Playing Alyx without [a VR headset] doesn't make sense.
I find it very hard lately to find decent single player FPS games.
That's a separate problem that has nothing to do with this game. Just because you can't find a game you like doesn't make it a good idea to butcher this one.
But I am not butchering this one. You come to that conclusion yourself.
I won't be playing this one because I do not have a VR headset and because I understand that that mod can't make HL Alyx play like a regular FPS.
If the mouse has to replace the VR controls that is not a problem, but if the rest of the game is difficult to play without VR then it would be a waste of money for me to purchase.

I would love to try HL:A with a VR headset but I can't afford one so I hope that that non VR mod gets finished even if it makes the game a rather standard FPS.
My issue is somewhat worse. I could probably afford the headset, but I absolute do not have the room to make a "VR playing area" where I have my PC desk.
Sometimes I considered the option anyway to experience one of the so called "sitting experiences" (EVE Valkyrie, Elite Dangerous, that kind of stuff). But for anything like ALYX that sort of demands for you to move around in a relatively large area I don't have a solution.

Not needed. I don't have cartwheeling space either. As long as you can stand in one spot and swing your arms around without hitting stuff, you have adequate room for Standing VR. It's 100% fine.

I play in quite a small space and have room to dodge, parry and block when playing Blade & Sorcery. Just need to get a feel for boundaries.

Must admit I did punch walls a couple of times when first starting.

I would just have called this Half Life 3 and be done with it. Since it's in VR, I'm sure fans would have been content.
Missed opportunity, Gaben!

Well, ending of Alyx implies they still want to make a full blown HL3.

Whether it happens in our lifetime? Who knows.

I haven't entirely discounted the possibility yet, I guess. But living up to the hype might be almost impossible by now.
So why even try.

Better to do a thing than live with the fear of it.

At the very least it puts it all to bed and stops people bitching at them forever more.

Well, I don't doubt Valve is "working at things", in general.

The problem with them is always if they are ever happy enough with the result to:
1- stick to the end
2- actually ship something.

That's the problem with their chaotic management structure. They need people cracking whips and keeping teams on point instead of everyone working on whatever the hell they want to.

That's a problem for you, not for them.

Valve already won. They could buy and sell every other developer out there for a laugh. There's no reason for them to crack any whips, or make it hard on their people in any way. Of course they're going to take their time with projects and only release things they think are perfect. Wouldn't you?

Gameplay Premise
When Alyx Vance is caught on the wrong side of the Quarantine Zone, she has only her wits, guns, and Russell to help her get back to City 17. But it won't be easy: the Combine have her trapped at one of their checkpoints, and she'll need to manage her resources and use clever tactics to escape...or stick around for some target practice.

Scavenge
There are plenty of resources scattered around the area, be it resin, ammo, health, or weapons caches. If you look hard enough, you may find some well-hidden resources that could give you a leg-up in your fight.

Upgrade
Fortunately there's a Combine fabricator located nearby. Use it to your advantage if you can catch a break. Go from only carrying Russell's old pistol to wielding a fully kitted-out arsenal of your choosing.

Improvise
You will inevitably run low on resources from time to time, but there are plenty of opportunities for improvisation.

Survive
This will be a challenging fight. The odds are against you and you've been backed into a corner. Use your experience from the campaign to get an edge over the Combine.
Gameplay Features
  • An hour-long campaign with non-linear objectives; choose your upgrade and weapon progression route.
  • An open arena with randomized enemy spawns locations, signified by an alarm and a Combine forcefield.
  • Randomized ammo and resin spawns to vary each playthrough.
  • Deployable tripmines; place them strategically to improve your chances.
  • A high fidelity environment to fight in, meant to emulate the quality of the main campaign.

Also Levitation is releasing later this year.

No amount of modding will ever make HL:A enjoyable on desktop. This is one instance where I'd say it's actually better to watch someone else in VR play through it than using a desktop mod. Unless you're physically disabled or so broke that you can't, go to an electronics store, pick up a Quest 2, play through Alyx within the 30 day return policy and return it.

People telling me I'm enjoying my games wrong are my favourite kind of people.
I'm also playing Underrail on classic btw.

So. Instead of talking about it I have started playing this thing and... I'm sure it's completable ? But it feels off still, like that section of DNF 2001. Movement is weird. Bugs everywhere. Gunplay is abhorrent.

But those are issues that can be fixed. So who knows ?
