He's lived in Germany for too long. What has that got to do with whether a village needs priests to be found?
There was no central committee planning that shit out in advance, giving out licenses, certifications and the like.

What if its not a race, but just something very smart people learn at wizard school? A mystery cult, rather than a bloodline.A "race" born with the superior genes of magic is a fascist's wet dream, yes.
As long as it's not framed as the master race born privileged to become members of the wizard school. But my main gripe with wizards was never whether they are fascy or not, it has always been the inevitable magocratic tyranny that will ensue. And the plot insulation power of magic. And the impossibility of balancing martials vs mages in the gameplay sense. What if its not a race, but just something very smart people learn at wizard school? A mystery cult, rather than a bloodline.
As if wizzos wouldn't spend most of their time fighting each other rather than the rest of the worldbeen the inevitable magocratic tyranny that will ensue.
That might just limit how much political power a single wizard has, but it will still be a magocracy because no other group would be strong enough to be their equal. In my setting, the ecclesiarchy consists of members of all major factions in the hegemonic symmachy, not just the three churches (even though they can exert quite a lot of influence due to various reasons). As if wizzos wouldn't spend most of their time fighting each other rather than the rest of the worldbeen the inevitable magocratic tyranny that will ensue.
Beg to differ dude, no one ever heard of a unified coaltion of insufferable know-it-alls.That might just limit how much political power a single wizard has, but it will still be a magocracy because no other group would be strong enough to be their equal
