Arcanum had the best race/gender effects of any mainstream RPG I've ever seen. At the time I nodded sagely, and thought, "Surely other games will pick up on this." Nope.

I can only imagine how they would get pilloried in the modern climate for making women have different stats than men.

I would like to see Daggerfall-like system where you can set advantages and disadvantages yourself . It's a shame that nobody else implemented something similar . For me it is much better than racial premade characteristics .

The thing I've liked the most in Morrowind was not having questmarkers and forcing people to learn the layout of the island instead of just chasing the arrow.
Ya know, when did I say anything about questmarkers? All I mentioned was that I would like to know if I had a quest or not. Like a journal entry that says "Hey, you talked to some guy and he told you about this thing that he wants you to check out."

A lot of the time there wasn't anything there.

Depends what you mean as destructible environment. I wouldnt mind being able to blow up holes in buildings for example, which is not possible now

Any archtype that has -insert fantasy race- before the class is an archetype that humans can't play. What that entails depends on the world, it can be anything from a physical, cultural or political, but the role played will be unique.
Any fantasy race can also play any human archtype, ultimately, since it's a fantasy game, homo saps should just be stricken from the game altogether.
Though I do disagree that having the races alone is enough, they should have different racial bonuses, so if you play an orc wizard, you should clearly be subverting it by the fact that it's not as easy or it plays differently.

Dragon Age:Origins did races well, the stats weren't great(Dwarf magic resistance was unique at least), but the effect on story and roleplaying was.

Orcs can be replaced by any other warrior culture in existence. They are literally green barbarians. Other than that they are the same as humans.

Firstly, you play too much WoW.
Secondly, no they can't. Those of us who aren't 10 years old know there weren't really any shield biting psycho berserkers, and that no human could actually fullfill that role without having significant different physiology than their real life counterparts. And if that's the case, you've created a fantasy race already, just a really shitty boring one. The other alternative is magic, which ruins the archtype.

You're right. Maybe they could design the game world normally, but in the easiest difficulty, they could add this to please all the retarded people. After all, the more the game sells, the better. The risk is that when a company begins to introduce "casual mechanics", they rarely can "hold their hand" and not go all the way to the end of the road, making the game design around it.

Don't think we have to worry about quest markers and romance options, they are just being smart, taking advantage of this pointless media frenzy that has by now become a standard. Visibility, and free advertising prior to the Kickstarter. More clicks, more of an interest, no one loses. Random, anonymous polls always gave the average Jane/Joe a sense of false entitlement.

Plus, if taking advantage of said moronic media frenzy can result to a meet between mca and Swen, all the better. They get to appear as "listening", while in fact promoting the type of model they were initially focused on, lol
Said it before, don't underestimate Swen in terms of business savvy. While a lot sleeker and indirect than Fargo, he's just as good. Or has become in any case.
Have a look from Dragon Commander onwards, see how seemingly random or secondary outlets, posts or mentions were made only so as to pave the way for future announcements :)

Yeah, Swen is really good at marketing and PR. In fact, he seems much better than Fargo who comes off as a sleazy has-been business man. Swen always seems to be doing everything impromptu and excited. You could be easily fooled if you forgot he's the head of a multi-million corporation.

I don't trust any of these assholes, but Swen makes good games, or has so far.

Of all the major oldschool RPG developers, Larian is clearly most at risk of "going casual". Their aggressive expansion means they have to get larger audiences now. (inXile btw is among the least at risk)

Of course, I can think of worse things than a complex turn-based RPG with a few casual features.

Maybe, but Swen seems to be very proud of releasing a deep RPG for consoletards and didn't even dumb down a single gameplay element while doing so AFAIK. I'd only start worrying about Larian going casual if consoletards don't accept D:OS.

But original Berserkers were all humans, as in real humans, not fantasy humans. Only orc race that really has different goals/psychology to normal people were Wahammer Orcs. And Warhammer Orcs are first of all football hoolies on steroids, and secondly almost perfectly replicated by normal humans in the newest Mad Max.
But yeah I take my statement back, there are fantasy races that cannot be replaced by just weird humans. Like bug people with hive mind, demons or treants. Sadly green humans, pointy eared humans and short humans are not amongst them.

Human champions who fought duels for viking feudal lords you mean.

The berserker as in mad angry guy who goes into a fight naked and slashes like a madman was never a thing.

Neither were Orcs. We are talking about fantasy archetypes. The berserker-archetype started out as a human archetype.
