Programming languages don't accept ’ as a valid type of apostrophe. Maybe it's a Mac thing.

It's called a typographic apostrophe.

The Microsoft Windows code page CP1252 (sometimes incorrectly called ANSI or ISO-Latin) contains the typographic apostrophe at 0x92. Due to "smart quotes" in Microsoft software converting the ASCII apostrophe to this value, other software makers have been effectively forced to adopt this as a de facto convention. For instance, the HTML5 standard specifies that this value is interpreted as this character from CP1252.[109] Some earlier non-Microsoft browsers would display a '?' for this and make web pages composed with Microsoft software somewhat hard to read.

He was fired, dumbass. He was the lead writer on Stormlands, and Obsidian fired him when Microsoft canceled that project.

Because they had money issues.
More because they had no project to put him on. Ziets the writer wasn't a good fit for any of the games they were working on after Stormlands was canceled. Also, I have a theory that Feargus's clashes with Ziets during Dungeon Siege 3's development was another reason for Ziets being in the cross hairs during those layoffs.

In the early days, there were lots of folks who had both skills. Almost all the interactive fiction guys. And outside of that, Mechner, Garriott, Ron Gilbert, the crew that made Starflight... just off the top of my head. I mean, they may not have been like Umberto Eco level humanists, but they made games with rewarding narratives.
