There's a massive gap in power between weapons that use somber smithing stones and ones that use normal smithing stones. Since somber weapons only require 10 stones and can be +9 before you hit the capital, and normal smithing stone weapons require 150 or so and won't be +24 until the final dungeon of the game.

I also think enemies in this games are bloated, but you're prolly making it even harder on yourself using a spear for sure. I've tried all sorts of weapons in some of the souls (not really had the patience to do that in ER) and they always come across as a very wrong choice, if you're into the monotone moveset (god, how I hate those), rapiers/estocs are similar, albeit with less reach, and have far more damage potential (in terms of how much you'll get out of spamming your R1 when the enemy has downtime, not comparing hit-by-hit).

Uninstalled the game after reaching Mountaintops of the Giants.

Game became absolutely intolerable with each new step towards endgame. Enemies one or two shotting you with 45 VIG and 40% PHYS DMG REDUCTION, but also having like 5000-8000 HP at the same time. Absolute shit game design that for whatever reason has been sticking with the Souls series after Dark Souls 1. Game had a lot of stuff going for it for the first 30 hours or so until you noticed the patterns of the open world design, and then everything became foreseeable and the world lost most of its charm (most, because some areas you could discover were still pretty unique and deviated from the usual catacombs, and so on).

And I don't even want to talk about the MP with its constant freezes, crashes, and how they completely buchtered PvP invasions.

If I had to rate every Souls game I've played, it would look like this:

Demon's Souls = Dark Souls >>>>>>>>>>> Dark Souls 3 = Dark Souls 2 SOFTS > Elden Ring >∞> Dark Souls 2

Sometimes I think that we are playing a different game when I read a post like this, lol I was one/two shooting every enemy with my weapon from the moment I got Ramadan great sword to the end of the game and first hit would always break their poise if there were more than 3 enemies in the room I would use weapon art and clear them out are you running with starter weapon or what?

Have been running a +20 Keen Partisane.

Seems weak.

It was completely fine for Leyndell. And if the game wants me to use weapons that deal 1500 HP R2 attacks just to get rid of trash mobs in late game areas, than the game can fuck right off.

I find it fascinating that Ranni has become beloved while it seems like Melina, the poster girl, is rather unpopular. I wonder if Fromsoftware intended for that, or if there was some sort change of plans during development.

Melina is just uninteresting as an npc, even Alexander the pot has more personality. You can't even blame it on her appearance because Melina is quite cute, she's just had utter shite writing.

Ultimately she died the way she lived. Pointlessly.

I think it's because Ranni has a better and more interesting backstory, and gives you a much better ending alternative than the super lame "standard" ending.

Meanwhile Melina is just... there? Talks to you a few times and fucks off.

I didn't go digging for lore, so I dunno, maybe there's more to unpack there.

Aren't those tiny golden trees supposed to have golden seeds under them? I'm not finding any...

I like to roleplay different builds in Souls games, and it always had been working fine so far. I forgot to mention that I also used the Highland Axe with the same weapon strength in my current build, and the dmg output (even though it was stronger) was just not noticeable in the late game areas. Like I said before, if the game forces me to use specific R2 weapon arts to clear endgame areas, then this game is just not worth my time.

I like Melina a lot. I like that she goes on a journey with you but she's willing to go against you and threaten you and leave you, and I think the moment at the fire giants forge was great. I believe the option to talk to Melina is bugged though, as it often times won't show up at places where she has dialogue, thankfully in my first playthrough I got the majority of her dialogue. Also the game appears to have a lot of cut content and I think it's likely that some Melina content was cut.

If you don't want to update your gear and build, that's on you.

Pretty much this. Part of the fun of all Souls games for me was trying different builds and seeing they were all viable in different ways. Having to look for specific flavors of cheese to beat the game is anathema to Souls for me.

But then I have a feeling this shit will change considerably through updates. (that's why I'm rushing with my Bleed build. They'll nerf it for sure)

Oh and fuck these armor aesthetics. My bandit can't find a simple thief cloth, everything looks taken out of a power rangers movie. FUCK.

This is like the one game where they probably could've cut even more content, sold it as DLC, and people would've been fine with it.
Areas and dungeons weren't cut, just an ending or two and npc quest lines and dialogue.
The strange thing in the case of NPCs is that it's mostly the early area NPCs that seem to have no proper followups. After literally everyone in the roundtable leave and die in their questlines, with only your smith and spirit ash upgrade remaining there for gameplay reason (and it's implied they'll just let themselves die there in the future), Nepheli still sits in the roundtable whining about her dad.

There's a faction in the game I suspect also had cut content about them, because I find it strange how literally no NPC ever talk of them despite their importance in the plot, their omnipresence in the world and their one storyline boss fight. The shitskins! There's many of them, and they're not just random enemies, they are apostles of the Gloam Eyed Queen, whose aim was to slay gods. As far as I know, no NPC ever mention their existence, they're just not talked about. Item description of Black Flame type spells says the Black Flame used to be able to slay gods before the rune of death was sealed. Maliketh also fought and won against the Gloam Eyed Queen.
Two of the shitskins can be found around or in Divine Towers too. But as far as the game world is concerned, it's like the faction is just decoration.

Okay now what the fuck do you do with Ulcerated Tree Spirit. You can't even see anything half the time. Holy shit these bosses are some real winners!

I just might have to throw this thing in the garbage and play some Dark Souls 2 or Bloodborne. What a fuckin joke these bosses are...

To me a lot of the unexplored factions and/or (demi)gods just seemed like DLC bait to me. The NPC quests that abruptly end (Nepheli), outright disappear (Patches and Diallos) or leave key items behind that can't be used (Alexander) are the real mystery. As a clueless player you have no idea if you're missing steps, if this is genuinely cut content or if the quests just are bugged and can't be completed until something gets patched in.
