We are looking for a writer to join the team to work on Larian's next project. You will be tasked with not only writing engaging dialogs and characters, but also the creation of storylines, plots, and other narrative undertakings. You are very much at home in the world of (tabletop) RPGs. You’ve played and you’re passionate about (C)RPGs. You know what makes games like Original Sin 2 tick and you’d like to join us in our efforts to do even better. You have a natural understanding of what separates good from stale characters; vibrant from boring dialog.

Responsibilities
  • Dialog writing
  • Character creation and development
  • Quest design
  • Story design
Requirements
  • Bachelor/Master degree in English language/literature, Game Design, Creative Writing, or any other relevant degree
  • Native speaker of English (or native speaker level)
  • A profound understanding of RPG games
  • A love for fantasy and science fiction
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Willing to perform a number of tests so we can see if you are the right person
Bonus
  • Experience in the gaming industry, especially RPGs

Narrative Designer

We are looking for a narrative designer: someone who is intimately familiar with the process of story creation and its execution, as well as plot and character development on a grand scale. You will be tasked with working on the narrative design and implementation of our next project, linking it with our other RPG systems, and act as a mediator between the writing team and other departments such as art and code. You can critically read and edit dialog for its consistency with the overall gaming experience. You have the proven ability to read and understand 50+ pages in an hour. You have a deep understanding of what makes Original Sin 2 tick. You understand that it takes many iterations to make something good and have no problems with changing course or redoing things.

Responsibilities
  • Narrative design
  • Character creation and development
  • Quest design
  • Story design
  • Story implementation
  • RPG systems implementation
  • Dialog editing
  • World building
  • Liaison between teams
Requirements
  • At least 3 years of experience in the gaming industry. You have previously helped develop RPGs
  • Bachelor/Master degree in English language/literature, Game Design, Creative Writing, or any other relevant degree
  • Excellent English skills
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • A love for fantasy and science fiction
  • A profound understanding of RPG games and systems
  • Willing to perform a number of tests so we can see if you are the right person
Bonus
  • You have worked on major RPG projects
  • You are familiar with tabletop game (systems). You’ve played or served as game master.

Did they let some writers go, or they want to stack more writers for the next project?

Also what former Focus Home producer Michael Douse do at Larian? Director of Publishing.

And what Director of Publishing do at a one-game-in-three-years company like Larian? It's a secret.

Finally, they're moving away from Divinity and toward some new IP. As much as I liked Divine Divinity and both D:OS, I want to see something new from them instead of just another sequel or classic fantasy rpg.

FYI, they also wrote "Fantasy writing and sci-fi writing experience is a plus" when they're looking for writers in 2015. Well, I think it's not hard to imagine they would stay away from fantasy for a new IP.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Sci-fi with a turn-based combat system a la D:OS would be really sweet. As long as they don't "balance" it even more

Judging from the job openings it seems that Larian has realised that more writing does not equate to better writing.

This is only true if they've parted ways with half the writing staff they already have. +M

Avellone wrote over half of Torment himself, Bioware games are full of writers.
So what is your point? (Very) small writing teams generally write better content than larger writing teams? I'd only agree if the smaller writing team has very talented writers, but the Crème de la Crème of writers tend to write novels and not content for video games.

A larger writing team should produce better content. It is a rule of thumb to go by.

Indeed.

Yet it still doesn't disprove the rule that larger writing teams generally produce better content.
