What's the problem? Did you just discover for the first time with that video that this is an action-RPG?

As has been brought up countless times in this thread - and is fairly common knowledge about the game for years now - the combat is designed by the guy who worked on Dragon's Dogma and DMC V's combat systems.

To be quite honeslt it looks very boring. Passive enemies with bloated healthbars that you spam magic attacks on. Seems very like a decade old game, rather than something contemporary.
FFXV and Forspoken were utter garbage, but they felt like modern garbage. I mean it will certainly be better than either of thos games, but it just seems tired looking. Press R2 to break the metal gate.

Still can't agree. The only enemies in that clip that take any considerable amount of time at all are the heavies and the boss.
The other fodder goes down in like 5-10 seconds. Don't get too focused on the HP bar at the beginning, it cuts by 60%+ at soon as stagger kicks in.

That said agree on the passivity. Makes for a very jarring moment in the video, because the ironblood heavy fights feel too drawn out without threat and then suddenly the one against the akashic champion nearly empties your entire HP bar. And the Akashic Champion is technically a lower level AS WELL. Too stark a contrast.

Of course there's some own gameplay needed to properly evaluate.

If there's one thing I'm already sure I'm not a fan off, it's the shining item orbs. I know there's some this will appeal to, but I like picking up items myself, damnit.

Combat looks fine to me, it is pretty much what you'd expect from any action game, but they really overdid the particle effects. Sometimes there is so much shit on screen that you can barely see what is going on.

All said, I'll know for sure if combat shit or not in exactly 14 days.

I saw you can jump on enemies just like Devil May Cry at around 7:36 in the video, is called "combo stomping". Combat seems pretty good so far, I could see the game being decently challenging at higher difficulties if is true that it will be harder than DMD of DMC V, not at the level of 3 or Ninja Gaiden but still decent.

Yeah, maybe its the effects heavy attacks that make everything seem so drawn out. They seem very elaborate for early game moves that you use almost every enemy. Multiple times.

Any word about a dedicated dodge button in this? Or should I assume the same way as DMC V, lock-on + jump + direction?

Demo releases tonight. Reportedly the first two hours of the game with the ability to carry over progress.

That's one nice thing that Squenix has been doing lately, providing demos for at least several titles so you can check it out and then just roll your progress if you pick it up after. It's been seeming like demos are starting to become a thing again for gaming in general which is great.

Wonder what 2 hours means in the context. I'd assume the first 2 hours are mostly cutscenes and linear sequences, not sure if the hub even comes into play in that time. May be like the demo that some previewers experienced, beginning + after you get dropped into a more open area without story to fuck around in.

Anyway there's a whole thing around it.

Brought streamers in for internet kool kreditz. Hopefully they shut the fuck up. I want to hear from Takai, Maehiro and Soken. Not Maximilian Dood sperging of all people.

Well, it's supposed to be a return to form for Final Fantasy, which based on what I've seen, I'd suggest it should get you roughly half the way through the introductory cutscene, a la Final Fantasy XIII. :smug:

It's funny, but I hadn't considered that. It actually could be something like that, given JRPGs in general and FF in particular. Hopefully it'll give fans a taste of how it actually plays and not just the part of things that's like: you have one attack and gameplay sucks because you haven't hit hour 36 yet (31 hours are cutscenes) where you earn your second ability.

I mean it applies to most FF's since FFVII. VII had midgard, VIII had Balamb Garden, IX had Alexandria and the Forest afterwards, X had a long sequence until leaving with the boat, XII was the shortest but it still took a bit until leaving Rabanastre.

XV dropped you immediately into its world, and lord knows that game would have benefitted from a more linear opening in Insomnia to actually make you care about shit.

Im just thinking logically story wise as well. First you have the whole opening in his youth, then you probably have a mission or two introducing you after the timeskip, there's a chance you take down Garuda as well before the first real area. That's probably an hour and a half at least covered.

I generally agree which is why imo FF ended with VI, but YMMV.

Anyway, hopefully this is cool for those who've been looking forward to it. If nothing else, Squenix is at least confident enough to let you check it out which says a lot for such a big money bet. Like, they've had demos for many of their games in the last few years, but I don't think they did for Forspoken, did they? Or that shitty live service flop one. Babylon's Fall?

They had one for Forspoken. Comparatively it wasn't really storyfocused though or meant as a carry over to the main game.

It gave you a short introduction about the story (Apart from giving a very accurate insight in how shit Frey's personality is), then dropped you into the game. It was as shit of course as the game is.

I just want to try the combat, if I'm honest. It's not a day one either way, but good combat could sway me to get it at some point.

Yeah, guy is a trained public speaker and does well across everything. Body language, how to structure sentences and words, emphasis, voice. All there.

Fuck I'm not even sure its that special. But its such an improvement over usual game industry tragedy that I'm seriously impressed.

Platinum Games co-developed on XVI led by the director of Astral Chain.

Edit: The Kingdom Hearts team helped out as well.
