Time mgmt in P:K is 95%/5% carrot/stick with the stick being pretty straightforward once you figure out how to handle the curse timing as long as you’re not totally rest-spamming.

Should have done something similar in Deadfire with new dialogue options or somesuch available depending on how quickly you catch up to the big green man each time and/or how many quests you’ve completed.

I like the Deadfire setting. Despite this Obsidian still managed to create a huge and boring RPG.

Worth it? No.

It succeeds in what it set out to do. It is the perfect isometric CRPG. Problem is, what it set out to do is boring and archaic. Trying to revive Infinity Engine games was a bad idea from the get go. Thank God it seems most have abandoned it apart from some Russians.

Is it worth it? If you really, really want to play an isometric CRPG, and you have an SSD with enough space, it is worth it. Don't even think about playing it on an HDD. You have been warned.

Personally, i liked it, although i prefer Skyrim.

It's alright, the difficulty completely drops around lvl 10-12. It only picks up in DLCs (the secret of the sanctum one is a must have, other twos are meh). Don't play Turn-Based.
Main problem is how unfinished the base game feels, I remember feeling quite frustrated during the first playthrough.

Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire
Well, The Beast of Winter DLC was giving me Planescape:Torment / MotB vibes. Found it very cool first time I played it.
Seeker, Slayer, Survivor was like the best arena-centric DLCs I've played. Fights really well composed and balanced to provide challenge.
So take it as you will.

Plus really awesome Rapier for Ciphers / cool Axe for melees as rewards. And the Coil belt, which is kinda nice if you like to use the Empower mechanics.

Worth it.

Though, goddamn. I'm replaying it right now, for the first time. Figured I could try the turn-based mode. And I am having some issues trying to stay interested in the whole thing. Already, like 10, 15 hours into it. I don't know, I'm finding it tough to really give a shit about any of the factions, or any of the companions really. Or the main quest. The game plays well otherwise, looks spectacular. And it is fun! I think. But, yeah, something's wrong.

Been a while since I played the first one, can't imagine its writing was vastly superior. But I did put more than 600 hours into the first Pillars of Eternity, before finally seemingly growing having enough of it.

IMO sit back, relax, explore, develop builds, gather sweet loot....
You really don't need to do all quests.

Typically in a play-trough I'd skip whole portions of the game/whole factions. There's enough content for that, particularly with the DLCs.

And well, Turn Based is quite... peculiar. Its an option, sure. One that castrates important facets of the game mechanics and turns the game into a slog sometimes. So in general I prefer Real Time here.
Although its not bad for casters...

I love TB in general, though I agree here it is quite... peculiar as you say. Incentive in few ways, half-baked-yet-overcomplex in many others. One for all - it's even more unclear when a character finishes a spell / skill, where it lands, and how long it lasts. First level spell that dazes for "one turn" cast by a charater with DEX 17 takes one-and-half turn to cast, and the effect ends right after the creature attacks e.g. often immediately. Thanks but no thanks. No more sneak attacks, no more tactical advantage for the whole team, caster useless for two turns for one-turn spell. Frustrating and terrible, sad panda is sad.

Still, not all skills are like that. Some are "free", the speed of others could be upped by other means (lesser armor, quickening consumables / free abilities), and even like this the TB mode offers some more clarity. Especially in "who is doing what" and by solving deleting the issue of chaotic crowding/AI pathfinding.

I've tried the TB and got quite disapointed in a short time - 6 hours of playtime or so. Other people say it's okay. Hard to judge everything.

so how would you make a la long carabine build? is it viable to fire them muskets then engage in melee?
Black Jacket Fighter subclass has got the weapon switch for free. Meaning: switch the weapon sets to and fro how many times you want without any hindrance whatsoever.

I've been giving this a chance since I'm cleaning out my backlog. I liked the first island and a few others well enough. I am now made at Nakedkafka, enlisted the water bending shark, and broke into Arkham Asylum. Cleaning out the basement wasn't much fuss, but I get stomped into paste when I go up a floor. I will return later. Interest has been waning tremendously. I'm contemplating moving this down my backlog priority. Again. I feel like I'm being unfair to this game.

The multiclassing added in deadfire breathed a lot of life into POE's somewhat stiff, dull combat. The writing is noticeably worse but as a buildporn combat game it's much more fun, so it depends what you like out of an RPG.

Not to say the writing is terrible or anything, there are some fun sections that feel almost like playing a really good tabletop game with a skilled DM, but don't expect anything of White March quality.

I gave it about ten hours. One main, and perhaps autistic gripe, is spells/abilities refresh after combat so you can just spam your best abilities/spells etc, leaving no resource management or creativity in combat. Dialogue/story subpar too, but that was to be expected.

I mean, people should be forced to note what games they like from the said genre, why specifically, whenever they criticise or say any kind of nay.
I believe we'd have 500% more chuckles, and 100% more clarity on what actually stands for value, and what for I Dislike These Two Features The Whole Thing Now Sucks kind of subjectivity.
