Giving Ian an SMG is an infamously bad idea. He loves shooting people in the back. The desert eagle suits him better.

I disagree. On my first playthrough I thought Junktown was probably the most memorable location after the Hub and probably the Glow. Perhaps MacGyver had something to do with it. Junktown doesn't suffer from a lack of content either unlike many of the other locations in the game.

Yeah. It benefits from not having some of the Hub's weirder shit, like the Thieves' Guild. It's a very well-balanced place. If I think Fallout as a franchise, I think of either the Glow or Junktown.

It would've been legendary if PR hadn't messed with the ending slides for the location.

Ah yes, that game that (thankfully) tanked horribly... However, nowadays the developer would only had to spend a few milions into marketing and the game would become an instant success.

Junktown is great, it's the first really memorable Fallout location. There's lots of stuff going on as well, like the hostage situation, the Skulz, Gizmi and Kilian, Doc Morbid's secret, etc.

You know what's really marked Fallout forever into my psyche? This:
I had just shot the assassin, and Killian told me do to something or whatever, but I was younger and my English bad at the time, so I went there with Gizmo, insulted him and then we exchanged speeding lead projectiles propeled by chemicals.
In the end, Gizmo and his goons were all dead after many tries, I was bloodied as fuck. I looted his shit like the conqueror I thought I was, and then I talked with Lars. You know what he said to me?

Essentially, "Thanks for shooting Gizmo for us. However, although we knew he was evil, you had no proof of his crimes. Thank you, but its best if you leave Junktown, and never return."

Some time later, I won the game and went back to the Vault.

Sorry, you're a hero. And you have to leave...

NOT THIS SHIT AGAAAAIN!!

You can also keep Tandi as a mediocre fighter as long as you don't return to Shady Sands.
Just steal her knife and put a Ripper or Power Fist into her inventory instead. She's also immune to laser fire iirc or at least the laser doors in the Mariposa Base.

I can't puncture Ian without the SMG, its a hilariously iconic thing.
I think all party members perform the best if you give them a weapon other than what they claim is their best weapon.

Ian says he wants SMGs, but should be given .223 pistol, or Power Fist, or Ripper.

Tycho says he wants shotguns, but should be given sniper rifle, or Power Fist, or Ripper.

Katja says she is best with throwing weapons and SMGs, but should be given a Power Fist, or Ripper.

I have to say, Junktown is a strange adventure hub. I don't even remember ever losing an eye to the doctor before. And the Skum Pitt shoot out was tkind of unexpected. I finished a chat with Neal, the bar owner and BANG! Dead dude on the ground. It's scripting like these that makes Junktown memorable. After that, I can't help but feel paranoid at every corner, a reverse of the boredom I felt upon entering it. Marvelous stuff.

I hope the Hub's going to be more of these. Await the next update in like...8 hours or something. Still stuck in the office issuing payroll.

:salute:

Great read so far. Good narrative. The losing eye thing was something I encountered everytime. In fact I didn't even know that it's possible to meet him above ground...

I would end up resizing it to 640 480 anyway to conserve loading time. I dislike big screenshots. So it makes no difference.

11 - Welcome to the Hub

Sorry for the delay, I get the battlefield fever every night and forgot I actually have an ongoing LP to update.

01.jpg

We set forth from Junktown towards the Hub, in the hunt for the Water Chip. Hopefully, someone can point me in the right direction from there.

02.jpg

ty.jpg
Here we are, gentlemen. Welcome to the Hub.
vd.jpg
Wow. This is big.
03.jpg

A bustle of activity greeted us as we arrive in the Hub. Carts, filled with goods, its escorts armed and ready to move. This looks promising. This well-travelled lot should have some clues on the Water Chip. I hope.

ty.jpg
So what are we looking for here? You looking to do some caravan runs?
vd.jpg
No, I'm looking for something specific. High-tech stuff. A Water Chip.
ty.jpg
Never heard of those. But there's plenty of water here in the Hub for sale. Just ask the Water Merchants.

That sounds like a reasonable thing to do. Suppose my search for the Water Chip end up with failure in the Hub, I can buy some time from the Water Merchants by delivering some water to them. But the Overseer wouldn't like me revealing our Vault's location to outsiders. It's a fall back plan, no need to do that for now.

