There's an fps unlocker out. Quick test shows it to work wonderfully. It also greatly reduced my render latency making the game even more responsive beyond what you get with the fps increase.

Magrit's mostly just too tanky for low-level players and forces them to grind

I don't buy that, because I beat him at level 25 playing it straight and on foot, and it was still incredibly challenging. It certainly helped to level up and gather some better equipment, but that wasn't the deciding factor of the fight now that I think of it, prior to my initial reaction to beating him last night. Of course, you could come back at level 40 or something and that might be a different story, but I don't entirely believe that was the intention.

I will agree with Jinn here. Magrit really had his bases covered well and switched his attack and movement speed around in a fluid fashion, forcing you to adapt. A proper tango boss, in my opinion. I didn't find there to be anything cheap about him... well, I could never avoid those quick dagger stabs he did sometimes.

I ran into him pretty early on, like around 15? No spells, default vagabond gear. Came back also around mid 20s, got a few ash summons, weapon +2, and probably most importantly got the faith fireball. Very noticeable difference, took two tries the second time around.

Yeah, but you summoned the NPC next to the fog gate, right?

Found my first magic staff and waist lantern!

From the nomad merchant after you beat Godric.

Did that every time I fought him besides the initial one.

I don't think Margit's a bad boss, but he's tedious to beat at low levels, and I think he's designed to make the player explore more.

Magrit is a bitch of a boss if you try to face him straight, but I don't think he's exactly what you describe there, particularly in regards to patterns. There are some patterns, but part of why he's so difficult is the way he so fluidly shifts in and out of patterns, countering the player in a very natural way, thus making it feel more like a real fight than a lot of past Fromsoft bosses. It's actually really good, and adds another layer of challenge. I think the thing that myself and a lot of veteran players forgot was some of the tools we were taught several hours before. Ashes of War and counters are much more important than they initially seem.

And then of course there is the mounted strategy that Thac0 mentioned earlier in the thread, which hadn't even crossed my mind. That apparently makes the fight much easier, which makes perfect sense because it tends to defang intense combos that enemies can pull off if you're moving at foot speed. Not sure if I like that or will utilize such tactics for unmounted humanoid enemies myself, but something to keep in mind the next time you meet an extremely difficult enemy with a suite of nearly unforgeable combos and counters.

Done under 4 min with sorcery , ...Summon the pets , whatever you want imps , wolves are good , medusa probably best and tankiest, can also interupt bosses. Then just shoot it with glindstone stuff , most flasks for mana

I think we're essentially in agreement on this, but have a slightly different perspective on how much that matters. Obviously our approach to the fight was very different too, so that is the biggest difference I think. I think you're saying that you noticed how much more damage you were doing, which I did too. But at the halfway point in that fight is when it truly begins, and can only imagine how much more hits you would be able to land with another character for the boss to be focused on.

Yes, I realize how much more manageable the fight with ranged weapons/magic and summons would be. I should have clarified - fighting him in melee.

iam running elden ring on my laptop - constant 27-30fps no stutter at 1080p. Not getting 60fps even in low settings. How do i get 60fps in this game?

What are your vsync settings? The game doesn't offer any, but you can force it off in the GPU control panel for the program. Assuming no bottleneck, it should only lock to 30 if you have your vsync set to half, afaik.

Also, try out the fps unlocker I linked above.

Hmm, noticed that faith Heals do damage to enemies. Was this something that existed in previous games? Kind of cool, like a mini Wrath of the Gods.

the one near a non-poison swamp with crystals everywhere? You can get there even without fighting Margit.

Oh yup, didn't know that area was accessible. Starting to think only the boss-specific locations are walled off and that most of the open world is... open.

Nothing in these games works on that logic. I've written a post about it here.

If nothing works on visual inference then how did I know to avoid the giant golden knight? Or the giant a little to the west? Why was I apprehensive to pull the impressive spear-wielding dude at the first outpost? How did I know that bats, wolves, and regular swordsman were my speed? I'm just taking issue with the idea of players whining that they got trashed in a starting area because they didn't think about the obvious visual cues.

