I tried this recommended party in this gamefaqs walkthrough, but I cannot win a battle, always somebody gets serious injury/bleeding and dies. No healing for that.
Then I tried the starting party - have won 3 battles in a row. But they keep saying this party not optimal. No serious injury/bleeding, anyway the 2 priest can heal it.

I do not want to use quick battle - that is the ultimate boredom. Feels like I playing a manager game, which I dislike.

Yeah, quick battle always felt weird. It is even faster than gold box. I believe it was just the era. I can't recall if Road wars & War of the Lance had the quick battles or not. Tbh, I don't recall how many of the old war games went either. Maybe those will get a massive GOG release (that of delve deep into the archives).

I went with
Fighter/Thief x 3
Fighter/Priest x 2
Sorceror
Ranger/Sorceror
Ranger/Priest

I thought this party worked well.

And eventually you will want to use quick combat to keep sane. If a battle looked easy I would save, do quick combat, and accept the results if none died, else reload.

I hate to see people using a party someone else told them to use. If you want to, fine, but any party you make can grow into the game. As I recall it is okay for characters to die. Return to base and make new ones (maybe tweak their builds using what you've learned). Meanwhile the ones that survived will get stronger and eventually your party can survive the starter area which will never run out of trash spawns. There's no rule that says every character has to have the same amount of xp.

I can't recall if you can have a roster of characters you can switch out on the fly like Bardstale or Might & Magic. At times, I think adventurer guilds is a great feature.

Been a long time, but as I remember you can delete characters from your party and create new ones. Can't keep a stable like Bard's Tale.

Now, that's one of the QOL I wouldn't mind modded to old games (player stables you can swap out alts). Some QOL can ruin a game but this wouldn't be terrible imho. Faster performance is always nice as well. I don't think you could reset the town/ruins maps specials but dungeons you can. Sometimes old games you can fuck maps and redo them by using a copy of a fresh disk (back when we disk nibbled copies so we didn't play off originals).

I did this to Sword of kadash once and laughed when it worked.

Why the 3 Thiefs?

Do I need Ranger in WC only?

I could make a Fighter/Cleric/Sorcerer/Thief/Ranger character. Need INT=29. Is it good?

Absolutely horrible imo. You have 8 characters to spread your needed skills around, no reason to put them all on 1 guy who can't lift a dagger and dies in 1 hit. Plus he will be shit at everything if you spread your skill points around ... or if you specialize him in a few things then there's no reason for him to have all those other skills in the first place. I mean maybe if you play for 1000000 hours with these shit characters eventually you can level up a lot of skills, which I guess is fine if you never want to play any other game ever again, but why go out of your way to be so inefficient?

My strategy is to have a minimum number of multiclasses, not as many as possible. It's good to have a lot of fighters but more than two priests or two sorcerers is a waste. More than one thief or one ranger is a waste. I guess you could make 7 pure fighters and one "every fucking class there is dude" but it's horribly inefficient because that guy is bad at everything and he only gets one move per turn. What if you want to cast a fireball and also heal someone? Oh, too bad your Dexterity is 5 so also you never get to move.

Build a team, not one crippled freak.

Just my opinion, play whatever you want of course ... but I do not think you want this abomination.

Interesting, this game has long combats. But somehow it is not boring, and I do not feel it slow. May be it has no annoying slow animations, only displays the result of the action and done. In LoF I went crazy while watching the slow attack animations.

Why do I need First Aid when my priests can pray for healing?

What skill should I improve? He has a two-handed sword.

This is one of those games you appreciate shields and hate them at the same time because your foes use the exact same skills. Magic battles can be long and drawn out too with all the counter magics and dispels that can happen vs buffs. Oh look, 3-4 groups of sorcerers & adventurers.

Goldbox is baby time compared to WC/ET. This game if played extensively beyond completion with tactical is akin to just playing casual chess by yourself listening to the radio and nibbling on cheese & drinking wine while reading the paper in that nice room where the morning sun shines golden in the morn to fiery amber in the afternoon. Ahhh memories...

WC/ET - GOLD MEDAL
Disciples of Steel - SILVER MEDAL
Gold Box - BRONZE MEDAL

If I can ever get my c64 up out of storage and hooked up to a working crt I'll take a pic of the chars but I'd be reaching to think this'll happen. Rat war and all that.

From crpgaddict:
"Given all the fighting that you have to do, only an utter lunatic would fight every combat on the tactical screen."
Yeah.... crazy ..... >.> ....... <.< ........ yeah......
The power curve in WC is certainly steep, to the point where once you've levelled past an area, any random encounters can be freely skipped with no danger. But it can still be fun to stomp rats :)

"You will also probably pretty quickly run into a bunch of thugs that are taking a girl hostage."
"In the west end there'll be a bunch of thugs accosting a girl."

Where exactly? I have not seen these thugs with a girl so far. I have searched all square at west side of the town.

It's a random location. Just explore the town and the encounter will eventually happen.

I want to say yes? Was it just keep killing crap with decent armor and a few weapin types, sell sell sell and use the money to raise various skills to 100 sparing xp. Maybe that was a later playthrough. Hell, i think i even tried creating shitty dudes and muling their money which is horrid cheating. What next a hex editor? But killing legit and selling then training is fine. Of save that gold to increase magic items hmmm hmmmm??

The "telephone ringing" spellcasting sound is great. If you fall asleep during the long battle, it will wake you up!
