Lord Azlan Nah, this is standard "game just came out and it is pretty good" honeymoon period. There will be a marked climbdown in assessments after another week or so.

I've finished Highpool and it is much more user friendly than the early beta. It's a pretty good game but never great at anything, just a nice mixture of various mediocre-to-decent elements put together with the heart in the right place. That's enough for me in terms of it being the first 'new inxile' game and the first KS game.

I agree. Game is mostly just making me look forward to Torment 2 with hopes that it ends up a better game due to their experience with WL2.

Regarding the very low metacritic scores I suspect there is more personal butthurt going on against the devs than against the game.

Probably Brother None smacked a few cry babies too much on the inxile forums :D
Well, it's the first major fully kickstarted game, which made a lot of hype around crowdfundung, so butthurt is inevitable.

Inevitable I agree. It's just funny reading the butthurt with its false claims about the game - or even better - the butthurt has nothing to do with the game at all.

I think the skill mechanics are great - and most of them very useful through out the game.

Ha. This is one of the things I've found most lamentable about the official release.

I've gotten the impression that throughout development and beta a large enough contingency of people voicing their frustrations that, say, "Demolitions (for example) is a poor choice for a party member since it's barely useful" forced the developers to superficially add explosives to every other safe or container (for example). This seems to be the case with the majority of skills...that they're less than interesting in their utility and implementation and just lazily shoehorned into the game so that your gaming experience appears and feels much more dynamic and interesting than it really is.

So I'm in California now. The opening quest with boarding up the walls wasn't particularly thrilling but the atmosphere is perfect, really feels isolated/unexplored.

One really cool thing - I got what I assume was a random encounter on the world map with some cannibals, and I spawned a little distance away from them. Instead of just attacking straight away I took some time getting my squad into position to try and take them all out in one round, and after a minute the cannibals started talking to each other, and, after a disagreement, one of them was shot to death by his friend. Dunno if this was a truly random encounter or a scripted world map event but it's cool either way.

sniper's don't seem to be necessary. 6 AP for one heavy shot versus 5 AP for 3 solid hits. True they can start an engagement as long range, but with a mod or two, so can your assault dudes.
it's more about having a person to use all that sniper ammo you find. it's not a very heavy shot for 6 AP, it's one less shot you have to make with your AR guy to finish someone off.

Ok. Bought it, played it for ~10 hours.

First impressions: Mwah. While it does have all the items on the checklist to make it great, those items don't actually work all that well or have much synergy. Give me Fallout Tactics any day.

Lasting appeal: Less than D:OS, which I played for 44 hours before getting bored with it.

Potentially great, but it needs much work to get there, which probably won't happen.

I expect to write the exact same post for PoE.

What uses does Outdoorsman have as an active[?] skill? I think Angela have that skill and I could use it with the hotbar but no uses so far.

Ovplain, right? No reason what so ever. I played the game on beautiful setting with no trouble but even on fast setting, it keeps crashing there.

Commissar had a few hours to play this game and here're are his impressions: Game is stable and bug free so far (Radio Tower and High Pool) the writing is decent to good and fights are fast paced and exciting enough when playing on seasoned. This is not Fallouts but this is the best kickstarter game he played; Nothing can stop the righteous crusade of the Eastern Civilization Defense Squad composed of Commissar Draco (Kiss asser, Leader and Shotgun/AK-47 man) KzER0 (sniper and burglar) Sanchammer (pistoliero and techie) and Vault Dweller (medic, SMGs men and Dinamitiero) supported by two chicks we picked up in high pool and Ranger citadel.

8/10 so far and jewgold well spend. :hero:

I think this "honeymoon period" stuff might be a myth, at least partly. The people who like the game will keep on liking it, but eventually move on to other things and stop posting about it.

Meanwhile, the people who play games late tend to be an "edgier" type of person all around ("looks shit, will wait for the 75% discount on Steam lololol") so that's why later assessments tend to be snarkier. But you can already see plenty of snark now.

EDIT: That said, it's obvious that once people have, you know, actually finished the game in its entirety, they'll be able to provide more accurate assessments of its quality.

Outdoorsman is said to work for freeing people out of vines in AG Center (didn't try it myself).

For the few i played the game is much better than i expected, especially the writing.
But i can't stand the moving camera, make the game very painful to play for me to the point i stop playing.
Will no more buy game with rotating camera, i don't get the patience anymore to fight with it, thanks god PE and Torment will be fix camera.