I don't like re-stocking and I don't like crafting. I think the superior system would be having all the consumable items work like Estus flasks. Perhaps with a few tweaks like extending your supply of arrows being purchasable at a merchant.
I think I touched upon the same thing a few months before release. Yes, that would certainly be the preferable way to handle things, but that carries its own set of problems.

I like that they at least have included pots as a rechargeable type of item, though I think I understand why they didn't do the same for arrows by giving you a quiver - it would likely have allowed people to cheese the game too much. Then again, that could also have been balanced out.

But yes, in principle I agree, all consumables should be similar to how Estus flasks work - doubly so since I'm one of those people that tends to hoard items to be used for that "perfect" moment that never comes, so I just end up with a lot of useless junk clogging the inventory.
Sekiro did it best by having regular consumables (like anti-burn powders, damage-boosing sugars, etc), but also giving you infinite-use items later into the game (headless-sugars, anti-burn gourds, etc). Something similar could potentially work with arrows too, maybe a magic quiver that takes a ring/talisman slot, and consumes mana or hp to recharge.

I much prefer Demon's Souls bosses, gimmicky as they are.
I think some Demon's Souls-style puzzle/gimmick bosses would have fit in really well with this game as the challenge at the end of minor dungeons. Leave the 100% high stakes combat stuff for "story" bosses.

The game doesn't feel directionless to me. It feels like a much larger Dark Souls -- remember how confusing that game was when you first played it, with no idea where to go? How many dumbasses strolled on down toward the catacombs and got buttfucked by those reanimating skeletons before realizing they were in the wrong place? Compared to DS1, this game feels more forgiving in that regard.

I just beat the Tree Sentinel with my sword and board Vagabond. I probably tried 30 times in the beginning, went off and leveled up, came back with a +2 Longsword, and took him after a few tries.

Potentially file under "mad because bad" but Margit is not a very fun boss. The constant delayed swings (this has been a problem since DS3 tbf), the attacks which look designed to be punished but actually link into combos (especially that one where he attacks with the daggers if you try to punish from the front) and the ranged dagger attack to block healing all make it pretty obnoxious. I get that he's obviously meant to be literally gatekeeping content as a way of saying "go explore the rest of the map" but this feels like a fight that I will never find enjoyable.

Man, that post summarize how expectations are a bitch and can be the complete opposite from player to player. For me, Margit is easily the best "first" boss from has ever made, even better than Father Gascoigne. And the reasons are exactly what you list as obnoxious: delayed attacks, openings that sometimes turn into combos, punishment to your healings and so on. This is the kinda shit that made me fall in love with souls games in the first place, so it makes me very happy that this is the introduction to the story boss in ER.

I like the idea of being able to summon enemies to help you, but the fact that you can only do it in specific locations is super fucking lame
that being said I did easily beat Magrit by summoning a dog that causes bleed and just letting him bleed out

Please tell me what level you guys beat Margit at. Because I definitely went in underleveled and without any weapon upgrades and spent over 4 hours in there. Absolutely pointless but damn satisfying in the end when I finally pulled it off. Those 12k runes put me from lvl 13 to 19. If you consider the average Souls boss generally amounts to 2-3 levels...

lvl 20 weapon +3. it took me 30 minutes.

From really did nail the game's difficulty. It simultaneously is both more welcoming for new players (boo, scrubs need to be bullied) and maintains the trademark unforgiving nature of previous games.

Every new area feels fresh and distinct, but most importantly, dangerous.

I'm impressed. PC performance issues aside, this is a triumph.

Refunded the game after a couple of hours. Going to buy it again on the bargain bin much later.

Major issues:

1. They completely borked shield-play. The guard counter is mindlessly easy, just block and hit after, feels like Bethesda-level action gameplay. The parry on the other hand, I have no idea what they did to it, but it doesn't work. I tried it on those starting undead with really slow attacks, and could not land a single parry. Did some google searching, and apparently no one else can consistently land parries either. Seems like they added some other bullshit mechanic to it even worse than delayed parry windup frames from DaS2-3.

So yeah, basically hold shield up or keep rolling without end. Boring...

2. It's too similar to Dark Souls games. Sekiro actually felt different somewhat, and with Elden Ring being open-world, I was hoping they would try new things. But it doesn't feel that way, at least at the start.
