Fuck it, I liked the game enough after all to buy Digital Deluxe on GMG with 17% discount. Don't want to be kept by Game Pass subscription and forced to finish it in 30 days, plus it's nice to have all 3 DLCs ready.

Reviews came in today and they are around 82/100, which is pretty good - so my doubts listed before were not warranted.
I also liked it but I'm too much of a europoor to get it at full price, especially now that it costs 70 and not 60. Gonna try goyimpass (if it works in my shit country), pretty sure I can finish it in a week.

Nioh 2 seems to be more atmospheric than this game

Chinese reviews already in, Steam currently at Mostly negative.

Some fun auto translate reviews:

Have you people in charge of PC transplantation encountered some past events that you can't let go of, such as your mother being electrocuted to death by a mouse leak?

Higher prices enjoy worse picture quality and about 0 optimization, games from Japanese developers = Schrödinger's cat
Your dad has a controller, but your dad loves playing with a mouse and keyboard. The keyboard and mouse perspective is like your mother's shit, you protector bastard is calling your mother.
Is your mother's ninja group dead at home without a funeral? 720p is blurrier than your mother's portrait and can't be changed. Is this how you use it on PC?

Let's build a wall and keep Chinese play only Chinese games. To be honest the world will be a better place without Chinese.

There's a certain level of irony saying this in a thread for a game clearly set in China, filled with Chinese characters and mythology, made by the Japanese.

You misunderstood my statement.

I find it hilarious that Japs keep making games about China, because that wall already exists and chinese game devs generally make games for domestic audiences, not international.

Edit: and the ones they do market internationally tend to be disgusting gacha mobile scam shit, like a game version of tiktok.

So it looks like absolutely no improvements were made to performance. That demo was indeed a similar build to the release build. Goddamnit Koei and Team Ninja. Should have just delayed the PC version if they couldn't handle the crunch, but something tells me the geniuses at the top at Koei didn't give a shit, as usual.

The first boss is insanely hard. People thought Margit in Elden Ring was too much of a difficulty spike for new players - this guy is much harder and you encounter him only 10 minutes into the game. Btw I fucking hate all the flashy effects in this game. Sekiro did it better, you could see attacks coming without needing a giant red wave coming from the enemy.

Looks like I'm sticking with Nioh 2 still. Hope they fix the performance within the next few days.

It definitely doesn't look like a game that shouldn't run well on my GTX 1060. It looks way worse than Sekiro, that runs perfectly almost maxed. And even Elden Ring runs way better at high settings, with maxed shadows.

Yeah, they royally fucked this one up. Actually going to have to withdraw my purchase too. The problem is that the performance is detrimental enough to effect my actual gameplay, I found. When the game demands precise timing and chugs at the moments when it's most important, I can't abide by that. Even on the lowest settings it would happen at those moments of extreme motion. We'll see how the GOTY edition turns out. Genuinely kind of sad. Was really looking forward to this.

Performance is fine. The worst thing that has happened in this game was a crash right after character creation, otherwise performance is good. Only using 61% of my full GPU usage. Gonna throw it up to 4K.

I keep dying to trash mobs. I keep trying to dodge using the wrong button because I rebound dodge in Elden Ring and DS3 to L1, but L1 doesn't dodge in this game so I am going to have to retrain my brain.

Great game. I love the speed of combat. Also the gitting gud part. I put the voices to Chinese for more immersion!

Performance is fine.

Happy to hear it's fine for you. It most certainly is not for me. First mission area was decent up until the first boss. Second mission area, however, ran like garbage throughout, with particular spikes with bosses. It didn't hinder my gameplay that much, but it's enough to be annoying, and I'm not going to pay that much to be annoyed playing a game I fundamentally enjoy, only to mar the experience.

My system is aging, but I can play Nioh 2, Sekiro, and Elden Ring with little to no problems at all. This port is unacceptable in its current state.

RIP.

Dunno what to do now. I don't want to play anything else right now but I don't want to blow 70 euros, especially on a shoddy port. Life is pain.

Playing it at 4K definitely takes a dump on framerate. Set shadows and volumetric shit to medium/standard. It makes 4K run flawlessly on mine, at least at 60fps.

Performance started off pretty good for me but did noticeably drop as missions went on. Not enough to be a real detriment to my enjoyment but not far off.

First boss really was the hardest so far in the first few hours. I really had to git gud with my parrying, so I don't mind. I'm a bit mixed on the allies. At first I was positive as they have extra mechanics tied to them and you get to build social links, but they really do make the game too easy, especially with two. I got sloppy but still fumbled my way through bosses without too much hassle. I'll have to see about limiting or dropping allies completely.

The core combat loop is great fun though so far magic feels less impactful than in Nioh 2. I like maintaining buffs and all that and there's very little reason not to use magic since it's not competing for level up resources. Though I can't help but wonder if this'll limit build variety and lead to lots of similar jack-of-all-trades builds.

Characters and cutscenes are entertaining as ever, no complaints there.

They've clearly put in extra effort to the level design. Lots of area variety and alternate routes. You don't feel boxed in like with the typical Nioh mission.