04.jpg

vd.jpg
What is this place?
mat.gif
This is the Hub. It is a trade center for the wastes. It's the biggest city I know of, you can find just about any thing you could want here. And if you're looking for work this is the place to be. It seems like just about everyone here is looking to hire you for something, be it legal or not.
vd.jpg
What are these carts doing here?
mat.gif
These are the caravans. We cart goods to just about all corners of the wastes. Junktown, the Brotherhood, Shady Sands and numerous other places. Necropolis and the Glow are the only places we steer clear of. I'm heading this group and we will be leaving shortly. See you around.
vd.jpg
The Brotherhood? Necropolis? The Glow?
ty.jpg
Eh, now that he mentioned it, I think the Brotherhood might just have what you're looking for. I heard they're pretty much high-tech. But they can be a difficult bunch to deal with.
ian.jpg
About the Glow, I've heard some terrible stories about it, man. Maybe it's best if you don't ever visit that place. I've heard a friend just drop dead after visiting that place for hours.
ty.jpg
It's radiation. Most likely. The reason for the Glow. It's so deadly that most salvagers never make it to the surface with their loot. Could be where you can find the Water Chip.
vd.jpg
Sounds like a lead. I might need to pack some anti-radiation supplies before heading out there.
ty.jpg
Wise choice. Let's head to the merchants then and maybe someone can tell you where it is.
05.jpg

vd.jpg
Uh, what services do you offer, exactly?
dan.gif
Why, I manage the care for the pretty much all of the Caravan's wagons and Brahmin in these parts. If they ever need anything for their caravans, I'm the one they talk to. Hell, the Big Three deal with me exclusively.
vd.jpg
Who are the Big Three?
dan.gif
Damn, son. Have ya' been locked up all yer life in a cave or somethin'?
ian.jpg
*Chuckles* Yeah, that's partly true.
dan.gif
The Big Three are the three largest merchant groups in the world.
vd.jpg
The world?
dan.gif
Well, okay, maybe not the world, but they sure as hell cover a large portion; 'bout as far as yer eye can see.
vd.jpg
Oh, thanks for the information. Bye.
06.jpg

Stepping out of Dan's house, I can see several miles of crops being grown. It is possible to survive in the wasteland after all. If only the Overseer can see that. We may have supplies in the Vault to rebuild, but by the time we leave, would there even be enough resources for the Vault Dwellers to establish themselves?

ty.jpg
Brian, you may want to speak with the local authorities first before heading in. Get familiarized, they're bigger than Killian Backwaters militia. Don't step on their toes.
vd.jpg
Sounds like a good move.
07.jpg

vd.jpg
What is this place?
dep.gif
Oh, a newcomer! Welcome to the Hub! You've reached the biggest city on the coast. Heck, maybe the biggest city in the world for all we know. I thought you were part of the caravan, did you come in with them?
vd.jpg
No. We came from Junktown.
dep.gif
That's surprising. It's been pretty rough out there, especially with the missing caravans. But you're safe now, just stay away from the Maltese Falcon. They're a bunch of trouble makers, Decker and his crew.
vd.jpg
Sounds like another Gizmo.
ty.jpg
He's not like that fat tub of lard, Brian. He's a snake. Careful.
vd.jpg
Who's Decker?
dep.gif
He owns the Maltese Falcon in the merchant market, but I wouldn't associate with him if you want to stay out of trouble. He's nothing but a murdering animal, but the Sheriff won't let me arrest him without proof.
vd.jpg
This sounds like a job for...
ian.jpg
Oh man, not again.
vd.jpg
Oh, did you say something about a missing caravan?
dep.gif
It's a tragedy really. Some caravans have turned up missing. Butch over at the Far Go Traders is offering a reward for information or something.
vd.jpg
Do you know where I could find a Water Chip? Ones that are used in a Vault?
dep.gif
Well, I've never heard of one. If it has to do with water, though, you should talk to the Water Merchants, south, past the Downtown area.
vd.jpg
I'll do that, thanks.
dep.gif
No problem. Believe it or not, our city is quite safe and our police are all very highly trained peace keepers. You shouldn't have any problems, just avoid the Maltese Falcon.

