for starting these concurrent player bullshit in this thread. I head enough of this in the DOS thread. Say hi to Metro on my ignore list.

Well, that's a bit premature. Firstly, there was no summer sale a week before release. Secondly, you don't even know how the daily trend will look like -- whether there will be way more european players like with D:OS. Thirdly, it's likely that the weekly maximum will be at sunday evening, just like with D:OS. Let's wait for a couple of days before assessing "lack of D:OS-esque success".

Additionally, I'd like to point out that your previous comparison of D:OS with SRR based on peak numbers was a bit silly. While SRR peaked at a very high number the first day, it failed to produce anything close to that from another day on, while D:OS got consistent 15-20ish peaks throughout a whole month. Please, don't commit the same sin of comparison between two numbers out of context in this thread.

If your gfx-card gets hot:

The main culprit seems to be SSAO - I turned it off.

I just can't seem to find a party I can be happy with. My current setup feels like it's all over the place and there isn't much synergy, despite having nearly all the important skills covered. Dunno, maybe making my party leader a max charisma smooth talker who is shit in combat just drags down the whole party. The game seems to favor people capable of fighting anyways. Back to the drawing board I go.

I've yet to build a party i'm happy with yet either. Done a lot of reading on the matter since i'm a chronic reroller. One common point I see raise a lot is that you dont need to have the social skills on the same Ranger. Get yourself a charismatic leader and put the speech skill on another ranger.

I'm still waiting for felipepepe's review.

I'm not sure if I'm going to play it so soon... is it solid already, or maybe it's better to wait 1-2 months for patches?

i´m 3 hours into the game right now, i didn´t find any bugs at all but some people complain about a little sttutering in inventory. that´s not so annoying as people are saying. the only thing i miss is there aren´t any targeted shots.

How's combat now, anyway? Are you just putting people into cover (or not) and shooting at each other,
:popamole:-style?

Or do you get any special abilities that give tactical options? By no targeted shots I guess you mean no FO-style "go for the eyes"? Are there different kinds of shots at least (Snap, full auto, aimed, etc.)?

i hope this game doesn't require STR for using weapons, because I took 1 STR for my sniper :M

Confirmed. My gfx card was so hot the computer was basically functioning as a room heater (still very quiet though, which amazed me). After turing off said option (and some experimenting with others) things went back to an acceptable level.

Is there a way to change a character's portrait after character creation. I haven't found a way. There is a portrait on that thread that is spot on for one of my PCs and would really like to change it, but am several hours into the game and don't feel like restarting just for changing a portrait.

Also, why were about half of the portraits in beta removed from the release version? There is a much shorther list of portraits now. Not that this is a biggie, just wondering.

Skills? Give every ranger a weapon skill and one or two other ones. Try to keep the skills in the same general area and voila. Viable party. I got a charismatic talker, medic, sniper/tech and hacker/tinkerer. And don't forget a medic. You'll need one.

Haven't got a bruiser though as I simply gave everyone pistol/energy/rifle and smg. Works fine so far. Only skill that has pissed me off is that stupid toaster repair. Yeah, make me spend points just in order to get your in-game references and other assorted easter eggs. Lame.

My brief impressions from playing for a bit:

I like the many options present at character creation, coupled with the limited attribute/skll points you can distribute. Unfortunately, it has some issues - namely the stats raising action points/combat initiative being no-brainers. The latter in particular seems to be ridiculously overpowered.

Combat is fun enough...for now. The difficulty spike with the toad was a pleasant surprise. The lack of voiced barks/taunts seems like an odd omission though - it would add a lot of flair and pizzazz for relatively low effort (think Jagged Alliance 2 banter).

Why exactly is there a timer for using skills? This isn't Deux Ex.

Using dialogue skills seems very contrived/artificial, further cementing my opinion that attribute checks are the way to go for these things. Writing/worldbuilding doesn't seem anything special so far.

yes, i was talking about FO-style targeting :). and for snap shot, full auto, etc.. i think that each weapon have only one shooting style.

How scarce is ammo? Are battles just exchanges of gunfire or is there some strategy involved in conserving ammo?

Since loot it is random, ammo can fuck you up. Near end of AG center my leader with smg forced to use energy weapons because I ran out of .38 ammo...
And traders sell ammo for high prices, barter is not very effective before 4-5 when it came to ammo.

BTW get into Ranger Citadel ASAP, they got best weapons and armor for a long time, though you gonna need a good amount of cash.

Edti: Save your SHIT, bullshit, pigeon shit they all bring you money.

Ammo is scarce and expensive. So it's useful to have hand to hand combat skills, too.

Yeah, it is. My entire party is ranged so I need to conserve ammo and scrounge to make ends meet. Mind you, I did it on purpose because I like the challenge and because I usually end up swimming in money and loot after awhile anyway. Bruiser/unarmed fighters are defenitely not unviable. Just not that viable in the way I made my own party.

What is the point of ranged weapons when all enemies get to you in turn 1 and you can't shoot back because they are too close unless you have higher initiative which allows you to hurt them during the first turn, but if they survive they get into close combat anyway and ranged weapons get useless. i think i'll remake the party for melee combat.
