Late to the party, but now finally having an upgraded PC I want to give it a shot.

Is the sexually degenerate content really so widespread in this game as the memes here suggest? Like partymembers constantly hitting on you etc? Can it be shut down easily? I've even seen some mods to just outright remove this stuff, should I download it? I just want to play a game in peace without constantly rolling my eyes.

I've also seen there is some sort of 'dark urge' option - is it advisable to take that on a first playthrough or does it lock out a lot of content?

no. You really need to go out of your way to get into those situations. I would skip dark urge on a first playthrough AND I would start with custom difficulty, with the honor mode ruleset enabled

There are definitely situations where other characters hit on you even if you're not interested. One can refuse it without negative consequences but it is still existant. However, the advances other characters make are not inherently sexual. It's "just flirting" if you refuse them. But it still annoyed me.

Dark Urge doesn't really lock you out of content because there is so much optional content in the entire game that you will always miss certain paths based on your decisions. Actually Dark Urge gives you additional unique content that is only available as Dark Urge. But I still wouldn't recommend it unless you're interested in playing as a murderhobo.

Yeah, about that...Wizard dude once out of nowhere teleports me into a meadow in an unskipabble cutscene because he wanted to watch the stars which totally isn't prelude to buttsex.

surprisingly that one doesn't lead to anything romanic, but dont pretend like you got caught off guard. Gale's projection tells you he's waiting for you

Nah, definately not that often. Though it does happen a couple of times. But you can simply say "no".

Dark Urge is an interesting option. You can generally resist the... urges. Not always, but... usually. And get a neat item, at least (very desirable if you want to be a shadowy type).
It adds some content, so if I were planning to only play once, I think I'd pick the Durge.

And yeah, play on Honor mode or custom mode with Honor rules.

The game has been heavily and repeatedly patched since release, so Larian might have fixed the "mistakes" with scripting, in regard to the pregenerated party members throwing themselves at the customizable PC at every opportunity, repeating even when rejected. There's extensive testimony in this thread about the issues that existed, but it's probably much easier to avoid in the game's current version (n.b. I avoided Gale's entirely even in an early version by not following up on his offer of viewing "the Weave"). The writing itself wouldn't have changed, ranging from adequate to cringeworthy, and those pregenerated party members have ridiculous backstories of the type that might be created by a precocious middle-schooler for their super-special D&D character.

He's an origin character, not an option available to everyone. You have to pick him as your main for him to show up in the story (meanwhile the others can be recruited if you don't pick them during character creation, like in Divinity 2). By default he's a scalie sorcerer but he's customizable.

No, if you say no they just rape you, I still can't believe Larian got away with this.

Dark Urge is a bhaalspawn, just so you know. He was probably introduced to satisfy people complaining about BG3 not feeling like a bg game. But that also brought along Jaheira, Minsc and the change in tone with the game from borderline horror to full on Bioware stuff.

Fortunately there's now a custom companions mod to avoid the romances with

Full Costom Companions (Hirelings)

Thus avoiding the nonsensical backstories and being able to play an rpg more as it should be; with a full custom party of companions without needing to use an exploit losing out mostly on just a little bit of ignorable experience points and some replaceable equipment.

Its just his default starter setup. You can freely pick any race and class for him/her. For example I think some kind of Assassin and/or Gloomstalker works nicely. Or a Shadow Monk. Those classes will make good use of his mantle (though it can still be quite useful for many other classes). And of course, also benefit greatly from playing as a Duergar.
His/her Background tagged skills are preset, though.

I'm not convinced that played a decisive role in the tone/story changes. One of the main issue drivers was likely the urge to encourage people to accept the squid powers (and not squander soo much development and creative effort...). Plus the urge to include other major characters from Forgotten Realms, and I don't necessarily meant the Bhallspawn.

Personally I rather liked the Bhaalspawn thread, even if it was undercooked.
And Jaheira is one of my top favorite companions here (unlike BG2).

Yeah it has been fixed up a bit. Gale was less rabid the last time I played compared to the first time shortly after release.

Of course my contention at the time was that Larian had probably initially written the Gale stuff with a female romance in mind and had been too lazy (or too be fair, simply too overworked) to nuance it for either a gay or strictly-bros relationship, and I think that's so baked-in that it's probably impossible to tailor into a strictly-bros relationship. IIRC there are still some instances where Gale casts sheep's eyes on you with his words, but at least now it doesn't lead to anything unless you specifically invite it.

I finally decided to try the game... and it's pretty good. I'm only few hours in, so it can still turn to shit, but so far so good.
But how do you guys deal with this shit camera and camera movement... exploring the world is pain in the ass and when
there are multiple layers of terrain (like spiders and ettercaps under the goblin village) I spend more time fighting the camera
than the monsters. Is there something I'm missing? I've not seen people mentioning the camera but it's fucking horrendous.
And I remember long time ago I've tried DoS and the shitty camera made me uninstall the game even then. But BG3 seems
like a much better game, so it would be shame to uninstall...
Do I just have to suck it up? :negative:

Yes the camera is dogshit in this game, especially when dealing with multiple floors, as there is no way to easily (or at all) go a floor up/down like in XCOM for example.

This mod helps a little bit, but doesn't solve the floor issues: https://www.nexusmods.com/baldursgate3/mods/945

Was about to say the same. The camera sucks absolute donkeyballs, I never understood why people have such a hardon for rotatable cameras in games like this (NWN2 etc) - together with the atrocious and soulless UI it is hard to keep on going despite a decent game being underneath. Maybe I'll even try it with a controller, I just dont want to fight with the camera all the fucking time.

Besides that, I am pleasantly surprised how well this game runs. I got a pre-used machine from a friend with 6 year old GPU and it still looks very good and runs smoothly. Gotta give credit where credit is due.

I usually don't go bitching about the camera but yeah, in BG3 it's something else, holy shit.

Is it only us, the third or fourth wave late-commers noticing it? Or were those complaints initially shut down by the fanboys... er, fanpeople?

Yeah the worst camera since NWN2. Have to constantly rotate and zoom out. For that reason alone I always consider 2d way superior for party based games.

Camera is okay in the open areas, but navigating interior areas is a nightmare.

A lot of interiors also just look stupid, because they've made the ceiling 10 floors higher than it should be, just to give you room to move camera around.

That's a bit harsh. I would not call it a nightmare.
It's nowhere near as bad as NWN2.

But yeah, crossing doorways is a pain. As well as battles with any degree of verticality.

The best combo (in fact pretty nearly the best movement combo in any CRPG to date) is to use both the popular camera mod and the WASD mod together in BG3, that way you have decent 3rd person movement for exploration (which reveals a fairly fleshed-out 3-d envirnoment - i.e. ceilings and such, presumably for cutscenes), and you can flip to the normal top-down mode at willl, and/or automatically for combat, with a comfortable amount more of zoom-out-ability.

It's still a bit of a problem, full spinney-rotatey cameras in CRPGs. I know some people prefer 2-d for ease of use, but as against that you have to balance the weirdness of area construction that's necessary to make the 2-d areas properly navigable.

Personally I'd rather have the sense of a real place (i.e a place not oddly gerrymandered for an ease-of-use reason that's external to the virtual world) at the cost of a little bit of camera jankiness now and then, but that may be because I'm a pianist and touch typist, so jockeying and nudging with keys and a mouse is pretty much "invisible" to me.
