From quickly browsing listings for homes in Irvine it appears that the median price is around $1m-1.5m (and the consensus is that it’s currently a buyer’s market). So, yeah, if he prioritized that Josh could definitely do it on a 30yr (or probably even 15yr) mortgage, but it’s still fucking nuts that that is the market.

Edit: It’s also worth noting that (in non-megacorps) benefits, including retirement plans, tend to be the purview of HR, and given that Obsidian is alleged to have awful, awful HR…

I spent all of my money on a rare bike frame, only 28 units produced in Bhutan in 1952, and now I can't afford retirement. I hate capitalism.

Western "socialists" in a nutshell really. Temporarily embarrassed upper middle class bougies who want to displace the blame for their retarded consumption decisions onto something else.

IHaveHugeNick Sums pretty much every single one of his tweets about money and difficulty retiring perfectly. Holy fuck those are hilarious.

I mean shit, why is he looking in California for ANYTHING? I live in Jersey. I'm looking for retirement land in places like PA and Montana, 100+ acre lots only. Prices for undeveloped but hooked to the grid are 300K+ for 150 acre lot in PA. That's with access to state hunting lands right nearby too and a nice town within ten miles. Gotta see about well water and drilling, but if I buy it I get mineral and coal rights too, though coal and fracking are primarily in Northern Pennsylvania.

At least he was honest here about his inevitable retirement to Wisconsin

That's why I bought a house in Wisconsin in 2005 (my parents live in it). If all else fails (and it probably will), I'll have that to fall back on someday.

Why does he think everything will fail? He's a very known developer working on his own personal project for a company who recently got bought by an even bigger company who, according to them, actually doesn't care that much about what they do. He's not running out of money or jobs any time soon, and he seems to be in good physical shape.

Sawyer keeps claiming that he is oppressed by the guy on Monopoly cover, while the truth is that
...he is the guy on the monopoly cover.
Sawyer is a 1%er. A family needs an income of $420k a year to be in the top 1%.

The upper-middle class/lower-upper class(whatever you want to call it) rarely ever think of themselves as rich despite being some of the richest people in the world.

I happen to live in PA, I bought a bit of land and a house in a more rural part of it when I was younger, I already paid it off. When I see people paying thousands of dollars a month to rent a fucking pillbox it's astounding. Only thing I pay for now is property taxes :argh:

Land and housing is cheap in most of USA if you stay away from coastal and metro areas.

I think he's a dead man walking once Feargus isn't around to protect him any longer. Can't see him getting hired at any other company, especially at his current Feargus's Pal salary.

Of course affluent people are going to seethe when only the ultra-wealthy can afford to buy property in the area he works. However, the regulations that keep property values ridiculously high in his area are a result of the policies of the very politicians he supports, so I can't sympathize.

He could have almost anything he wants if he just made investments. Money is dynamic, just throw what one can save into an S&P500 ETF and leave it there for years. Or be smart, entail some risk, and put it in some well researched stocks. But he's buying tiny cars, vans, bikes, and bitching about capitalism.

Many years ago he did mention that he has stocks, but he never pays attention to them.

Buying real estate is a money cheat code in the American economy so long as the area has a reasonable approach to keeping out blacks and similar undesirables. It's ridiculous how much it appreciates for doing absolutely nothing, especially with Bidenomics. I understand Josh's predicament having lived in Silicon Valley (not Irvine, but more expensive), but he also lived in Irvine during a time in which he could have bought real estate and easily made more money than he did at his job just keeping current on his mortgage and not letting the house fall down. He is now priced out: he's fucked because of the logic of how the American economy and our banking system works.

The majority of Americans are homeowners, and the very rich all have extensive real estate investments. American politicians through various programs guarantee that housing prices overall only go in one direction: up. They will do literally everything including suspending the concept of the savings account or certificate of deposit to ensure that the price continues to frogmarch upwards. Owning a house is basically part of your compensation for being in the American workforce, and it's often one of the most lucrative and least risky parts of that compensation package. If you are a renter, you are on the wrong side of the trade, and in markets like Irvine you will just see your life get shabbier and shabbier despite being no more productive than your neighbor because you do not own property. Owning a house in a good area is the equivalent of a $million+ pension, thanks to how the government, local busybodies, and the Fed rig the market to keep the bourgeois pigs fat and happy.

Maybe seeing CA get completely shitcanned despite being a "founder" and "OG" made him realize he's only one bad day of pissing off the real bosses away from having his health insurance forms shredded. :M

Right, I'm saying seeing CA get treated that way despite his original status in the company maybe makes him feel not very stable.

Ah, sorry I saw CA and thought “California” not “Chris Avellone”.

But I would be surprised if Josh had much anxiety over MCA’s downfall.

Yeah, I don't see Josh as having any anxiety about MCA's downfall (we need a meme for that). Rather, the way I see it is that the two never got along and Josh probably saw him as a rival of some kind at the least, so seeing him gone was a good thing for him. And if they disliked each other as much as I've been lead to believe over the years, there's a good chance he actually smiled quite a bit seeing MCA treated that way.

Honestly, what are the odds that he poisoned the well with MCA? In terms of Obsidian and how the company treated him, especially at the end? Even if people say that didn't happen, I've always suspected it. I mean, once MCA was no longer around, the spotlight was on Josh by and large, and he became some sort of uber super star overnight, the guy who could save Obshitian, etc. Really? This bland nigga?

Zeriel Use MCA not CA when talking about Mr. Chris Avellone. That way we know. I too thought it was California for some reason.

My bad. Pretty sure I was just copying someone else who used CA and assumed by context people can get it. That or 35 year old boomer laziness setting in...

But I still maintain as someone who has been in shitty work environments that seeing "higher ups" or "old hands" get decapitated without a second thought is very sobering. Doesn't matter how you feel about them. It demonstrates how the management feels about staff.
