Is Dark Souls overrated?

I won't. I'm the only competent person in this thread. My death would not be meaningless... it would be disastrous.

More like you're the only faggot in this thread and your death would bring us closer to the realization of Hitler's dream.

YES!
Yes, most definitely. It is like Undertale or watching people play Minecraft on youtube. The fucking idiots got wind this game was awesome and everyone who is a fervent and devout follower of what is hip and in at the moment all had to prove how hip and in they are by becoming fanboys.

People who think for themselves tend to have a different opinion of this game.

One ironic thing to come out of the risible fanbase was the fact that the majority blindly followed the sunlight covenant with its mindless co-op boss farming, shitty chalk memes, and pernicious activity in the story (perfectly mirroring the personalities of the players involved), while true bros played darkwraith, making the game harder but more satisfying (in most cases) for everyone else, and enjoyed the best ending. Nice little meta narrative told directly through player interactions.

Diablo 1 is better in every aspect than Derp Souls, which is a so-so action game.

Yeah it did third person melee way better.
So I hear fanboys of Dark Souls can be pretty annoying. What about the fact that damn near every single person who hates it on internet seems to spew nothing but edgy horseshit about it?

Why do the screenshots look like something pulled from Dark Souls?
Because everyone compare Dork Sulz to everything.
Action TPP? How does it compare to DS?
Difficulty? Dork Sulz.

It's like people don't know or ignore fact that there were difficulty games before Dork Sulz. Must be curse of "Press X to win" or somethin.

This does annoy me. Dark Souls is a very good game, but pick up a game from the '90s and you'll likely find many similarities. Dark Souls is basically an evolution of the old school console action/RPG. Although there's similarities to some PC titles too like Severance: Blade of Darkness, but it's ultimately a Japanese console game at its core.

And yeah, it is the fault of the modern industry for the lack of perception in many Dark Souls fanboys. I can't think of one mainstream game even close to hardcore levels of difficulty from 2006 onward on any platform aside from this game. Shit used to be standard. In 1992, even Disney games were fucking hardcore. Generally speaking, consoles were more a test of leet skillz, and PC games more a test of intellect, now it's neither. Now you have to put a game on the hardest difficulty right off the bat to get something even close to acceptable.

also not one person has mentioned king's field yet.

That's probably because it isn't that great. I appreciate the high difficulty, but when it comes to first person RPGs you're better off with LGS' games. Hell on the matter of combat alone you're probably better off with Looking Glass. Even Ultima Underworld. Heck I'd prefer Bethesda's Morrowind. Sorry, but I found King's Field to be a little underwhelming, but it did have its few charms. Dark Souls on the other hand can stand up there among the best. Nonetheless, I'd like FROM to make another King's Field, but only with the promise that it will be a logical evolution of the old.

But how they should evolve KF combat? Because I agree - Morrowind have better one even though KF one looks good on paper.

Going the Dark Messiah or Chivalry route and iterating seems to be the obvious choice. Yeah, I don't actually mind Morrowind's combat, I have no problem with accuracy influenced by stats. I just think it wasn't executed that well and in hindsight I could do it better without ditching the stat-based system entirely, but that's easy to say I guess.

Many people know it and have played it. It's a useful reference point. "How does it compare to Battletoads in difficulty?" is all well and good but none will have played it so the answer is "I don't know" and it's in a different genre anyway. Before Dark Souls the reference point may very well have been Ninja Gaiden or DMC3 etc.

Can't think of a single title from the 90s that shares much of anything with it but I bet you mean some side-scroller/platformer.

Ninja Gaiden 2 is from 2008 and is pretty mainstream (over one million sold).

I disagree, I put PoE on the hardest difficulty and still crush everything without trying (Barbarian.)
(The superior type of RPG! *giggle*)

Dark Souls 1 is what Diablo should have been.

Rogue with pretty graphix is what Diablo should have been. The game was good for what it was and the atmosphere was killer so i'm not complaining but still. Decline lol and all that.

I read this part in a nasaled voice for some reason
