I am so excited for Diablo 4 that I deleted the email inviting me to the server alpha test on arrival (let's be real here, the actual server beta test is gonna be on June 6, this is alpha).

Did they seriously put Leah 2.0 in this shit? Neyrelle is horrible. There was a glimmer of hope in the world being dark and gloomy, wretched and unforgiving. Instead we get this mary sue with mother issues. This really is a depiction of hell. From what I have read, at the end of the available questline in beta the narrator tells you that she is going to be the most important character going forward.

Arabs were well-represented in the second game. But in D4, they have been replaced with Africans. Is that not problematic? Or are all "people of color" interchangeable?

Africans tick more diversity boxes I guess.

Niggas will revolt when Diablo 5 replaces them with:

The legions of Hell have invaded the land of the Smurfs; It is now your mission, as papa Smurf to stop Diablo and his hellspawn.

Did the world boss, was pretty fun. Was another thing I was slightly concerned about since I didn't want raids in Diablo since the pseudo-raids in shit like Borderlands annoy the hell out of me too, but it was just a big monster with multiple clicking and didn't require anything too fancy. I do hate that it spawns on a timer which means I probably won't do those very often, but it was a fun fight.

Speaking of which, the rejiggered drop rates (How it's supposed to be for launch) feel a bit too low. I don't mind if they don't do the full Diablo 3 of finding gear constantly (Though I like it because these are casual games) but I had 1 legendary as a regular drop and two from the big boss which is fairly scanty. I prefer the D3 method of "Play 20 hours with a new character and now you're comfortably max level and got decent loot" compared to the D2 method of "Play 20 hours farming one specific boss or dungeon for loot and maybe getting one piece". There's also the D1 method of "Play 20 hours and you've beaten the game a couple times and found plenty of gear) but D2's been an albatross around the neck casual clicking for too long, despite all the good shit it does too.

I also participated in the server slam since it doesn't require pre-purchase. Thoughts:
-The basic gameplay feels okay to me, at least in the early game its slower. But this is still basically D3 combat. The game feels uncomfortably familiar right away due to the return of so many former abilities from previous games.
-The aesthetic and art style is much better but still has a lot of exaggerated features. Go into the gem shop and the gems on display are bigger than your head. That type of stuff now clashes with some of the area design that is pretty realistic. Far better than D3 overall but not perfect.
-I do like that the bosses require at least a little thought to escape their telegraphed damage. Ashava was kind of fun but I played a rogue and had ranged abilities. Melee is going to require a lot more awareness and skill to not die on these.
-If you're looking for immersion here then don't bother. The more open structure is like a carnival where the icons and circles on the map are all screaming for your attention. You can just grind and roam around but this doesn't feel like a world at all. MMO sidequests everywhere. Defend this pillar or this zone. Directed rewards the whole way through.
-Seeing other players roaming the wilderness was pretty rare. A few times I would help or get helped with side quests or events which was kind of nice.
-Took me maybe four hours to get to level 20. Thats with letting all the dialogue play out and not skipping cut scenes. Lillith is at least interesting but there isn't a major story hook here.
-I probably got fifty or so upgrades and the only one I could feel was one that gave access to a new ability I hadn't selected. Its just constant small upgrades you'll equip and think nothing of. I really don't like this form of itemization.
-There are things you can work towards in the starting region/zone that will be unlocked for every character which is kind of nice. Like additional skill points or another potion use.
-Value is subjective but this is not worth $70 to me. Half that maybe. And thats not getting into the battlepass and other distractions in the game.

For shame that Blizzard heavilly nerfed the Necromancer and sorcerer. We're my two favorites during previous beta, now they feel like shit.

No fun allowed ...
and they just confirmed they are buffing the necro minions back up through a server patch, so no worries there.

The frick is a season pass? Does this mean that D4 is going to have some kind of monthly sub or what?
Nah, seasonal rewards most likely, so cosmetics armor and mounts n shit each season that fits that theme and can only be unlocked with the pass.

There's a free pass and a buyable pass, only cosmetics tho on the purchaseable one, they confirmed that numerous times already.

If you don't care about seasons in ARPGs and/or don't care all that much about cosmetics, season pass/battle pass will have 0 impact on your experience singeplay or multi.

I'm pretty optimistic that a smooth launch is actually possible. They improved performance a lot since the last beta. Didn't see any queues, either.

Why would abilities from former Diablo games make you uncomfortable?
Have you ever revisited a game you've already played only for your mind to reject it, moments after starting it, because its too familiar?

This is the same phenomenon only for an ostensibly new game overlaying a decade old one.

This weekend was my first chance to play the beta for several hours (during the previous beta I was on holidays and only managed to play for 1 hour in a hotel room).

My impressions:
Good
- art style better than in D3 (I know, the bar is not set very high)
- return of old school spells like fireball and fire wall
- verticality is a nice touch

Bad
- MMO lite
- Horrible level scaling
- Smart loot - most items you find geared toward your class
- Further casualization: a sorceror cannot equip swords
- Lea 2.0
- UI permanently displays keyboard shortcuts. I did not bother to check if it can be disabled in Control Settings, but it clearly shows who this game is geared toward
- It is obviously the same Diablo 3 engine, movement feels the same way, boss health bars look the same way
- Pretentious writing - lame in-game poetry displayed in one of in-engine cutscenes

The items you find that aren't geared toward your class come from the bonus loot chance. Different monsters have a chance to drop their bonus item. Skeletons will drop their normal loot then there's a % chance they'll also drop a crossbow. Cultists can drop daggers. etc. Handy to know. Helps pick which dungeon to farm. :)

Why own a game when you could own a box.

Also with modern Blizzard I suppose it's truth in marketing, any game you buy from them made now you never own it's just rented until they shut down the servers.