I spend some time trading with Deputy Try for stims. He's offering a good price for them and I can't pass it up.
08.jpg

Deputy Fry isn't just talking big about the highly-trained peace keepers part. Some of them are dressed in full combat armor, not the kind that you craft from scraps out in the wastes. These look like a full-on military police gear, complete with helmet and green camo.
09.jpg

10.jpg

vd.jpg
Not really into those at the moment, Ian. Maybe next time when we're short on cash.

We stop over a general store and marvelled at the selection of drugs and good available. Not just stims, mind you.
12.jpg

vd.jpg
These are really Psychos?
shop.gif
Yeah, one needle shot in your veins, and you're going to hulk out the competition. Fast moves, and bullets that bounce off your flesh like rubber.
ty.jpg
That's for the first ten minutes only.
vd.jpg
I think I'm aware of the risk of addiction. The Overseer bans drug usage, but allows it in times of emergency. And the wasteland is a dangerous place. Might pay off if I pick up some.
shop.gif
Wise choice, kid. Will that be all?
vd.jpg
I'd take some anti-radiation supplies and that repair manual you got there.
shop.gif
Caps or trade?
vd.jpg
I've got plenty of both. Let's do this.
13.jpg

14.jpg

ian.jpg
Best to just walk on, Brian...
vd.jpg
Don't worry, Ian. There's four of us and a guard just by the street. One wrong move and he's dead.
civ.gif
So whathca doing in the Hub?
vd.jpg
Looking for something I need.
civ.gif
Well, we all got needs. I might be ableto help with some of 'em. What sort of needs do you got?
vd.jpg
Some information on Water Chip would be nice.
civ.gif
So, you think I might know a little more about those Water Chip things, huh? Well, you might be right. It's gonna' cost you, though. I think 500 bottle cops oughta' do it.
ty.jpg
Let's just walk away. This guy's full of it.
vd.jpg
How about 400?
civ.gif
Now, now. I wouldn't be the man I am if I gave information away for less than it's worth. Come back when you've got the caps.
vd.jpg
I do have them now. Spill it.

He takes the money.

civ.gif
Well, so here's what I know about the Water Chips. The thing I've heard is that they all used to come from the Vaults. So if I was lookin' for one, I'd find out where the rest of these Vaults were. I'm not sure where all the Vaults are exactly, but I've heard that there are about 4 around here somewhere.
ian.jpg
No shit. You want to know where brahmit shit comes from? I've heard there's plenty of those makers around.
vd.jpg
Wait, Ian. He's got a point. If what he says is true..there's gotta be two more Vaults. Somewhere. And I just got to find out where they are. Let's visit the Maltese Falcon.
16.jpg

ty.jpg
The hell are we doing here? I thought the deputy made it clear that it's nothing but trouble?
vd.jpg
Chill out, Tycho. We're here to solve problems.
17.jpg

vd.jpg
What's the job and what's it pay?
guard.gif
It's not skag work. You'll need to do it quick and clean. The boss will give you the details, but it's more money than you'll make in a month working for the caravans, but only if you're good enough. We don't take kindly to failures.
vd.jpg
Sounds good.
guard.gif
I'm sure you're familiar with our sort of business, so let me just say it would be in your best interest to keep this to yourself. Shall we?
ty.jpg
Into the snake's pit...

The guard leads us downstairs to Decker's office.

18a.jpg

Decker speaks in a direct manner. His words oozes of venom.

vd.jpg
I'm Brian.
decker.jpg
Well, the pleasantries are now concluded. Do you wish to hear about the job?
vd.jpg
That's why I'm here.
decker.jpg
Background: There's a certain merchant who's...how to phrase this...not cooperating fully with the Underground.
vd.jpg
And the job?
decker.jpg
Quite simple. Hunt down the merchant and his wife and exterminate them.
vd.jpg
How much for the job?
decker.jpg
It's standard pay. 500 caps to start, another 2500 when the job is done. Will you do it?
vd.jpg
Yeah, I'll do it.
decker.jpg
Very nice. The merchant lives in the Heights, on Barter Street and Thunder Avenue. Your initial pay will be handed to you on your way out.

