Silent Hill's gameplay wasn't Good Gameplay™ but intentional and designed as a part of a larger experience.
Wrong. This is a lie that autistic fans have been telling themselves for years.

"It was expertly bad for maximum terror!"

No. Silent Hill was unintentionally jank because it was made by a bunch of indie Japs who had great ideas, but lacked the talent needed to design quality gameplay. One could argue that it was passable for the genre at the time, and that's being generous, but it's always been considered bad for a reason.

SH is clearly far below the non-jap late 90s classics such as Half-Life (linear, also gives lots of resources like SH, hated by half of this forum), Planescape (it's just reading), Thief (default keybinds unusable by normies), Baldur's Gate (bioware), your mother (aged poorly), just because omg tank controls omg the game isnt raping my ass hard difficult. etc etc.

Condemned is such a trash comparison please stop this. You are retarded.

I compare Condemned because it manages to have fun combat while maintaining a horror atmosphere. No janky fixed camera and retarded swinging animations necessary. Konami has a problem with trying to appease a tiny minority of retards at the expense of quality design. We have people unironically claiming that the gif I posted a while back was the peak of the genre lol. The reason these companies keep shitting out remakes is because fanshits just want the same thing, forever. If Silent Hill 5 was released today, they'd just be claiming that it isn't as good as Silent Hill 2. Apparently nothing will ever be as good as that one fucking game.

I wonder if the stuttering is once again an Unreal shader issue.
Yes but the video posted earlier is something else, it looks like someone running out of vram because they have the settings too high for their PC to handle.

I mentioned it in my impressions. I don't think it is shader stutter. It looks more like streaming assets issue where game requires fast SSD probably NVME.
UE5 uses NINITE which in principle doesn't use LODs. So when you walk around UE requests original assets from which LODs re made on the fly.
Shader stutter usually happens when new objects are loaded and GPU has to calculate them for the first time.

Maybe art house is a more accurate description for Team Silent, but my point stands. They were given small budgets to make niche horror games out of broom closet. Like I said, they had great ideas for horror, bad gameplay designers.

"Bad combat"? Yet somehow SH managed to be scarier than RE.
It wasn't scary because of the bad combat. It was scary because of the thick atmosphere and overall sense of dread as things got progressively more fucked up.

Original Silent Hill 2 artist Masahiro Ito didn't want to remake the survival horror masterpiece, but decided to cooperate to "make sure the core was preserved"

Silent Hill 2 Remake is just months from release, but original art designer Masahiro Ito says he almost rejected the chance to work on it entirely.
"Back in late 2019 or 2020, he says that [Konami series producer] Motoi Okamoto reached out to him via Twitter, as it was called back then, and asked whether he would be willing to cooperate in a Silent Hill 2 Remake," Ito-san's translator said at the Tokyo Silent Hill 2 Remake preview event on August 8. "At the time, he had felt that there was no need to do such a thing. So his original plan was to reject the idea."

However, he soon had a change of heart. "Even if he were to reject the idea, he said he felt that there was always the chance that Konami would be open to creating a remake even without his support.
"Rather than let the project go without him, he felt it was best for him to cooperate and to do his best to make sure that the core of what made Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 2, was preserved in the best way possible. There was the initial idea of preserving the core but giving it a new coat of paint," he says of his reasons to work on the project despite not feeling a remake was all too necessary.
Ito-san then addressed the different content, stylistic, and design changes that had been tabled for the remake and how it differs from what the game turned out to be. "The original idea that Konami and Bloober Team had in mind may have been a little different from what we ended up with right now. But [Masahiro Ito] believes that by cooperating [in the remake], he was able to inject the core principle of what Silent Hill 2 is and preserve it in a way that is brushed up and polished, so that players of the current generation will be able to appreciate what was crucial to Silent Hill 2."
Silent Hill 2 Remake launches on October 8 on PC and PS5.

Strap Yourselves In Codex Year of the Donut Codex+ Now Streaming! Torment: Tides of Numenera Wasteland 2 Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
"Obtained" it, played for a while and I think I will uninstall.

Let me say this, if I had never played any Silent Hill before then I imagine I'd really like this. It's pretty cool. It's like Resident Evil 4 Remake but with better story.

That said, the story is butchered compared to original, dialogs are handicapped and "badass" now (James is a complete chad, you know, unless when he squeals) and now it's all about running around killing things and solving occasional puzzle. The focus of the game went from uneasy atmosphere creating dread (which is all gone) to AWESOME combat with cool animations and finishing moves. But don't worry, James is also now able to break windows (but only developer chosen ones) into stores 'n shiet to steal stuff, and crawl around into places (but can't jump over 0.5m fence).

There's also no yellow paint, but there's WHITE CLOTHES! Now you can see where you need to go by just following their trail!

What else can I say from my short play, graphics are amazing if you have never played the original perhaps, because Bloomfuck team couldn't even be bothered to remake half of the animations (but there is a lot of cool combat ones!). They also butchered all character looks. I honestly think this might be the first time that a remake has even worse graphics than the original. I don't know what to add. It's worse than I expected, and I didn't expect much.

I'm assuming ultra widescreen looks nice on an ultra widescreen monitor, but on a widescreen it's weird. So much empty space around the subject.

I'm watching a playthrough, this game has more combat than RE2 remake. I saw an achievement pop-up that the player killed 75 enemy with a ranged weapon (at about the halfway point in the game), I don't even remember killing that many in the original in total. There is very little opportunity to build any tension because almost every single room and hallway has multiple nurses to fight.

I wonder if it was Konami that pushed for over the shoulder camera and increased combat encounters.

Why are characters (other than maybe James) so weirdly proportioned in this game? It's really bizarre in an uncanny valley sort of way. I know that games are mostly made by folks who are heavily out of touch with reality now. But not knowing how human beings look like seems like a bit too much?

I know they can't make women anymore but even Eddie's face is a lot fatter than his body is represented. The original is much better proportioned, he's a young fat kid not a middle aged obese dude.

It's the standard perspective used in most games nowadays, so it appeals to the mass market of consoomers who are afraid to try anything different.
Blobberteam already used different approaches in their recent games. Also consider the influence of P.T. "Mass market" changed many times since the advent of over the shoulder camera.