Why is everything in the wasteland trapped? Like, everything. Do these people have nothing better to do with all of their explosives than wired them to every crate they can see. seriously, the value of the explosives must be higher than the value of the contents of the boxes in a lot of cases.

I was disappointed-ish at the way Rail Nomads played out. When I saw there was a back entrance and that I could successfully sneak in and grab the golden spike without being seen, I thought I'd be able to go and steal back the brake collar and then rig up some fake John Henry miracle--maybe there'd be a statue of him that the rail thieves had been camping out at, and we'd put the artifacts in each of his hands or something, and the tribals would go CLEARLY JOHN IS ASHAMED OF BROTHER FIGHTING BROTHER. but the goldsters immediately knew I'd been the one to steal it, even when I closed the door behind me and wasn't seen on my way in. it could easily have been made to look like a divine resumption of a godly gift, but nope. I was glad I got to have my golden ending, but it could've been a little more fun than just running back and forth and succeeding on a few speech checks.

I read a post by BrotherNone on another forum saying that the peaceful resolution would require a freeform dialogue option, but I didn't need one. Was it just because my ass skills are absurdly high? There were a few checks in there. On which further topic, has anyone found -any- freeform dialogue? I routinely ask NPCs about things I'd think they'd know about--springs most to mind the general right after Ace's death's been investigated, wanting to know what he had to say about robots, because, y'know, history--but haven't found a single one yet. And why is it that sometimes they give a "Huh?" response and sometimes they say nothing at all? Are the nothing responses ones that were -supposed- to have content that just never got written?

All in all, I'm okay with it. I wouldn't mind the ability to mass respec my party now that I realize that I'll have seven permanent members, not four--trying to specialize each of my starting members in 4 or 5 utility skills is a lot harder than having each party member specialize in 2 or 3, and the commensurately low combat skills have made friendly fire a hilarious certainty.

Also...is there some kind of formations option I'm not seeing? It would be super great if every encounter didn't start with my dudes in an arbitrary lump of humanity, shooting each other and blocking their own melee characters. I know I can manually position, but I prefer to get in an alpha shot, and aggro range is too far, with the way NPCs wander, to reliably position my whole squad and still be inside assault rifle range for that alpha.

Also, nerf the FAMAS. Or don't nerf it ever. I was annoyed with myself for starting with two riflemen then getting Angela as a third, but that FAMAS three-round birst, what the fuck, man. I would be completely cockmbat blocked without it.

Has Commissar lost his mind to the point where he only refers to himself in the 3rd person?

Can't speak in general terms, but I sometimes, though not often, have "honeymoon periods" with games. D:OS is an example. I really, really liked it for the first 20 hours, but after that it kept presenting me with more (well, actually sort of less*) of the same. I've also had the reverse, where a game is really lukewarm until I spend time with it. I really didn't like neither PS:T or KotC until I'd spend about 3 or 4 hours with each.

The "Wow! Everything is new and exciting thing!" is something I'd expect many people feel like. Another example is M&MX, which I loved to begin with. Later I conceded to some of Darth Roxor's points (though not his overall conclusion at all).

*As in, the same hubs, just less complex, or the same encounters, just less interesting.

Ok, uncontrolable NPCs and weapon jamming are really getting on my nerves. I dumped Rose, because she constantly went rogue with a chance of 15%. And there is a weapon jam in each turn with a chance of 2-3%.
sea Brother None Fix this weapon jamming bullshit with a patch because it takes away the fun from combat, leaving just frustration. That 2 percent should be 2 percent, not 20.

I played it for 3-4 hours so far, had 5-6 jammings and Angela went rogue twice (possibly when the leader passed out). He has 3 or 4 points in leadership.

I've forwarded your feedback on this, thanks.

I don't think the game is lying about the numbers; rather I think this is down to something a bit like this:

- Each party member has average 2% chance to jam
- You have 7 party members
- That becomes 14% total for each "round" of combat
- You have average 5 "rounds" in each combat scenario
- Jam chance feels high as a result (at least 50% chance someone will have a weapon jam during every combat encounter)
- Additional potential hidden modifiers like low Luck also factor in

If low luck has tangible negative modifiers, that should visually be shown on the weapon stats. It's equally as frustrating being an unarmed melee man with an 80% hitrate and missing 3 hits in a row.