We are escorted upstairs back to the Maltese Falcon lobby.

18.jpg

guard.gif
If anyone does happen to see you, make sure they don't live to tell anyone about it. Once you've finished your little errand come back here. One more thing. Don't even think about going to the police, that's the worst mistake you could ever make. If you can, try not to attract their attention when doing your work, they can be quite a pain sometimes.

He hands over the money.

ty.jpg
So you're serious about this, aren't you? You're going to kill an innocent man, AND his wife. Just for caps?
vd.jpg
No. We've got the caps. It's proof enough for the deputy to bring down Decker and his cronies.
ty.jpg
Fooled me for a second there...
ian.jpg
Get used to it, Tycho. Brian's here got a silver tongue.

Unfortunately, it was late when we arrive at Deputy Fry's office. He's headed to his bed already.
19.jpg

vd.jpg
Either we wait till morning, or...
ty.jpg
He's a deputy to the Sheriff. Try his boss. I feel kinda antsy already. If Decker's men sees us here...
vd.jpg
Alright. Let's do it.

We head to the Downtown Police station.
20.jpg

21.jpg

vd.jpg
I have a crime to report.
green.gif
Well, spit it out!
vd.jpg
Decker tried to hire me to kill some merchant and his wife.
green.gif
You're kidding! Well...uh...did..did he ask you personally?
vd.jpg
Yes, he did.
green.gif
Excellent! I had already heard from other sources about his plan. You're the final confirmation I needed to take action against him. This is going to be rough, and I can use any help I can get. I can pay you 1300 caps. 300 now, and the rest when we're all done. What do you say?
vd.jpg
It'll be a pleasure.
green.gif
Great! Here's the caps. We can leave as soon as you're ready.
vd.jpg
Ready boys?
ian.jpg
SMG's ready.
ty.jpg
Yeah, let's take down that snake.
green.gif
Okay, let's go...

Decker's guard on topside gave a dark look as our group approach, but let us go to his office anyway. Decker eyes narrowed when he spot us.
22.jpg

decker.jpg
How good to see you Sheriff Greene! I see you've come to say your goodbyes.

Decker signals to his guards as his hand moved behind his back. Show's about to start.

That's not even a hard fight. At least there, you receive assistance. And it ends quickly, because...well, you'll see.

What was really a hard fight was the Brotherhood kidnappers fight in the East side of Hub. No matter what level you are, it is really tricky to survive against four people with combat shotgun, SMG, spiked knuckles and a .223 pistol.

It's not? They're coming from all sides and with NPCs with SMGs, there's going to be a lot of friendly fire. I remember often having a hard time keeping Dogmeat alive through the fight, and he was too useful to lose at this point.

But yeah, the kidnapper fight is tougher. Usually use the technique of bottling them up inside the building.

Hell, if you used the full-screen mod the UI would be way sized dpown when you resize back to 640, so it's better to not use it for LPs like these.

Great job RK47.

I know nothing of BF3 except watching WTF is on its singleplayer and laughing at how terrible and boring it was. I suppose no one plays it for the SP though.

Guys, I gotta say, it's been nice to spoilered. Great. I could use the help y'know.

*Takes a deep breath*

I don't need. Spoilers. It's supposed to be a refreshing walkthrough for me. If you want to play the game for me, go ahead do it yourself. Start another LP. I don't care. But don't start telling me what to expect next in this thread. I don't mind vague hints, but outright telling me a group of guys will rape me in alley or 'hey, kill this guy, it's gonna make the game easier' isn't very helpful at all. This meta-game knowledge you speak of might be enjoyable or helpful to others but it isn't to ME. There's a reason why Torment is a great RPG when experienced for the first time, and Fallout is no different.

Example: I would not have taken Tycho along if NOBODY mentioned him. Because I do not remember him at all. I am not very angry about this, but it makes a difference. If someone told me to avoid talking to the Doc in the basement, I wouldn't have encountered the eye problem. It all adds up.

Thanks. Sorry for sounding angry but I'm really confused on some people's motivation.

Hah. To be honest I'm always annoyed by people commenting to LPs with semi-smugs "wait until you see..." spoilerific stuff.

It's odd for me to think of anyone not knowing Fallout by heart though. :P It's what makes this LP refreshing though. This is a game that allows you to fuck around and fuck up quite a lot, so it's interesting to see where it goes.

Duly noted! I haven't been spoilering though have I? Only been responding to direct questions mostly. I hope.

I do believe you're wrong, you have to kill both Deckard and Kane, and I never took that route as an out, usually wait to kill Deckard last

Sorry man.

It's just that Fallout - a 15 year old game - and one that is discussed so often around here...I almost feel like everyone played it.

And I feel, "What will I say that nobody didn't already know?" But yeah, I get your point.

I bet it's actually RK47's 1st playthrough.

I mean - I've played Fallout ~3 times max and I remember most of it...

But yeah - people who spoil in LPs are faggots.
The problem is - most of the time they're the only / most active posters...

12 - Hit the Deck

I could see that Decker is pulling something from his back, but what is it? A hand gun? His gaze fixed on me, from his hand flew something at high speed, catching me off guard.

01.jpg

The fuck? He's throwing knives? The leather armor protected me from any damage, but that means everyone's going to have their guns aimed at me. Decker's four bodyguards look menacing. There's two bitches with SMG, a guy with a sledgehammer, and Kane, brandishing spiked knuckles.

03.jpg

Can't take any chances. I chew the Mentat tablets, grab the Psycho needle and jam it into my arm, feeling the rush of concentration that followed. A bullet grazed my right leg, but I barely felt the pain.

Ian picks the closest target and open fire.
04.jpg

In a flash, Kane is right on Ian's face and start laying the hurt.
05.jpg

06.jpg

Ian couldn't catch a break. A bullet caught him on his weak spot and he was out for the count. Alive, but barely conscious.
07.jpg

Deputy Fry unload his high caliber pistol at the nearest SMG bitch.
08.jpg

Kane ignores the motionless Ian and moves on to Tycho.
09.jpg

ty.jpg
Motherfucker's punches hit like bullets!
10.jpg

I understood the risk. If we don't take Kane down right away, we're all going down. Decker's a non factor. His throwing knives are non-effective. I take a deep breath and felt time slowed down as I raise the shotgun on Kane's menacing form.
11.jpg

I pulled the trigger.
12.jpg

ty.jpg
Nice shot, Brian! He's out of it!
vd.jpg
No problem, man! Don't let up, we're not finished yet!
ian.jpg
Damn right, we aren't.

Ian gets up!
13.jpg

14.jpg

I'm starting to attract more attention. The bullets are starting to sting.
15.jpg

I jam a stimpack to heal my wounds.
16.jpg

Before Kane gets up, I better take away those spiked fists from him.
17.jpg

18.jpg

Fucker's full of drugs. No wonder he hits like a truck.

Dogmeat decides to tear Decker a new one. With a mighty pounce, Dogmeats knocks the crime lord onto the floor.
19.jpg

Ian's bullets successfully scared one of Decker's bodyguard into fleeing.
20.jpg

Deputy Fry finishes another guard with a shot to the chest.
21.jpg

The dude with a sledgehammer starts swinging at me, I tried to knock him out with another cheap shot, to no avail.
22.jpg

Looks like Dogmeat has Decker under control.
23.jpg

Another hammer blow connected, this time I really felt it and was knocked to the ground. I had a slight double vision before standing up again.
24.jpg

If the groin won't do...I guess the legs will have to go.
25.jpg

Success.
26.jpg

Tycho settles Kane's last moments with a shotgun blast to the unconscious thug's head.
27.jpg

At the same time, Decker was hit with another hard pounce by Dogmeat and was knocked back against the wall. This time, he didn't stand up. A pool of blood forming on his head. His bodyguards looked unsure.

At last, they drop their weapons and surrendered quietly.
28.jpg

Our work's done. Decker's underground is finished.
29.jpg

green.gif
No one here is smart enough to take up the reins.
vd.jpg
I sure hope so.
green.gif
Well, here's the rest of the reward. Thanks again for your help. The city owes you a debt of gratitude.

I pocket the thousand caps and smiled. Ian came close to biting it today, but we all made it through the fight alive.
